Martha Stewart’s organizing advice starts with editing, not shopping: decide what belongs in your home now, then give the things you use a convenient place to live. That sequence helps prevent buying containers for belongings you may not need—and makes kitchens, closets, and entryways easier to use day to day.
Start by clearing what no longer serves your home
Before rearranging a cabinet or buying a rack, look at what you own. Keep items that have a purpose in your home as it is today, rather than holding onto them for an imagined past or future. Stewart’s examples of things to reconsider include unused tote bags and receipts, food-storage containers without lids, old utensils, expired beauty products, clothes that no longer fit, unused charging cords, and exercise equipment you no longer use.
Once you have edited a category, group the remaining items by type. That makes it easier to see how much storage you actually need and to choose a place that suits how often you use each item. The aim is not to make every shelf look alike; it is to make useful belongings easy to find and put away.
Make everyday kitchen work easier
Keep frequently used tools within reach
An over-counter rack with hooks and shelves can hold utensils and other tools you reach for often. In a kitchen with limited counter or cabinet space, open shelving or an overhead pan rack can also put frequently used cookware in an accessible spot. Use these options only where they fit the room and leave the work area comfortable to use.

Give food containers a simple home
Keep containers together in one drawer or cabinet area, and choose stackable pieces if they suit the space. Stand lids upright in a divider or an office file sorter so you can see and retrieve the right size without unstacking a pile. Before buying an organizer, check that it fits the cabinet and the containers you have kept.
Make under-sink supplies reachable
A pullout shelf or lazy Susan can bring frequently used cleaning supplies forward from a deep cabinet. A tension rod can hold spray bottles, while adhesive hooks can keep gloves and brushes off the cabinet floor. Check clearance around plumbing and stored items before installing any organizer.

Use refrigerator zones thoughtfully
Martha Stewart’s refrigerator guide suggests leaving eggs in their carton on a shelf rather than in the door, placing milk and similar dairy toward the colder rear of an upper shelf, keeping leftovers visible in clear containers, and separating fruits and vegetables. It also suggests storing meat low in the refrigerator and drinks or condiments in the door. Build a small entryway command center
A few well-placed features can give keys, mail, and daily reminders a consistent place without requiring a large mudroom. Choose a setup that fits the available wall space and does not obstruct the door or walkway.

Use consistent hangers where they help
Matching hangers create a more uniform closet and can make a crowded rail easier to scan. First remove clothes that no longer fit or serve your current needs; changing hangers cannot solve a closet that is still holding items you do not use.

Fold towels into compact stacks
For Stewart’s compact towel fold, fold the towel lengthwise in thirds. Fold the resulting long strip in thirds again, then stack it with similar linens. The method creates a tidy, repeatable shape for shelves or cabinets.
