First check whether the sash is designed to tilt inward. For fixed glass, consider a compatible magnetic cleaner or extension pole; if neither gives safe access, hire a window-cleaning professional. Never lean out, climb through the opening, or overreach.
Start by identifying how the window opens
Window designs and operating instructions vary. Identify the window and check its manufacturer’s directions before releasing latches or moving a sash. A tilt-in feature is useful only if that particular window is designed for it.
Clean a tilt-in sash
Follow the window’s instructions
Use the model-specific procedure to release and tilt the sash. For example, Andersen says its 100 Series double-hung sashes tilt inward to allow cleaning both sides of the glass; its instructions are specific to that product and are not universal directions for other windows. Support the sash while you work
Keep the tilted sash supported rather than assuming it will stay in place. Andersen instructs users to hold it or rest it on a table or chair to help prevent accidental damage. Clean the exposed exterior glass with suitable, nonabrasive supplies, then return and secure the sash as directed by its manufacturer.

Choose an indoor method for fixed or hard-to-reach glass
Magnetic cleaner for compatible fixed panes
A magnetic window cleaner uses one cleaning half inside and another outside, allowing you to guide the exterior pad from indoors. Compatibility is essential: check the specific cleaner’s current instructions for the glass thickness and configuration, frame clearance, tether, and retrieval method. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for attaching and using its safety cord, and start cautiously. Stop if the outer unit slips or you cannot control it. Tyroler’s instructions describe one magnetic-cleaner design; this is manufacturer information, not an independent performance test or a guarantee that the tool will work on every window.
Extension pole when you can stay securely indoors
A suitable telescoping pole and cleaning head may reach glass that is accessible from a stable indoor position. Check that the pole provides the required reach and that its head suits the task. A long tool does not make leaning out or stretching from an insecure position safe. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) gives telescopic water-fed poles and cleaning windows from inside as examples of ways to avoid work at height where practicable in its workplace guidance: HSE guidance on window cleaning at height.

Know when to stop and call a professional
If the sash is not designed to tilt inward and you cannot control a suitable tool from a secure indoor position, leave the exterior pane to a qualified window-cleaning professional with appropriate access methods. Do not lean out, climb through the opening, stand on unstable furniture, or reach beyond a secure position. HSE’s guidance concerns workplaces in the UK, while OSHA’s cited material concerns occupational window-cleaning requirements in the United States; neither should be treated as a household DIY procedure. OSHA’s fall-protection standard sets out professional workplace requirements, not instructions for homeowners.

- Window operation: Is it a tilt-in sash, another type of opening window, or fixed glass? Use only the operating method intended for that window.
- Safe reach: Can you complete the work from a secure indoor position without climbing, leaning out, or overreaching?
- Magnetic cleaner: Does the maker rate it for your glass thickness and configuration? Can you attach the tether and control and retrieve the outside half?
- Extension pole: Does it reach the pane, and can you use its cleaning head without moving into an unsafe position?
- Professional access: If no indoor approach works safely, arrange professional cleaning instead.
A microfiber cloth or nonabrasive squeegee may be useful for glass you can safely reach. No single cleaner or recipe is established here as suitable for every glass type; follow the window and cleaning-tool makers’ directions.
