A running dehumidifier can send out air that feels warm, and the area immediately around the unit may become slightly warmer. ENERGY STAR says not to be alarmed if the air directly around a dehumidifier is warmer than the surrounding area. Warmth alone does not show that the appliance is faulty—but there is no universal outlet-temperature range to use as a diagnostic test.
Why a dehumidifier can make air feel warm
A dehumidifier draws room air across a refrigerated surface, where moisture condenses. A fan then circulates the air back into the space; the collected water drains into a container or through a drain connection. ENERGY STAR describes these core components in its dehumidifier efficiency criteria.
The refrigeration system uses electricity while moving heat as it removes moisture, so the discharge can feel warmer than the air entering the unit. That explains why the outlet and nearby area may feel warm, but it is not a measured temperature specification. ENERGY STAR describes nearby warming as slight; it does not set a normal outlet-air temperature or a maximum safe temperature.
When warmth is—and isn’t—a concern
Warm-feeling air by itself is not evidence of a defect. Because ENERGY STAR provides no diagnostic temperature threshold, compare the unit’s operation with its manual rather than relying on touch alone. If the unit is performing poorly, consider the room conditions and airflow before assuming the warmth is the cause.

Check the operating temperature
Cool rooms can affect moisture removal. ENERGY STAR says frost can form on condensing coils when air temperature drops below 65°F, potentially reducing performance. Some models have an anti-frost sensor that switches the unit off below a threshold. Check the model’s stated operating range and defrost guidance, especially in a basement or other space that gets cold.
Check airflow and cleanliness
Keep the intake and discharge paths clear and follow the manual for clearances, filter or coil care, and operating limits. ENERGY STAR advises keeping models without top-mounted discharge away from walls and furniture so air can circulate, and avoiding dusty or dirty locations where coils and grills can clog. Close doors and windows to the space being dehumidified while the unit runs for more efficient operation.

Portable and whole-home units deliver air differently
Portable dehumidifiers work in the room or area where they are placed, without additional ducting. Whole-home models are ducted: ducts return air to the unit and distribute dehumidified air to one or more locations. ENERGY STAR describes both types, but their installation and air delivery differ, so the location where you feel warm air will depend on the design.
Drainage also varies. Some models accept a hose connected to a fitting at the bucket; check the manual to confirm compatibility before fitting a hose or accessory. For a space that regularly falls below 65°F, look for a model specified to operate at lower temperatures.
