A dehumidifier’s warm discharge air is normal: the appliance removes moisture but sends heat from its compressor, fan, and dehumidification process back into the room. To limit unnecessary warming, use humidity control instead of continuous run when appropriate, keep airflow clear, shut the treated room’s doors and windows, and reduce moisture entering the building. The machine will still add some heat while it operates.
Why a dehumidifier warms the room
A typical portable dehumidifier draws room air over a refrigerated surface, where moisture condenses and collects as water. The appliance then returns air to the space. The refrigeration process, compressor, and fan all contribute heat to that outgoing air. The U.S. Department of Energy describes the appliance’s main components and operation in its Consumer Dehumidifiers guide.
ENERGY STAR says not to be alarmed if the air directly around the unit is warmer than the surrounding area. That local warmth is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. A DOE Building America presentation from 2012 gives a typical supply-air range of 105–115°F, but that historical figure describes air leaving the unit—not how many degrees the whole room will warm. No universal room-temperature increase is established; it varies with the model, runtime, room size, ventilation, and heat exchange with the rest of the building.
Frigidaire likewise explains that warm air is typical while its dehumidifiers operate, and notes that its continuous-run mode can make the appliance feel warmer because the compressor keeps running. That operating guidance is specific to Frigidaire; check the instructions for your own make and model.

How to reduce avoidable warming
Use a humidity setpoint instead of continuous run
If your unit is set to run continuously, switch to its humidity-control mode when the room no longer needs constant drying. ENERGY STAR gives 30%–50% relative humidity (RH) as a general optimum range for a building; during the heating season in colder climates, it cites 30%–40% to help avoid window condensation. These are general ranges, not a universal setting for every climate, season, or building. Follow your appliance manual and consider the conditions in the room.
Frigidaire recommends continuous operation for short periods—one or two days—during high humidity, followed by setting a desired humidity level. Apply that interval only to the Frigidaire guidance cited here; other models may have different controls and instructions.

Check the actual RH
A built-in humidistat or readable RH display lets you see whether the space has reached its target. If your unit lacks one, or its reading is unclear, use a separate digital hygrometer to monitor the room. ENERGY STAR recommends placing a separately purchased hygrometer near the dehumidifier for this purpose. A hygrometer measures humidity; it does not cool the air.
Keep the airflow path clear
Follow the manufacturer’s clearance requirements. ENERGY STAR says many units with top-mounted discharge can sit against walls; units without top-mounted discharge should be kept away from walls and furniture so air can circulate freely. Close the treated room’s doors and windows while the dehumidifier runs. This helps it work on the intended space rather than continually processing humid air from elsewhere, but it does not eliminate the heat produced during dehumidification.

Reduce moisture sources
Less moisture entering or being produced indoors can reduce how long the appliance needs to run. ENERGY STAR recommends:
- Venting clothes dryers outdoors.
- Using kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans when moisture is produced.
- Repairing leaks.
- Improving drainage around the foundation to keep water away from the building.
The temperature benefit in an individual home has not been quantified; these measures reduce moisture load rather than directly cooling the room.

When replacing equipment or considering whole-home dehumidification
If you are replacing a portable unit, compare its performance for your space and moisture conditions—not just its advertised capacity. ENERGY STAR’s product guidance identifies these useful factors:
- Efficiency: Look for ENERGY STAR certification and compare integrated energy factor, measured in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. A higher integrated energy factor means more water removal per unit of electricity.
- Capacity: Choose a daily water-removal capacity appropriate to both the space and its moisture conditions; floor area alone does not tell the whole story.
- Operating temperature: If the room often falls below 65°F, check for low-temperature capability and the manufacturer’s frost-protection limits. Frost on coils can impair performance.
- Controls: A humidistat and legible RH display can help avoid unnecessary continuous operation.
ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional models; its product specification became effective October 1, 2025. The DOE consumer page separately says ENERGY STAR-qualified models use about 15% less energy than a conventional unit. Because the two pages state different figures without explaining the discrepancy, treat each as its publisher’s claim rather than combining them into one number.

A whole-home dehumidifier may suit some humid-climate homes with central air, especially relatively well-sealed homes with consistently high humidity throughout the house. ENERGY STAR advises proper sizing and consultation with a contractor; it also notes these systems can be expensive. DOE’s hot-humid-climate research describes supplemental dehumidification as a possible solution while noting its cost, operating expense, and maintenance burden. It is a system-level option, not a simple way to make a portable unit’s outlet air cooler.
Safety and signs that need attention
Warm exhaust alone is described as normal by ENERGY STAR and manufacturers. If the appliance stays unusually hot, shows an error, or behaves differently from its manual, follow that model’s troubleshooting and service instructions. Frigidaire advises unplugging its own unit and seeking support if it continues to run hot after its suggested reset; do not apply that brand-specific procedure to another model without checking its manual.
Use a properly grounded outlet, keep drainage away from electrical cords, circuits, and devices, and follow the appliance’s safety warnings. Do not compromise electrical safety to reposition a unit or manage its water.
