For porch containers that need less fuss, start with herbs suited to pots and match them to the light and watering conditions you can provide. Thyme, sage, Greek oregano, rosemary, parsley, and mint are practical choices—but no container plant is truly no-care: limited potting mix can dry quickly, especially in hot weather.
Choose for your porch’s light and watering conditions
Most culinary herbs grow best in full sun, while some tolerate partial shade. Before buying, note how many hours of direct sun the porch gets and whether the spot is exposed to hot afternoon sun. Plant labels can help confirm a variety’s specific needs. Illinois Extension recommends several herbs for containers, and Georgia Extension describes useful differences in moisture and shade tolerance among them.
Six herbs to grow in porch pots
Thyme
Thyme is a container option that suits gardeners who can avoid keeping the potting mix soggy. Georgia Extension groups thyme with sage as preferring drier conditions. Use a pot with drainage holes and let excess water escape.
Sage
Illinois Extension lists variegated, purple, and golden sage among container choices. Like thyme, sage is suited to drier conditions, so plant it in a well-drained mix rather than a pot that stays wet.

Greek oregano
Greek oregano is another herb recommended for containers. Give it a draining pot, and check the plant label for the light needs of the variety you buy.
Rosemary
Rosemary grows in containers, but it can become a large bush in a sunny location. Check its mature size and choose a container with enough room for growth. Whether it survives winter outdoors depends on local climate; do not assume a porch pot will overwinter successfully in every region.

Parsley
Parsley is a useful choice for a porch that does not get full sun all day: Georgia Extension says it can tolerate some shade and is easy to grow. It is still important to keep its potting mix from becoming waterlogged.
Mint
Mint tolerates a wider range of conditions, including some shade, but it spreads through its container and can overwhelm nearby plants. Give it a pot of its own rather than planting it in a shared arrangement.

Set up containers to make care easier
- Use drainage: Choose a pot with drainage holes and loose, well-drained potting mix. Illinois Extension advises watering until water begins to drain from the holes.
- Group compatible plants: Combine herbs only when their light and water needs are compatible; a matching look is not enough.
- Keep growth compact: Pinch plants during the growing season to encourage bushier growth, remove dead or diseased leaves, and avoid overfertilizing, as Illinois Extension advises.
- Consider pot color and exposure: A dark container in full summer sun can heat the roots and dry the mix faster. Illinois Extension suggests moving it to shade or choosing plants that tolerate hot root zones and drier soil.
Water by checking the pot, not by the calendar
There is no single watering schedule for every porch container. Frequency changes with the season, location, container type, how long the pot has been planted, and the plants growing in it. Illinois Extension’s guidance is straightforward: “Water requirements vary from plant to plant.”
Check the potting mix instead of relying on a fixed routine. Illinois Extension suggests watering when the top inch or so is dry, then applying enough water to moisten the whole soil ball and let the excess drain. Outdoor container herbs may need daily watering in hot weather, according to University of Minnesota Extension. Avoid letting the mix become severely dry, but do not leave roots sitting in water.

Choose other herbs if they suit your space better
The six plants above are a useful shortlist, not a scientifically ranked list of the easiest herbs. Climate, cultivar, pot size, and porch exposure all affect how much attention a plant needs. Illinois Extension also lists chives, marjoram, summer savory, and bush basil as herbs to grow in containers.
