The Monmouth tiny house in Maine pairs a raised reading and work nook with guest sleeping space: Homecrux says the built-in area can be converted when visitors stay. How the convertible book nook works
Homecrux describes the nook as a lengthy, elevated built-in reached by stairs. It serves as a place to relax, read, or work, with under-bench storage and an adjustable work surface. When needed, the nook converts into a sleeping space for guests.
The feature is useful because it gives one area several roles without dedicating a separate room to occasional visitors. Homecrux does not specify the sleeping surface’s dimensions, the exact conversion steps, or how much clearance is needed. Those details matter when assessing whether it will suit a particular guest or room layout.
Inside the Monmouth tiny house
According to Homecrux’s October 1, 2026 feature, the Monmouth is a tiny house on wheels in Maine, reported completed in 2024. It measures 18 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and 13.5 feet high, with 150 square feet of living area. Its main spaces are a living area, kitchen, bathroom, loft bedroom, and the flexible nook.

Living area and kitchen
The living area has a single seating area facing the entrance and a custom pegboard storage system. The kitchen includes a refrigerator, cooktop, storage, and a countertop with a fold-down extension. Homecrux characterizes the kitchen as adequate for regular meals for a small family, while noting that people who cook extensively may find it limited.
Bathroom and loft
The bathroom includes a shower, toilet, washer-dryer combination, vanity sink, shelves, and storage. A fold-down table provides a laundry work surface; the room also has an electric water heater and exhaust fan. Storage-integrated stairs rise from the kitchen to a loft described as fitting a double bed and side tables. Homecrux also notes a window and a skylight with a built-in bug screen.

What to check when evaluating a convertible nook
The Monmouth feature shows the idea in one particular home, not a tested comparison of alternative furniture. If you are considering a similar solution for a compact room, assess the practical details before choosing a design:
- Sleeping surface: Confirm the usable length and width in sleeping mode and whether they suit the intended guest.
- Conversion and clearance: Find out what moves, how long setup takes, and whether doors, stairs, or walkways remain accessible.
- Storage: Check whether under-seat storage stays accessible when the nook is converted.
- Work surface: Determine whether the adjustable surface can remain in place or must be cleared or repositioned.
- Room fit: Measure the nook, access route, and surrounding space rather than assuming a design from another home will fit.
A folding wall-mounted table can be another way to add a compact work surface in a small space, but it is a general alternative—not a product identified as part of the Monmouth.
