For a faucet or other manufacturer-approved, non-stone surface, loosen mineral residue with a soft cloth and a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, then rinse thoroughly and dry. Never mix vinegar—or any acidic cleaner—with bleach. If a mark is on natural stone, an unknown finish, or a surface that looks etched rather than crusty, skip acids and use the manufacturer’s approved method instead.
Hard-water stains are usually mineral residue, chiefly calcium and magnesium, left behind as water evaporates. A visible spot alone does not show whether water is safe to drink, and a cloudy mark may also be etching, scratching, corrosion, coating damage, or soap residue. Identify the surface before choosing a cleaner.
What hard-water stains are—and what they may not be
Hardness refers to dissolved calcium and magnesium in water. When hard water evaporates or is heated, mineral residue or scale can remain on fixtures and other surfaces. A mark that returns where water repeatedly dries is consistent with mineral residue, but it cannot be diagnosed with certainty from appearance alone.
USGS describes general hardness bands as soft (0–60 mg/L as CaCO3), moderately hard (61–120), hard (121–180), and very hard (over 180). These broad categories do not establish the hardness of your household water; check with your local water utility, health agency, or a qualified local water-treatment source for household-specific information.

White or cloudy marks can also come from soap residue, scratches, etching, corrosion, or damage to a finish. If a gentle, compatible cleaning method does not improve the surface, stop rather than escalating to stronger chemicals or abrasion.
Safety first: match the method to the surface
Read the manufacturer’s care instructions before cleaning. Test an inconspicuous area if the material or coating is uncertain, keep cleaner off adjacent surfaces, and follow product-label directions for use and protective equipment. Ventilate the area. Never layer products: rinse with plain water and allow the surface to dry before changing methods.

Never mix cleaning products. In particular, do not combine bleach with vinegar, limescale remover, toilet cleaner, ammonia, or any other cleaner. The CDC advises against mixing bleach with other cleaners or disinfectants; Poison Control notes that vinegar and chlorine bleach can produce irritating chlorine gas. If products are accidentally mixed and fumes are present, leave the area for fresh air and seek appropriate poison-control or emergency guidance.
Never use vinegar on marble, limestone, or travertine. If you do not know whether tile or a counter is natural stone, treat it as acid-sensitive until you verify it. The Natural Stone Institute recommends a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dish detergent with warm water for natural stone, followed by thorough rinsing and soft drying. Avoid abrasives and hydrofluoric-acid products on stone.

A cautious cleaning method for compatible surfaces
- Identify the surface. Distinguish among metal finishes, ceramic or porcelain, glass, acrylic or fiberglass, natural stone, dishwasher glassware, and appliance components. Follow the maker’s instructions if they differ from general guidance.
- Start gently. Wipe with water and a soft, non-abrasive cloth or sponge to remove loose residue.
- Use vinegar only if the maker permits it. For a compatible faucet finish, Delta advises a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water, followed by a thorough rinse. Kohler describes soaking a towel in a 50/50 white-vinegar and warm-water solution, wrapping it around the affected faucet area for about five to ten minutes, then wiping with a clean cloth or soft sponge.
- Rinse and dry. Rinse with plain water and dry immediately. Avoid long soaks and keep the solution off nearby stone, trim, and finishes that are not approved for it.
- Stop if there is no improvement. Do not move on to stronger chemicals, blades, pumice, or aggressive scrubbing. Ask the product maker or a qualified local professional about the surface.
Quick guidance by surface
| Surface or problem | Conservative approach | Do not generalize |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible metal faucet finish | Soft cloth; if the maker permits, short-contact 50/50 white vinegar and water, then rinse and dry. | Do not use abrasives, bleach, toilet-bowl cleaners, or strong acids unless the exact maker explicitly approves them. |
| Marble, limestone, travertine, or unknown natural stone | Neutral stone cleaner, stone soap, or mild dish detergent with warm water; rinse and dry. | No vinegar, lemon, or other acids; avoid abrasives and hydrofluoric-acid rust removers. |
| Shower glass or tile | Remove droplets after use; clean routinely with a non-abrasive sponge and dry. | Do not assume a cleaner safe for glass or tile is also safe for nearby stone, metal trim, or coatings. |
| Dishwasher glassware or interior | Use dishwasher rinse aid as directed by the model manual. | Do not pour vinegar into the rinse-aid system; Whirlpool warns its acidity can harm hoses, gaskets, and other internal components. |
| Persistent scale across the home | Confirm local hardness information; consider a properly selected cation-exchange softener if appropriate. | Do not assume a softener addresses every water-quality issue or has no water and salt costs. |
How to prevent marks from returning
- Remove droplets after use. Use a shower squeegee or soft cloth on shower glass and other compatible wet surfaces. Removing droplets before they evaporate helps prevent deposits.
- Clean gently and routinely. Regular surface-appropriate care is safer than waiting for a thick deposit and then using aggressive descaling.
- Follow the finish maker’s instructions. Use non-abrasive care for faucets and the recommended non-acidic method for stone.
- Use dishwasher rinse aid as directed. Keep the dispenser filled according to the appliance manual. Rinse aid helps water sheet off in the final rinse and can reduce spots and white residue. Do not substitute vinegar in the rinse-aid system.
- Confirm the water condition before buying treatment equipment. Ask your local utility or health agency, or consult a qualified local water-treatment source, rather than treating one stain as proof of household hardness.
When a water softener may help
A cation-exchange water softener replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium ions. For confirmed, recurring hardness, it may reduce the source of scale and help protect fixtures and appliances. It does not remove existing deposits or address every water-quality issue, and regeneration uses water and salt. EPA advises considering both water and salt efficiency.
If comparing residential cation-exchange systems, look for NSF/ANSI 44 certification and compare the specific certified claims. NSF describes the standard as covering hardness reduction as well as safety, structural, performance, and user-information requirements. Certification does not guarantee the system is correctly sized or installed, or suitable for every water source.

When to ask for help
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified local professional if the material is unknown, the finish is specialty-coated, a compatible gentle method does not help, or the surface appears etched or damaged. A persistent whole-home pattern is a reason to confirm water conditions locally before choosing treatment. Do not assume that a particular stain proves a plumbing defect or a drinking-water safety problem.
FAQ
Are hard-water stains proof that tap water is unsafe?
No. Hardness and visible deposits alone do not assess broader water quality or show that water is unsafe to drink. Ask your local water utility or health agency about household-specific water information.

Can I use vinegar on every hard-water stain?
No. Use vinegar only when the surface manufacturer permits it. Never use it on marble, limestone, travertine, or unknown natural stone, and do not use it on a faucet finish unless the maker approves it.
How do I clean a compatible faucet with vinegar?
If the faucet maker permits it, use a soft cloth with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, then rinse thoroughly and dry. Some maker guidance describes a short towel wrap of about five to ten minutes; do not assume that timing is safe for other finishes or materials.
Why do hard-water spots keep coming back?
Mineral residue can remain when water droplets evaporate. Removing droplets after use and regular gentle cleaning can help; if scale recurs throughout the home, confirm the local water condition before considering treatment.
Can I use vinegar in my dishwasher to prevent spots?
Do not pour vinegar into the dishwasher’s rinse-aid system. Use rinse aid as directed by the appliance manual; Whirlpool warns vinegar’s acidity can harm internal components such as hoses and gaskets.

Will a water softener stop every spot?
No. A properly selected softener can reduce calcium and magnesium scale when hardness is confirmed, but it uses water and salt during regeneration and does not address every water-quality issue or remove old deposits.
