A hydrogen peroxide spot-treatment is one published way to tackle yellow mattress stains, but it is not a guaranteed fix—and yellowing does not prove sweat is the cause. Before trying it, check the mattress maker’s care instructions, test the mixture on a hidden spot, and keep the mattress only lightly damp. The $3 cost and bright-white result in the original account are that author’s experience, not a verified price or outcome for every mattress.
Why a mattress may have yellow stains
Sweat accumulation and oxidation of body oils can contribute to yellowing, but stains may also come from bedwetting or spilled drinks. Color alone cannot identify the cause. The treatment that makes sense depends on what caused the stain and what the mattress fabric can tolerate.
Sleep Foundation discusses sweat and body oils as common contributors to yellow mattress stains in its step-by-step stain guide; Sealy Australia also lists bedwetting and drink spills among possible causes in its mattress-care advice.
Check the mattress instructions before using a cleaner
Read the care label and the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific mattress. A cover that appears removable may not be designed to come off, so do not unzip or remove it unless the maker says that is safe. Test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first: hydrogen peroxide may damage some fabrics or bleach them if left on too long.

One published peroxide method for yellow stains
Sleep Foundation describes the following as an example for treating a stain, not a universal or manufacturer-approved recipe. Use it only if it is compatible with your mattress care instructions.

- Prepare the surface. Remove bedding and vacuum the mattress. Do not remove a cover unless the manufacturer permits it.
- Patch-test first. Apply a small amount of the solution to an inconspicuous area and check for damage or discoloration before treating the visible stain.
- Apply baking soda. Cover the stain with baking soda, leave it for at least 15 minutes, then vacuum it up.
- Mix the solution. Combine 8 fluid ounces of cool water, 8 fluid ounces of hydrogen peroxide, and two or three drops of clear dish soap.
- Lightly spray the stain. Apply enough to dampen the surface, not soak it. Do not pour water or cleaner directly onto the mattress.
- Use a second layer of baking soda. Leave it for at least a few hours, or overnight if possible, then brush and vacuum it away. Wipe the area as directed by the guide.
- Let the mattress dry completely. Keep bedding off until the treated area is fully dry.
Sleep Foundation gives the mixture and sequence in its yellow-stain guide. Sealy advises minimizing moisture, avoiding pouring water directly onto the mattress, and allowing it to dry fully. Excess moisture can be difficult to remove from a mattress.
Do not combine recipes with different dwell times
Leesa publishes a separate mixture: 8 ounces of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and one drop of dish soap. Its instructions say to let that mixture sit for five to ten minutes and warn against leaving it on too long because peroxide can bleach. These directions are not interchangeable with Sleep Foundation’s water-based recipe and longer baking-soda step. Follow one compatible set of instructions rather than combining parts of both.

Peroxide treatment or enzyme cleaner?
The best choice depends on stain type and mattress compatibility. Sleep Foundation says a commercial enzyme cleaner is typically the best option for biological stains such as sweat, urine, and blood. Its general mattress-cleaning guide also describes dish-soap suds and a 1:1 cold-water and hydrogen-peroxide option for some stains. The available guidance does not establish that one method always works better than the other.

- Consider a peroxide method only when the mattress instructions allow it and a hidden-area test shows no damage.
- Consider an enzyme cleaner for biological stains, while checking that the product is suitable for the mattress fabric and following its label.
- For either approach, use as little moisture as practical and follow the product’s own application and dwell-time directions.

A published recipe can provide a starting point, but the result depends on the stain and mattress materials. The account behind the $3 claim describes one author’s experience; the cited guides do not verify that price, identify that mattress, or establish that the treatment restored it to bright white. A stain that remains after a compatible, careful treatment may need a different approach; avoid repeated peroxide applications if the fabric shows damage or fading.

Keep future stains from setting
A washable mattress protector can help shield the mattress from spills and body moisture. Sealy recommends prevention through a protector and advises following the care instructions for cleaning and drying.
