A pit, chip, or hole is different: cleaning may reveal the damage, but it cannot restore missing enamel or metal. Identify the sink surface first, because a method that is suitable for one finish can scratch or damage another.
First, identify the sink material and the damage
Check the sink maker’s care instructions before choosing a cleaner or pad. Stainless steel and porcelain enamel over steel or cast iron have different care needs. Enamel is a glass-like coating over metal; it can chip, leaving the base exposed.
Rinse away loose dirt and inspect the mark in good light. A brown surface deposit may be removable. A mark that starts at a chip, worn patch, or visible depression may indicate coating loss or corrosion rather than a stain. Cleaning can help distinguish the two, but it will not replace missing material.
How to clean a superficial rust stain
- Use a compatible cleaner. Follow the sink manufacturer’s care guidance. New Mexico State University Extension names vinegar as an option for sink rust stains, but compatibility is not universal. If you try it, first test an inconspicuous area and do not leave it sitting for an extended or arbitrary time.
- Apply it gently. Use a soft cloth or a non-scratch tool approved for your surface. Avoid steel wool and harsh abrasives unless the sink maker explicitly approves them; abrasives can scratch or dull a finish.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse the area thoroughly and dry it with a clean cloth. Stop if the finish changes, the mark proves to be a pit, or you see a chip or exposed base.
Michigan State University Extension cautions that acids and coarse cleansers can affect enamel glaze and advises against strong acids and harsh chemicals for rust removal. For porcelain or enamel, prefer the manufacturer-approved cleaner and take particular care not to let a commercial rust remover spill onto the finish; University of Georgia Extension warns that such products can ruin porcelain or enamel.

What to do about an enamel chip
If rust appears where enamel is chipped or worn, the coating has been damaged. Removing the brown discoloration does not repair that loss. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development describes corrosion-resistant touch-up paints and epoxies for enameled steel, but notes that color matching can be difficult and a patch may not wear as well as the original finish. Confirm the sink’s base and coating before selecting a repair product, and follow its instructions.
For enameled cast iron, HUD describes professional refinishing and notes that it can cost more than replacement. The right choice depends on the sink’s condition and the extent of the damage.

Why cleaning cannot fix a pit or hole
A pit is a depression where material has been lost, not just discoloration on an intact surface. Rust removal can expose the full extent of corrosion; a U.S. government consumer corrosion booklet notes that holes in heavily rusted iron or steel may become more visible once rust is removed. That is general guidance about corroded metal, not a sink-specific repair method.
Deep pits, spreading corrosion, a leak, or a damaged basin need an assessment for repair, refinishing, or replacement appropriate to the sink material. Do not keep scrubbing a damaged area in the hope that cleaning will fill it.

Always test surface you're working on with the Tru-Metal Test Strip included in every kit before proceeding AND ALWAYS work in the grain direction as straight as possible
Prevent cleaner-related damage
- Do not mix bleach with a rust remover. New Mexico State University Extension warns that the combination produces poisonous gas.
- Follow the cleaner label, use suitable ventilation and protection, and rinse completely.
- Keep a rust remover off surfaces it may damage, especially porcelain or enamel, and avoid strong acids or aggressive abrasives as all-purpose sink treatments.
- Keep stainless steel clean and use only cleaners and pads approved by its maker. HUD notes that scratches in stainless steel cannot be repaired and that cleanliness helps preserve its corrosion resistance.
If the rust keeps coming back
Repeated staining may have an ongoing source rather than a cleaning problem. University of Georgia Extension identifies iron in water or rusting pipes as possible contributors to rust staining on nearby tile. That does not diagnose a particular sink, but recurring marks are a reason to investigate the water or plumbing instead of escalating to harsher spot treatments.
