How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats in Houseplants—and Find the Source

To control fungus gnats, find the breeding source first. For houseplants, adjust watering, remove decaying debris, and use sticky cards as a supplement—not a soil cure.

For fungus gnats in houseplants, find the breeding source, let the soil surface dry between waterings when the plant can tolerate it, clear away decaying plant material, and use yellow sticky cards to catch or monitor adults. Traps alone do not eliminate larvae in the soil. If the flies are coming from a drain, clean the drain or trap instead. The recommendations below are based on university extension and integrated pest management guidance—not interviews with five exterminators.

First, find where the gnats are breeding

“Gnats” can mean different small flies, so do not assume every flying insect near a houseplant is a fungus gnat. Fungus gnats commonly breed in moist, organic potting soil, but moist debris in a drain can also be a source. Maryland Extension recommends checking whether flies emerge from a plant or a drain; Iowa State Extension also lists drains and other moist places as possible habitats.

To help locate the source, cover a suspect plant or drain with screen or cheesecloth and check over the next several days for flies emerging there, as described by Maryland Extension. Once you know the source, treat it directly rather than relying on traps placed wherever adults happen to fly.

If the source is a houseplant, make the soil less welcoming

Adjust watering to the plant

Fungus gnat larvae do well in persistently moist, organic soil. Let the surface dry between waterings if that is appropriate for the plant, and do not leave the pot sitting in standing water. The right dry depth is not universal: Virginia Cooperative Extension advises drying the top 0.5 inch, Oregon State discusses waiting until the top inch is dry, and Cornell says keeping the top two inches dry discourages gnats. Use the guidance that fits the plant and growing conditions; do not let a moisture-sensitive plant dry out simply to meet a fixed depth.

Remove decaying material

Clear dead leaves and other decaying plant debris from the soil surface. This removes material associated with the moist organic conditions fungus gnat larvae favor, alongside the watering adjustment described by Virginia Cooperative Extension and Washington State University Pestsense.

Cleanuper 58 Pack Yellow Sticky Gnat Traps for Plants - Fungus Gnat Killer, Fruit Fly Traps for Indoors, Gnat Sticky Traps for Plants, Family Friendly Design, Sunflower + Butterfly Shapes
  • [Catches Gnats, Fruit Flies, Whiteflies And More] Yellow sticky traps with top-grade adhesive grab fungus gnats, aphids, fruit flies, thrips, and whiteflies on contact from both faces. Place each card at soil level near drainage holes for fastest results. Works for indoor plants and outdoor gardens.
  • [Decorative Shapes That Stay In Your Pots Year-Round] Yellow sunflower and butterfly designs look intentional in any plant display rather than calling out a pest problem. The yellow color attracts insects and decorates at the same time. Leave one trap per pot as a permanent monitoring layer; if a new infestation starts, you will spot insects on the surface before your plants show damage. Two options offer flexibility across pot sizes and styles.
  • [Peels Clean Without Tearing] Start at the bottom and slowly peel one protective film at a time to cleanly reveal the adhesive face. The thicker rigid plastic stake and trap keep the card flat and straight throughout setup so you do not wrestle a floppy surface. No glue on hands, tearing, accidental folding before insertion, or hassle. Three steps: peel, hold, push into soil.
  • [Family Friendly Design & Odorless] The family friendly physical adhesive trap is odorless and leaves no residue on surfaces near your plants. Keep out of direct reach to avoid hair or skin contact with the glue surface.
  • [Works Indoors, Outdoors And In Hanging Baskets] UV-resistant construction holds up under direct sunlight without degrading the adhesive. The pointed plastic stake inserts directly into soil; use the included wire to hang traps near hanging baskets, window herb gardens, or bare-root seedling trays where no soil is available. Two deployment modes, one pack.

Use sticky cards for adults, not as a stand-alone cure

Place yellow sticky cards in or near affected pots to catch adult flies and track whether they are still active. Extension sources recommend them for monitoring or capturing adults, including Virginia Cooperative Extension and Maryland Extension. They do not reach larvae in the soil, so pair traps with source control rather than treating fewer visible adults as proof that the infestation is gone.

Consider a labeled Bti treatment if larvae persist

Some Bti products are described by Maryland Extension and Oregon State as soil drenches for fungus gnat larvae. This is an optional larval treatment, not a treatment for flying adults, and not every Bti product or formulation is necessarily labeled for indoor plant soil. Follow the specific product label for permitted plants, dilution, application, and storage.

If the source is a drain, clean the drain

Plant-soil treatments will not address flies breeding in drain buildup. Clean the drain trap or buildup, or use an appropriate commercial drain cleaner according to its instructions, as advised by Maryland Extension.

When to consider replacing the soil or removing the plant

If a plant is heavily infested and other measures have not worked, more disruptive options may be appropriate. Cornell describes replacing the soil and cleaning the pot and roots; handle roots carefully. Oregon State says a heavily infested plant may be removed if other steps fail.

Why adults may still appear after cleanup

Fungus gnats have multiple life stages, so adult flies can remain visible after you have started addressing the soil. At 75°F, the UC Statewide IPM Program gives approximate timings of three days for eggs to hatch, about 10 days for larvae to develop into pupae, and about four more days for adults to emerge. It describes a generation as about 17 days at that temperature, with timing depending on temperature; this is a reference point, not a guaranteed household schedule.
