Work evenly, then check that the pencil marks have disappeared across the face. The right tool and exact wetting and movement instructions depend on the stone and flattening tool, so check both manufacturers’ guidance first.
Why flatten a sharpening stone?
Repeated sharpening can wear a stone unevenly, leaving its working face concave or otherwise distorted. A blade supported on an uneven face may not sharpen consistently. SHAPTON describes surface distortion as a cause of uneven sharpening, while KAI Europe recommends flattening to maintain accurate sharpening.
Choose a compatible flattening method
There is no universal plate or abrasive that suits every sharpening stone. Identify your stone’s material and grit, then check the flattening tool maker’s compatibility and care instructions before starting.
| Method | What the cited guidance supports | Check before use |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated lapping plate, including a diamond plate | DMT and SHAPTON document plate-based methods for flattening stones. | Confirm compatibility with your stone type and grit, and follow the plate’s water and cleanup instructions. A diamond plate is not automatically suitable just because it is a diamond plate. |
| Flattening or truing stone | Lee Valley identifies a rubbing or truing stone as a method for waterstones. | Check that the truing stone is appropriate for the sharpening stone you intend to lap. |
| Wet/dry abrasive paper on a flat reference surface | Lee Valley’s sharpening instructions describe using 100–220 grit wet/dry paper on a flat reference surface. | The backing surface must be genuinely flat and rigid. The paper is consumable, and the setup must suit your stone. |
SHAPTON’s product guidance illustrates why compatibility matters: it describes its DGLP as intended for fine stones in the 30-micron class or below, identified on that page as 500 grit or above, and says its cited plates are not recommended for diamond-electrodeposited sharpening stones. Those are SHAPTON-specific limits, not rules for all flattening plates. See SHAPTON’s DGLP guidance and FAQ.
#1 Best Overall
- RESTORE WORN STONES TO LIKE-NEW IN MINUTES Your whetstones dish out with use, and a cupped stone ruins your sharpening angle — and your edges. This dual-grit flattening stone re-levels any waterstone, oil stone, or ceramic stone fast: most users flatten a badly dished stone in about 5 minutes and rinse it off flat as new.
- DUAL GRIT DOES COARSE AND FINE - ONE TOOL Use the 120-grit side for coarse water stones (900 grit and below) where you need aggressive cutting, and flip to the 320-grit side for fine stones (1000 grit and up) so you don't scratch a premium finish. No guessing, no second tool, no changing sandpaper.
- FULL 8-INCH SURFACE FLATTENS ANY STONE At 7.99" x 2.79", the flattening area is large enough to true a full-size whetstone in one pass instead of working it in sections — faster, more even results with less effort than compact flatteners.
- DIAMOND-GROOVE PATTERN CLEARS THE MESS AS YOU WORK The diamond-shaped groove pattern channels away slurry and waste while it cuts, so the abrasive keeps biting instead of clogging. Tip: work at the sink under a light water flow with a towel handy — the slurry builds fast, and rinsing as you go lets you see your progress and speeds up the job.
- PREMIUM SILICON CARBIDE — CUTS QUICKER, WEARS SLOWER Built from high-quality black silicon carbide chosen to remove material fast while holding its own surface longer than soft flatteners. Backed by Sharp Pebble responsive support — if anything arrives less than flat, we make it right.
How to flatten the stone
- Check the instructions. Confirm the stone’s type and grit, and verify that the chosen plate or abrasive is compatible. Note the manufacturer’s directions for water, movement, and cleanup.
- Draw a pencil grid. Mark a grid across the stone’s working face. As you lap, disappearing marks indicate where the flattening surface has made contact; marks that remain reveal areas still untouched.
- Prepare the surfaces as directed. For SHAPTON’s KUBO procedure, place the plate stably with its stone-correction face upward and wet it; let the sharpening stone absorb plenty of water. DMT’s instructions call for wet use, with immersion or running water as directed. These are product-specific procedures—follow the directions for your own tool.
- Lap with even, overlapping movement. DMT specifies long, overlapping figure-eight strokes with light to moderate pressure, using the full plate surface. SHAPTON’s KUBO procedure instead calls for repeating its illustrated motions, turning the stone 180 degrees, and repeating. Do not treat either movement pattern as universal.
- Check the grid and continue as needed. Inspect the face as pencil marks disappear. Continue until contact is even across the working face and it has been restored flat. The cited instructions do not establish a numeric flatness tolerance.
- Finish and clean up. SHAPTON recommends lightly finishing the stone once flat and chamfering its edges. Its KUBO instructions also call for rinsing slurry from the plate promptly and recommend using a brush. Follow your own flattening tool’s cleanup directions.
How often should you flatten a sharpening stone?
Advice varies by maker. SHAPTON Co., Ltd. recommends lapping its stone whenever a blade is to be sharpened, while Lee Valley notes that using the full stone face during sharpening can reduce the need for flattening. Inspect for wear and follow your stone maker’s guidance; avoid sharpening only on a narrow central strip if you want to distribute wear across the face.
