To make the classic vampire pumpkin candle, hollow a small white pumpkin, cut an opening sized to a red votive, carve two curved fangs, draw on beady eyes, and set the votive inside. It’s a quick Halloween decoration using a ready-made candle—not a wax-pouring project.
What you’ll need
- A small white pumpkin
- A red votive candle
- Pumpkin carving tools
- A small spoon
- A black marker
This supply list follows Leah Bergman’s Freutcake tutorial, published October 8, 2014.
How to make the vampire face
- Mark the opening. Use the flat sticker base of the votive as a guide to trace a circle on top of the pumpkin. The opening should be large enough for the candle to fit.
- Cut and hollow the pumpkin. Cut along the circle, remove the top, and scoop out the contents with a small spoon.
- Carve the fangs. Use pumpkin carving tools to cut two small, curved fangs into the front of the pumpkin.
- Draw the eyes. Add two small, beady eyes with the black marker.
- Set the candle inside. Place the red votive in the opening. Bergman describes the red wax dripping down the pumpkin as the candle burns, creating the effect.
Votive or poured wax: which method fits?

The poured-wax method is a different project, not part of the vampire-votive tutorial. The Kitchn’s version involves hollowing and scraping the pumpkin, positioning a wick, melting wax in short microwave bursts, pouring carefully while holding the wick upright, recentering it as the wax turns opaque, letting the wax cool, and trimming the wick to about 1/2 inch.
Use a flame carefully
- Never leave a burning candle unattended, as CandleTech advises in its Mini Pumpkin Candles guidance.
- If you choose the separate poured-wax method, The Kitchn advises using a hot pad and trivet when handling the container of melted wax.
The cited tutorials do not establish a tested burn time or a complete safety standard for burning a candle inside a fresh pumpkin. Treat the pumpkin as a decoration that needs supervision while lit; do not assume the sources establish a safe unattended-use condition.
