Rapid7 disclosed nine vulnerabilities in OSRAM LIGHTIFY Home and Pro on July 26, 2016. The findings affected the systems’ apps, gateways, web console, and ZigBee communications—not every LIGHTIFY bulb as a standalone product. The security status of any particular unit today depends on its model, firmware, app, and network setup; the 2016 disclosure does not establish whether current updates or support are available.

What the 2016 findings covered

LIGHTIFY Home was the residential system, with a gateway that connected lighting devices to local control and an iOS app. LIGHTIFY Pro was a professional system with a web-management console and a commissioning app. Rapid7 reported nine issues across the two variants. Its initial vendor contact was May 16, 2016, and its public disclosure followed on July 26, 2016.

The findings were not all the same kind of risk. Some exposed credentials stored on a phone; others affected gateway command handling, browser-based administration, or the ZigBee network used to communicate with lighting devices.

Home and Pro vulnerabilities at a glance

System Finding What it could mean Status reported by Rapid7 in July 2016
Home CVE-2016-5051: the iOS app stored the Wi-Fi WPA2 pre-shared key in cleartext Someone with access to the affected app data could potentially obtain the Wi-Fi password. Fixed
Home CVE-2016-5052: no SSL certificate pinning in the app A successful man-in-the-middle attacker could inspect or manipulate app traffic. Unfixed
Home CVE-2016-5053: unauthenticated command execution on the gateway The local-control service accepted commands without authentication, including commands that could change lighting or reconfigure the device. Fixed
Home CVE-2016-5054: ZigBee network command replay Previously observed lighting commands could be replayed, potentially disrupting operation. Unfixed
Pro CVE-2016-5055: persistent cross-site scripting (XSS) in the web-management console Injected content could run in the browser of an authenticated administrator viewing affected fields or logs. Fixed
Pro CVE-2016-5056: weak default WPA2 pre-shared keys Rapid7 said the default keys could be cracked in hours; that estimate is the researchers’ 2016 report, not a measurement of every installation. Fixed
Pro CVE-2016-5057: no SSL certificate pinning in the app A successful man-in-the-middle attacker could inspect or manipulate app traffic. Unfixed
Pro CVE-2016-5058: ZigBee network command replay Previously observed lighting commands could be replayed, potentially disrupting operation. Unfixed
Pro CVE-2016-5059: cached screenshots in the commissioning app Stored screenshots could reveal a gateway password to someone able to access them. Fixed

“Fixed” and “unfixed” above describe Rapid7’s status at the July 26, 2016 disclosure, not a verified status for a device in 2026. The disclosure does not identify the firmware or app currently installed on an individual system.

What the Home gateway command flaw meant

Rapid7 reported that the Home gateway’s local-control service listened on TCP port 4000 and did not require authentication for commands. An attacker able to reach that service on the network could issue commands to control lighting or reconfigure the gateway. NIST’s CVE-2016-5053 record likewise describes a network-accessible issue requiring no privileges or user interaction.

This was a serious local-network exposure, but the finding alone does not show that every gateway was reachable from the public internet, or that the flaw was exploited in the wild. Network placement matters: a gateway reachable only from a trusted, segmented local network presents a different exposure from one reachable by untrusted devices or through an unsafe remote-access setup.

What the Pro web-console flaw meant

The Pro web-management console used ports 80/TCP and 443/TCP. Its persistent XSS flaw allowed injected JavaScript or HTML to be stored and then run in the browser context of an authenticated user who viewed affected fields or logs. Depending on that user’s access and the injected payload, this could expose or alter data, change configuration, or target the administrator’s workstation. It was not the same as an unauthenticated command sent directly to the Home gateway.

How the app and ZigBee weaknesses differed

Locally exposed app information

On Home, the iOS app stored the Wi-Fi WPA2 key in cleartext. On Pro, cached commissioning-app screenshots could show a gateway password. These findings concern secrets available from app data or cached images; they do not by themselves establish that an attacker could retrieve those secrets remotely.

Traffic interception

Both Home and Pro apps lacked SSL certificate pinning. Pinning helps an app reject an unexpected certificate even when a connection otherwise appears encrypted. Without it, an attacker who can successfully position themselves for a man-in-the-middle attack may be able to inspect or alter app traffic. This is a conditional attack, not evidence that ordinary network traffic was automatically exposed.

ZigBee command replay

Rapid7 found that neither variant rekeyed ZigBee commands. A replay weakness can let an attacker resend captured commands and disrupt lighting control. NIST describes CVE-2016-5054 as a ZigBee replay weakness in Home. OSRAM told SecurityWeek that the highlighted ZigBee protocol vulnerabilities were “unfortunately not in OSRAM’s area of influence.” That statement explains the vendor’s position; it does not establish that the risks were resolved by another party.

Are LIGHTIFY bulbs vulnerable, and should you replace them?

The disclosed issues do not establish that every bulb has a separate exploitable flaw. Several findings concern the gateway or apps, while the ZigBee replay findings concern commands sent within the lighting network and could affect lighting operation. A bulb connected to an affected installation may be part of the system exposed to those risks, but the disclosure is not proof that every bulb or installation is affected in the same way.

There is no universal replacement answer based on these 2016 findings alone. First identify whether the installation is Home or Pro, the gateway model and firmware, and the app version in use. Then check with the current system owner or platform documentation whether applicable updates and support remain available. If the gateway cannot be confirmed as supported or patched, or must remain reachable by untrusted devices, replacing or retiring that gateway is a reasonable risk-reduction choice. It does not follow that every bulb must also be replaced; confirm compatibility before changing components.

Practical steps for an older installation

  1. Identify the system. Determine whether the installation uses LIGHTIFY Home or Pro and record the gateway, app, and firmware versions.
  2. Check patch status. Ask the current owner or consult platform documentation for update and support information for that exact equipment. The 2016 “fixed” labels are not proof that a particular unit received the fix.
  3. Reduce network exposure. Keep an old gateway off untrusted networks and avoid exposing its management or local-control services to the internet. Restrict which local devices can reach it where your network equipment permits.
  4. Review credentials and cached data. Do not retain default Pro Wi-Fi keys; use a strong, unique network password. Protect phones and commissioning devices that may contain app data or cached screenshots.
  5. Decide based on support and exposure. If you cannot verify ongoing support or adequate isolation, plan a replacement or retirement of the gateway. Check that replacement components work with the existing installation rather than assuming all LIGHTIFY Home and Pro equipment is interchangeable.

Sources and scope

The vulnerability names, affected components, impacts, and July 2016 status in this article are based on Rapid7’s 2016 disclosure. NIST’s CVE record corroborates the network and privilege characteristics of CVE-2016-5053 and identifies the Home ZigBee replay issue in CVE-2016-5054. SecurityWeek reported OSRAM’s statement about the ZigBee protocol. These disclosures establish the reported vulnerabilities at that time; they do not establish current firmware availability, present-day cloud operation, exploitation prevalence, or the status of an individual installation.
