A box joint—also called a finger joint—is made by cutting matching square fingers and sockets into two pieces of wood so their ends interlock. For clean results, use a dedicated, accurately indexed jig: a router table and a table saw are both established options. The essential steps are to set up the jig and cutter for your stock, index every cut consistently, register the second board to the first, and test the fit before gluing.
Choose the method that suits your equipment
Both a router-table jig and a table-saw jig can produce box joints. Choose based on the machine and cutter you can use safely, the stock dimensions supported by the jig, and how its indexing system sets the spacing and fit. Follow the jig and machine manuals; compatibility is not universal.
| Method or example | What it uses | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shop-made router-table jig | A flat base, square fence, guide running in the table’s miter slot, and a fitted indexing peg. The Woodworkers Institute example is designed for 12 mm fingers and can be adapted for other sizes and tables. | Base and fence accuracy, peg fit, cutter height, secure workholding, guarding and dust extraction. |
| Leigh RTJ400 template system | For Leigh’s illustrated 3/8-inch joint, the guide specifies the template position for pins, the supplied e10 guide bushing and a 3/8-inch straight bit. | Use the exact model instructions. The guide-bushing adjustment and settings described for this system are not universal dimensions. |
| INCRA I-Box jig | The manufacturer lists compatible table saws or router tables using a stacking-type dado blade, dedicated box-joint blade set or straight router bits. | For this jig, the manufacturer lists pin widths from 1/8 to 3/4 inch and lumber thicknesses from 1/4 to 7/8 inch. Confirm compatibility with your machine; these limits do not mean every saw accepts a dado stack. |

Make a box joint with an indexed router-table jig
Build and align the jig
A shop-made jig can be built around a flat MDF base, a square fence, a guide that runs in the router table’s miter slot, and an accurately fitted indexing peg. In the Woodworkers Institute example, the finger width is 12 mm; other sizes require adapting the jig to the intended cutter, spacing and table.

- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
Make the base flat and the fence square to the cutter slot. Small alignment errors in the fence can accumulate across the joint, leaving fingers that do not line up. Fit the peg carefully to the slot so it indexes reliably. Set the cutter height to the combined thickness of the jig base and workpiece, as specified in that guide.
Cut and index the first board
- Secure the jig and workpiece as directed by the jig and router-table instructions. Keep hands clear of the cutter and use the guard and dust extraction.
- Hold or clamp the first board against the fence and indexing peg, then make the first cut.
- Move the board so the newly cut slot fits over the peg. Make the next cut, and repeat the same indexing motion along the edge.
Register and cut the mating board
To align the second board, place the last notch cut in the first board over the peg and butt the second board against it. Make the first cut in the second board, then continue indexing each new slot against the peg. This registration step establishes the complementary pattern; a misregistered starting position can leave the finished fingers offset.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Check the fit
Bring the boards together dry before applying glue. The fingers should align and seat without forcing. If the fit is wrong, check the peg registration, fence alignment and cutter setup, then make a test cut and adjust the jig before cutting the final pieces.
Using a dedicated Leigh router-table template
For the Leigh RTJ400 example, the instructions pair the illustrated 3/8-inch joint with a 3/8-inch straight bit, the supplied e10 guide bushing and the specified template position. Route all the template openings for the first board, flip that board end over end, change the template position for the socket board, and route its openings. Test the fit; the Leigh guide describes adjusting tightness with the elliptical guide bushing. Follow the manual for the exact jig rather than transferring these settings to another template system.

Using a table-saw box-joint jig
A table saw needs a suitable box-joint jig and cutter configuration. INCRA says its I-Box works on compatible table saws or router tables with a stacking-type dado blade, dedicated box-joint blade set or straight router bits. Its stated range—1/8-to-3/4-inch pin widths and 1/4-to-7/8-inch lumber thickness—applies to that jig. Verify the machine, cutter and workpiece limits in the current product and machine manuals before setup; not every table saw accepts a dado stack.
During comparison, look for a repeatable indexing method, adjustment for fit, secure clamping and guarding. INCRA lists front and rear blade guards, a clampable fence and a reusable MDF sub-fence intended to reduce tearout for the I-Box. These product features do not replace safe setup or the maker’s operating instructions.

Safety and dust control
- Keep hands well clear of the exposed cutter and secure the workpiece; use the guard and clamping features provided by the jig.
- Use suitable extraction or vacuum collection. When cutting MDF for a shop-made jig, the Woodworkers Institute guide recommends respiratory protection as well as dust extraction.
- Follow the current safety and operating instructions for the machine, cutter and jig. A jig’s guard or fence is not a substitute for those instructions.
What a box joint can—and cannot—do
The interlocking fingers provide substantial glue surfaces, and glue is needed to resist force. The University of Melbourne guide cautions that a box joint does not resist pushing and pulling as well as a dovetail. The available sources do not establish a universal strength comparison or numerical strength figure, so choose the joint for the design and loading rather than assuming it is always equivalent to a dovetail.
