What does deadly nightshade look like?
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes Atropa belladonna, in the Solanaceae family, as a bushy perennial. Its leaves are large, pointed and oval, with prominent veins. Flowers hang singly in bell shapes and are usually brownish-purple, though they can also be greenish or yellowish. The fruit is shiny black and up to 1 cm across. The RHS says the plant is generally found in dryish disturbed ground, field margins, waste ground, woods and scrub. See the RHS plant profile.
These features can help you decide whether to seek an expert identification, but they cannot establish a plant’s identity from a text description alone. “Nightshade” is also used for other plants, including bittersweet nightshade; do not assume they are the same species. If ingestion may have occurred, seek poison advice promptly rather than delaying to identify or collect a specimen. A photo or identification details can help experts if you can obtain them safely.
Are deadly nightshade berries poisonous?
Yes. The RHS classifies Atropa belladonna as toxic if eaten and advises avoiding eye contact. It also warns that dogs and cats can be poisoned if they eat the plant. Brisbane City Council states that all parts contain toxic alkaloids and are poisonous. No safe amount for a person or pet is established by these sources, so do not taste the plant or treat any quantity as harmless. What should I do if someone ate a nightshade berry?
Get poison-control advice immediately; do not wait for symptoms. In the United States, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or use webPOISONCONTROL. The online tool uses details such as the substance, amount, route, age or weight where relevant, symptoms and time since exposure. Poison specialists need to assess the particular exposure. Do not delay the call to gather a plant sample; share a photo or safely obtained identification details if available. The cited guidance does not establish a first-aid protocol for every exposure route, so get individualized instructions rather than improvising treatment. How can you remove deadly nightshade from a garden?
RHS guidance recommends gloves and other protective equipment when handling the plant and cautions against eye contact. Brisbane City Council names foliar spray and complete removal as control methods, but does not provide a universal procedure applicable to every garden or jurisdiction. - Keep children and pets away from the plant while you arrange identification or removal.
- Use gloves and protective clothing; neither source specifies a glove material or rating, and gloves should not be treated as a guarantee against exposure.
- Avoid touching your face or eyes while handling it. Wash your hands and equipment afterward as a prudent precaution.
- Ask local horticultural or waste authorities how to remove and dispose of the plant. The cited sources do not establish a universal disposal method, so do not assume it should be composted or burned.
