Plant watermelon seeds outdoors only after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to about 65°F or higher; give them full sun, well-drained soil and room for sprawling vines. Sow about 1 inch deep, thin seedlings to suit your local spacing guidance, keep the soil consistently moist, and judge ripeness using several signs rather than a calendar alone.

When can I plant watermelon seeds outside?

Wait until frost danger has passed and the soil is warm. Watermelon is a warm-season crop, and seed planted in cold soil may rot or develop disease. Illinois Extension says to wait until soil is above 65°F; Iowa State Extension gives a 60–70°F range; and University of Georgia Extension recommends 65–70°F. These recommendations differ, so check your local extension guidance and, if practical, use a soil thermometer to measure near seed depth.

As Illinois Extension cautions, “Sowing watermelon seed too early in cold soils can lead to seed rot and other plant diseases.” Read its guidance on timing and sowing.

How do I choose a site and watermelon variety?

Choose a spot with full sun and well-drained soil. Georgia Extension recommends eight to ten hours of sunlight daily and a soil pH of 6.0–7.0; treat that pH range as its regional guidance, not a guarantee for every garden. A soil test is a better basis for deciding whether to add fertilizer or other amendments.

Pick a variety suited to the length of your local warm season and the room available for its vines. Utah State University Extension lists Crimson Sweet and Mirage Hybrid among larger types, Mickylee and Minilee among smaller icebox types, and Yellow Baby as a yellow-fleshed option. Check seed-packet descriptions for expected maturity and vine habit rather than assuming these examples perform identically in every climate. See Utah State’s watermelon variety and growing guidance.

If you want seedless watermelon, plan for pollination as well as the seedless variety. Illinois Extension explains that seedless plants do not provide fertile pollen needed to set fruit, so plant a pollinator variety with a distinct rind pattern; that difference helps you identify the pollinator’s fruit at harvest. Learn about seedless watermelon pollination.

How deep do you plant watermelon seeds?

Sow seeds about 1 inch deep. Extension recommendations differ on how many seeds to place in a hill, how far apart hills should be, and how many seedlings to keep. For example, Illinois Extension recommends two to three seeds per hill, hills 6 feet apart and rows 7–10 feet apart, then thinning to one strong plant. Iowa State recommends four or five seeds per hill, hills 2–3 feet apart in rows 6–8 feet apart, then thinning to two or three seedlings. Georgia Extension recommends four or five seeds per hill, hills 8 feet apart on all sides, and thinning to two plants about a week after germination.

These are different regional layouts, not one spacing formula to combine. Follow local extension or seed-packet directions for your variety, and allow enough space for its vines to spread.

Iowa State’s home-garden instructions and Georgia Extension’s watermelon guide provide examples of regional sowing layouts.

Can I start watermelon seeds indoors?

Yes. Indoor starting can help in a short season, but it is optional: direct sow after frost danger has passed and the soil is warm enough. Iowa State Extension recommends starting seeds indoors three to four weeks before the expected outdoor planting date. Use plantable seed-starting pots to reduce root disturbance, then transplant when seedlings have one or two true leaves. Harden them outdoors for a few days before planting.

How do I care for watermelon plants?

Water and soil

Keep moisture reasonably consistent, especially as plants grow and fruit develops, but do not use a fixed schedule that ignores rainfall, soil type, heat or growth stage. Utah State recommends deep, infrequent irrigation. Good drainage matters: waterlogged soil is not a substitute for steady moisture.

Where possible, base fertilizer decisions on a soil test. Georgia Extension advises incorporating amendments into the upper 6–8 inches of soil. Mulch can suppress weeds and conserve water; Utah State advises waiting until the soil has warmed before applying organic mulch. Georgia Extension’s growing guide and Utah State’s guide cover soil preparation and mulch.

Vine room

Keep the intended vine spread in mind when laying out the bed. Watermelon vines need substantial ground space, and the hill and row distances in extension guides vary by region and recommendation. Do not crowd plants simply to fit more hills into the garden; follow the spacing for your variety and local conditions.

How do I know when a watermelon is ripe?

Check more than one sign. Utah State University Extension recommends looking for a dry tendril nearest the fruit, a yellow ground spot where the melon rests on the soil, and dull-colored skin. No single cue is a foolproof test, so use several together and check the variety’s expected maturity information.

Utah State reports that fruit takes 35–45 days to mature from flowering, depending on temperature and variety. Treat that as a guide from its extension publication, not a guaranteed harvest date for every garden. See Utah State’s harvest signs and maturity guidance.
