BoXZY combines FDM 3D printing, CNC milling and diode-laser engraving on one desktop platform. Its CNC router is the most substantial tool on paper; its 3D printer and 2 W laser are more limited. For a construction shop or maker space that values bench space and can tolerate hands-on setup, that mix may be useful. It is not a substitute for dedicated production equipment, and current price, parts availability, warranty and support need to be confirmed before buying.
What BoXZY does
BoXZY is a desktop fabrication machine with interchangeable heads: a 3D-printing extruder, a CNC router and a diode laser. The manufacturer describes it as “The All-For-One Machine” and lists an aluminum body, industrial ball screws and a rapid-swap carriage. The combination is intended to let one machine handle additive, subtractive and engraving jobs, rather than do any one of those jobs at industrial scale.
That makes it potentially relevant to construction work at the model, mock-up and small-component end of the spectrum: for example, printing a small design study, milling a panel or template, or engraving a mark on a suitable workpiece. Those are possible uses, not a guarantee of suitability for a particular material, tolerance or job. The published information does not establish production accuracy, throughput or performance on construction-site materials.

The mill and laser work-area figures are from the Kickstarter FAQ, so treat them as campaign-era specifications, not verified current production limits. The FAQ says the mill can reach up to a 7 × 7 × 7-inch area depending on bit diameter and length, and that a laser workpiece can be up to 7 inches tall.

How useful is the 3D printer?
The documented setup uses common 1.75 mm filament and a 0.4 mm nozzle, rather than a proprietary material format. PLA is the least complicated documented material to start with. Make also lists ABS and PVA support, but the bed is not heated; that makes reliable adhesion and control of warping more challenging for ABS and other materials that benefit from a warm build surface.
A community guide documents three-point leveling, seating the magnetic platform, homing the axes and choosing BoXZY profiles for Slic3r or Cura. This is a manual workflow, not a plug-and-play promise: a mismatched profile or a poorly seated or leveled platform can undermine a print before the machine reaches the end of the job.

What can the CNC head handle?
The router’s 1¼-horsepower rating and 10,000–30,000 RPM range make the CNC head the most compelling part of the published specification set for users who need more than light engraving. The review’s caution is practical: the included 1/4-inch milling bit is a poor fit for intricate or small projects. Plan on acquiring suitable additional 1/4-inch router bits, and a collet adapter if the job calls for a different shank size.
Workholding also matters. The workflow uses supplied clamps to secure stock, but Make warns that clamps can catch as the Z-axis rises. Check clearance through the planned toolpath and vertical movement; a clamp in the wrong place can interfere with the machine rather than hold the work safely.

Is the 2 W laser strong enough to cut?
The documented laser is a 2 W diode unit intended for engraving. Make describes it as relatively weak and suitable for etching wood, leather, acrylic and similar materials. Nothing in the published information supports treating it as a general-purpose cutter, so do not buy BoXZY on the assumption that its laser will cut construction stock.
Laser jobs also require a deliberate shutoff command in the G-code. Make warns that without an off command, the laser may continue burning after the intended engraving. Verify the job file and shutoff behavior before running a job; this is a safety-critical part of the workflow, not just a finish-quality detail.

Setup, safety and day-to-day operation
BoXZY’s versatility comes with manual changeovers and checks. The operator swaps the head, homes the axes, levels or seats the platform as needed, chooses the appropriate software profile, and secures CNC stock. It is better understood as three tool workflows sharing a frame than as one machine that switches jobs without intervention.
- Change the head and prepare the work. Install the head needed for the job; secure CNC stock with the supplied clamps and check that they will clear the toolpath and Z-axis travel.
- Home and check the platform. Home the axes. For printing, follow the community guide’s three-point leveling procedure and confirm the magnetic platform is seated correctly.
- Select the matching software profile. The guide documents BoXZY profiles for Slic3r and Cura. Confirm the profile matches the installed tool and intended process before sending a job.
- Use the emergency stop before reaching inside. The community guide specifically advises using the physical emergency stop before putting hands inside the machine.
- Check laser shutoff before engraving. Ensure the G-code includes an off command so the laser does not continue burning beyond the intended job.
What the 2017 price does—and does not—tell you
Make’s March 30, 2017 review gives a tested price of $3,599. That is a historical figure, not a current quote or evidence of present availability. The material available from the manufacturer and Kickstarter is also historical or stale; it does not establish today’s retail price, parts inventory, warranty terms or support. Confirm those directly with the seller before treating the machine as a viable purchase.

Who should consider BoXZY?
It may fit a space-conscious workshop
One aluminum and ball-screw platform with rapid head changes can appeal where bench space is tight and occasional access to three different processes matters more than maximizing any single process. Open support for common 1.75 mm filament also avoids dependence on a proprietary filament system.
It is a poor fit for turnkey or production-critical work
The non-heated print bed, low-power engraving laser, sparse included CNC tooling and manual setup all impose real limits. A shop that needs dependable production capacity, easy ABS printing, laser cutting or finely detailed milling should compare dedicated machines against BoXZY rather than assume the hybrid saves time or money.
Verdict: Is BoXZY worth it as a 3-in-1?
BoXZY’s strongest case is consolidation: a compact platform offers a serious router specification alongside basic desktop 3D printing and light laser engraving. Its weakest case is expecting three specialist machines in one. The published specifications support occasional, small-scale work by an operator willing to configure, tool and supervise each process—not a low-effort path to professional output. Whether it is worth buying depends on confirmed current support and total cost after bits, adapters and other consumables, weighed against how often all three heads would actually be used.
