For routine cleaning, wash shower glass with warm soapy water or diluted mild detergent, then rinse and squeegee it dry. For hard-water deposits or soap scum, VIGO recommends a 50/50 water-and-vinegar solution on the glass. Check your door maker’s care instructions first, especially if the glass is coated or the door has specialty metal finishes.
Choose the method that fits the buildup

Way 1: Wash with warm soapy water
- Wet a soft, nonabrasive cloth or sponge with warm soapy water or mild detergent diluted in water.
- Wipe the glass gently. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, bristle brushes, rough sponges, and sharp tools, which can scratch glass or metal surfaces.
- Rinse the glass and surrounding surfaces thoroughly so cleaner residue does not remain.
- Squeegee the glass, then dry it with a clean, soft cloth.
Delta recommends mild cleaners or warm, soapy water with a soft, nonabrasive cloth, followed by a thorough rinse and squeegee. Sterling also recommends diluted mild detergent for occasional cleaning. See Delta’s shower-door care FAQ and Sterling’s care and cleaning guidance.
Way 2: Treat hard-water deposits with water and vinegar
- Check the door’s care guide to confirm that vinegar is appropriate for its glass, coating, frame, and finishes.
- Mix equal parts water and vinegar. VIGO recommends this 50/50 solution for hard water and soap scum on shower glass.
- Apply it to the glass, then rinse thoroughly. Do not let it sit or run onto hardware if the manufacturer cautions against acids or prolonged exposure.

If gentle cleaning does not remove the buildup
A cleaner specifically labeled for shower doors may be an option if the door maker allows it. Rain-X says its Shower Door X-treme Clean is intended for soap scum, hard-water buildup, calcium, lime, and rust stains. Its directions call for applying the cleaner to a damp soft cloth or directly to the glass, rubbing in a circular motion, rinsing, and wiping dry. Keep glass clearer between cleanings
After each shower, squeegee the glass and dry it with a clean, soft cloth. Delta recommends this to help remove water and prevent spots; Sterling gives similar advice for hard-water areas. The routine can limit residue buildup, but it does not eliminate the need to clean.

- Rinse thoroughly, and do not let products sit or soak on surfaces if the manufacturer prohibits it.
- Before using an unfamiliar commercial cleaner, test it in a small, inconspicuous area if the door maker advises this. Delta warns that repeated use of products containing chemicals on its prohibited list can cause discoloration or loss of clarity and may affect warranty coverage; its restrictions should not be assumed to apply identically to other brands.
- Follow the specific door manufacturer’s care instructions and warranty terms, particularly for coated glass and distinctive metal finishes.
Cloudiness that remains after appropriate cleaning may not be removable with ordinary cleaners. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal diagnosis or restoration method, so do not assume persistent cloudiness is simply residue or that cleaning will restore etched or damaged glass.
