To make a foam tombstone, sketch and cut a shape from rigid foam board or reclaimed packaging foam, add lettering and weathered details, paint it with a finish verified as foam-safe, then attach a support suited to its size and the ground where it will stand. The materials and tools vary by foam type: a recipe for dense insulation board may not work the same way on softer packaging foam.
Choose foam and a build approach
DIY guides use both 2-inch rigid foam board and reclaimed packaging foam. Rigid board offers a more uniform sheet for cutting a planned silhouette; packaging foam is a way to reuse material, but its surface and firmness can vary. HGTV notes that its project can use rigid or softer foam, while recommending different paint precautions for different foam types.

Cut, shape and letter the tombstone
- Plan the silhouette. Draw the outline and lettering on paper or directly on the foam. Keep the base broad enough for the support you intend to attach.
- Cut the outline. Use a hand tool appropriate to the foam or a powered tool described in its manual. Make controlled cuts rather than forcing the material. For a powered tool, clamp the piece when practical and wear eye and respiratory protection.
- Shape the surface. Smooth cut edges or distress them to suggest chipped stone. The guides use sanding, spackling compound, or carved details; choose methods that suit the foam’s firmness.
- Add lettering and decoration. Carve an epitaph into firm foam, or attach letters and appliqués as in HGTV’s project. A printed lettering guide is another documented approach in Hallmark Channel’s older project, which also uses a foam cutter, Dremel, spray adhesive and heat gun. Heat and powered tools are optional, not necessary for a basic marker; follow their instructions and ventilation guidance if using them.
Dremel recommends vacuuming loose foam bits before painting. Its guide also advises reading tool manuals, wearing eye and respiratory protection, and clamping the workpiece whenever practical. Paint without damaging the foam
Do not assume ordinary spray paint or spray-on clear coat is safe for foam. HGTV warns that spray paint can melt rigid foam and that spray-on protective finish may melt or dissolve it. Dremel cautions that some spray paints can eat away at foam when applied heavily and recommends allowing time between coats.
- Check the product label for compatibility with the exact foam you are using.
- Brush-on acrylic or chalk paint is documented in the project guides and avoids relying on an unverified spray formulation.
- If using a compatible spray product, follow its label and apply cautiously rather than laying on a heavy coat.

Choose a support for the display site
Match the support to the marker’s size and the ground; the cited examples are project-specific, not tested load ratings.
- Small stakes or dowels: Dremel uses wooden skewers and Lowe’s lists short wooden dowels for foam pieces.
- More substantial ground support: HGTV attaches pool-noodle sections to the back of its marker so rebar driven into the ground can support it.
Before installing the marker, make sure the support is secure in the actual soil and the foam does not wobble. The guides do not provide a universal stake length or wind-resistance rating, so do not treat one project’s dimensions as a guarantee for another yard.

How long does it take?
Make: reported about 40 hours for the tombstone project described in its 2007 article, “Craft some styrofoam into realistic tombstones for Halloween.” That is one maker’s project duration, not a typical time estimate; the other cited guides do not establish a standard build time.
