Store DEWALT lithium-ion tool batteries in a cool, dry place, away from direct sun, moisture and temperature extremes. For storage longer than six months, DEWALT advises fully charging the pack first; its instruction manual also says to store a fully charged pack out of the charger. Follow the current manual for your specific battery and charger.
Store batteries safely between jobs
- Remove the pack from the tool for extended storage. DEWALT’s battery safety guidance recommends disengaging the battery from the tool before storing it for an extended period.
- Choose a cool, dry indoor location. DEWALT’s battery safety page says to store and charge batteries in a cool, dry location. Keep packs away from direct sunlight, liquid, excess heat and cold.
- Keep them out of hot sheds and metal buildings. A DEWALT DCH072B instruction manual warns against storing or using the tool and battery where temperatures may reach or exceed 104°F (40°C), including sheds or metal buildings in summer. That is an upper-limit warning, not an ideal storage temperature.
- For storage beyond six months, fully charge the pack first. DEWALT gives this guidance on its battery safety page. The DCH072B manual says to store a fully charged pack out of the charger. Check the current manual for the exact pack and charger rather than applying a generic charge percentage.
The cited DEWALT guidance does not specify a universal ideal storage-temperature band, intermediate-storage charge percentage or recurring recharge interval for all lithium-ion packs.
Clean the exterior without letting moisture in
Wipe dirt from the battery casing with a clean, slightly damp cloth, as DEWALT’s safety guidance recommends; do not use solvents. The DCH072B manual allows a cloth or soft non-metallic brush for dirt and grease and cautions against water or cleaning solutions. Keep all liquid out of the pack and follow the cleaning directions in your model’s manual.
Charge with compatible equipment and watch for damage
- Use authentic DEWALT batteries and a compatible DEWALT charger. Check the battery and charger manuals for charging conditions and temperature limits; never force a pack into an incompatible charger.
- Do not use a visibly cracked or otherwise damaged pack. Do not open, repair or service the battery yourself.
- If a pack no longer holds a charge or appears damaged, contact a DEWALT Service Center for advice and safe disposal.
These precautions follow DEWALT’s battery safety guidance and the DCH072B manual.

Protect battery terminals during transport
Prevent exposed terminals from touching loose metal objects such as nails, screws, keys, coins or tools. DEWALT specifically instructs users to engage the red transport cap when shipping FLEXVOLT batteries. Follow the handling and shipping instructions for your battery model.
Should you store DEWALT batteries fully charged or discharged?
For extended storage longer than six months, DEWALT’s battery safety page advises fully charging the pack first, and its DCH072B manual says to keep a fully charged pack out of the charger. A separate DEWALT support FAQ says to “regularly charge and discharge all the above batteries to keep them in good order,” but its wording does not establish that it applies to current lithium-ion tool packs. It does not provide a universal cycling schedule, so do not treat it as one or let it override your pack’s current manual.

When you need a replacement battery
Consider a replacement if a pack has failed, is damaged, or you need an additional battery for the work. Match the battery platform and model to your tool’s manual before buying; compatibility is tool-specific. For example, DEWALT identifies the DCBP520 as a 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK 5Ah battery, but that does not establish compatibility with every DEWALT tool. Compare compatible options by platform first, then capacity (Ah) and size or weight for the job.
