Start in the basement or lowest level and look near the point where the sewer pipe leaves the house. Then check outside along the foundation, especially near exterior walls behind kitchens and bathrooms. A cleanout is often a capped pipe with a raised square plug, but its exact location and appearance vary—and some homes have no accessible cleanout.
Where to look inside first
Find the building sewer’s likely exit point in the basement or lowest level. Inspect the nearby foundation wall and floor for a capped pipe. The City of Minneapolis describes basement placement as common, and the City of Calgary also recommends checking the lowest level. These are useful starting points, not guarantees.
In Calgary’s guidance, the area near the water service entry or main shutoff is another clue: water and sanitary services may enter near one another. That relationship is not universal, so use it to guide your search rather than assume the cleanout is there. See Calgary’s sewage-backup guidance and the City of Minneapolis cleanout information.
How to search outside
- Walk the foundation. Look near exterior walls behind kitchens and bathrooms, where plumbing routes may lead toward the yard or street. San José recommends using these fixture locations to narrow the search.
- Follow the likely sewer route. Check the front, side, and back yard along the line from the house toward the street. A back yard or alley may be more likely where the property layout points that way.
- Look for surface clues. A small cover marked “sewer,” a curb marking such as an “S,” or a slight linear depression may help identify the route. Landscaping can conceal a cap or cover. These clues are local and not present at every property.
San José’s clean-out guidance describes exterior-wall alignment, curb and cover markings, and ground depressions. Mesa also notes that landscaping and alleys can affect where an outdoor cap is found; its page concerns pool or spa drainage, so its pool-discharge instructions do not apply to ordinary cleanout locating: City of Mesa guidance.

What a cleanout may look like
A common form is a capped pipe with a raised square on the cap, sometimes covered by a small concrete or metal cover. The City of Minneapolis describes a typical four-inch capped pipe with a steel or plastic cover; Mesa describes a commonly encountered threaded cap about three to four inches wide. Those are examples, not universal dimensions or specifications.
Do not mistake every capped pipe or cover for a sewer cleanout. If you are uncertain what an access point serves, leave it alone and ask a licensed plumber or local wastewater authority.

Follow a practical search sequence
- In the basement or lowest level, identify where the building sewer appears to leave the home; inspect nearby wall and floor areas.
- Check near the water service entry and main shutoff as an additional clue, not a rule.
- Walk the exterior perimeter, giving extra attention to walls behind kitchens and bathrooms.
- Trace the likely route toward the street through the front, side, and back yard. Look for a capped pipe, square raised plug, marked cover, curb marking, or ground depression, including beneath or beside landscaping.
- If you cannot find a visible, accessible cleanout, contact the local wastewater authority for local markings or records, or ask a licensed plumber to locate and assess it.
Why a cleanout may be hard to find—or absent
A cleanout may be buried under dirt, concrete, carpet, or landscaping. It may be indoors or outdoors, on private or public property, or there may be no cleanout at the property. The City of Minneapolis notes that a missing cleanout may be absent or concealed; Toronto likewise describes variation in location and presence. Municipal guidance differs, so a location or code arrangement described by one city should not be treated as a rule for every home.
If you need to know who is responsible for a particular access point, or whether local records or markings can help, ask your wastewater authority. For code requirements or installation responsibility, consult the applicable local plumbing authority rather than relying on another municipality’s rules.

When to call for help
If the suspected cleanout is buried, damaged, blocked from access, or still missing after a careful search, do not excavate blindly or force a cap. A licensed plumber can help locate the cleanout and determine its condition; installation may be needed before some sewer investigations. The City of Carlsbad describes plumber assistance with locating and assessing a cleanout, and Toronto notes that proper access may need to be installed before some investigations.
If you are searching because sewage is backing up, minimize water use that could worsen the backup and contact your wastewater authority or a licensed plumber for instructions specific to your situation. Toronto’s blocked or backed-up basement drain guidance discusses the role of an accessible cleanout in investigating blockages.
