Usually, yes. A dehumidifier’s exhaust can feel warm while it removes moisture, because it cools humid air to condense water and then releases the drier air after it passes over warm components. A dehumidifier controls humidity; it is not an air conditioner, so it should not be expected to cool a room.
Why a dehumidifier blows warm air
Compressor models cool, condense, then reheat
In a refrigerant dehumidifier, a fan draws humid room air across a cold evaporator coil. Moisture condenses on the coil and drains into a tank or through a drain hose. The drier air then passes over warm coils before returning to the room. Carrier explains this cool-condense-reheat cycle in its dehumidifier operating guide. The compressor and fan also produce heat, and the unit transfers heat into its exhaust stream.
Manufacturers describe warm exhaust as normal during active dehumidification. De’Longhi says a working unit releases air slightly warmer than room temperature and is not an air conditioner. GE Appliances likewise says warm or hot exhaust is normal when the appliance is drawing moisture from the air. The exact feel varies by model and operating mode; there is no single outlet-temperature cutoff that applies to every dehumidifier.
Desiccant models work differently
A desiccant dehumidifier absorbs moisture with a moisture-collecting material rather than using the same refrigerant-coil process. Honeywell says these units typically produce warmer, drier exhaust. Check your model’s manual before comparing its outlet air with another type of dehumidifier.

Can it make a room warmer?
Yes. A dehumidifier returns heat to the room as it operates, so a portable unit can make the space feel warmer, particularly during long or continuous operation. Frigidaire notes that continuous-run mode keeps the compressor running and can make the unit feel warmer; that mode is intended for short periods of high humidity before returning to a selected humidity target. GE also notes that the exhaust may feel cooler when the compressor is off during defrost or fan mode.
What to check if the heat seems unusual
Warm exhaust by itself does not show that the unit is faulty. Check the unit’s settings, airflow and moisture-removal performance before seeking service.

- Clearance: Keep the air intake and outlet unobstructed and provide the clearance specified in the owner’s manual. Blocked airflow can interfere with operation.
- Filter: Inspect and clean the filter as the manual directs. Cleaning intervals vary by model; Honeywell’s guidance for its covered portable product line says about every two weeks, but your model’s instructions take priority.
- Mode and humidity target: Check whether continuous operation is selected. If it is not needed, set the desired humidity level according to the manual.
- Room temperature and frost: Check the model’s operating-temperature range. If frost appears, make sure airflow is clear and the filter is clean; the room may be below the unit’s operating range. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for defrosting and allow ice to melt as directed.
- Moisture removal: Check whether humidity is decreasing and whether water is collecting in the tank or draining as expected for the chosen mode and room conditions. A nearby hygrometer can help you compare humidity readings with the unit’s built-in humidistat; Honeywell notes that the readings may differ.
When to contact the manufacturer
Use the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model if the unit continues to run unusually hot after basic checks, removes little moisture, develops persistent icing, displays an error code or shows other abnormal behavior. Frigidaire advises unplugging the unit and contacting support if it continues to run hot. A warm outlet alone is not enough to diagnose a refrigerant leak, compressor problem or any other internal failure.
