A downdraft vent can preserve open sightlines where an overhead hood is unwanted, but confirm that the vent and cooktop are compatible and that the duct route works before buying. Manufacturer U.S. listings checked on October 4, 2026 show appliance prices from $1,241 to $2,499 for the examples below; installation and any required accessories are separate, and a reliable universal installed cost is not established by the available sources.
A downdraft draws cooking vapors down near the cooking surface rather than capturing them in an overhead canopy. Its fit and performance depend on the exact appliance, cookware placement, airflow, clean filters, and installation. Treat the product specifications as model-specific, not as a ranking of all downdraft vents.
What to Compare Before Buying
- Confirm compatibility and dimensions. Check the installation manuals for both the downdraft and cooktop, including cutout, clearances, and width. GE says its cited telescopic downdraft can be installed with most gas and electric cooktops, but not with rangetop cooktops or ranges.
- Check the rise and capture position. Make sure the vent extends appropriately for the cooktop and cookware. JennAir’s product comparison lists 600 CFM and 7.9 sones at top speed for a particular retractable configuration; those figures do not apply to every model.
- Plan the blower and duct route. Identify whether a blower is included or sold separately, where it will sit, the outlet direction, duct dimensions, and the total equivalent duct run. Follow the exact model’s instructions; a headline airflow rating does not guarantee the same airflow after a difficult duct route.
- Choose ducted or recirculating operation. Ducted systems exhaust outdoors. Compatible recirculating setups filter air and return it to the room, but may require a separate kit and replacement charcoal filters. Do not assume a kit is included or that every model supports recirculation.
- Compare sound, cleaning, parts, and warranty. Compare sound ratings at the same fan setting where possible. Check access for cleaning, availability of replacement filters, and warranty details. Do not treat brands’ headline CFM or sound figures as directly comparable unless their test conditions match.

What the Full Job Costs
The listed appliance prices do not establish an installed cost. The research reviewed for this article did not find a comparable installed-cost survey or labor rate, so a universal project total would be misleading. Ask an installer to inspect the duct route, cabinet and floor space, electrical access, exterior termination, required makeup air, and finish repairs. Request a written quote that separates the appliance, materials, labor, accessories, and modifications.
Budget separately for any compatible recirculation kit or replacement filter. Bosch’s 2022 guide identifies the HDDREC5UC kit and HDDFILTUC replacement charcoal filter for its HDD series, with replacement timing every six months depending on use; check current instructions and compatibility. JennAir’s ductless accessory page lists a kit at $255.99 MSRP, but compatibility must be verified for the chosen setup.

- 【Material】The 4 inch backdraft damper is made of a Galvanized steel, the flap leaves are made of aluminum
- 【Installation】The backdraft damper is installed by pushing it into the ventilation pipe as far as it will go. The position of the spring should be horizontal when the flap is installed horizontally so that it can be opened and closed optimally. This also applies to the vertical installation
- 【Function】This airflow regulating backdraft shutter fits over the TD lip and is designed to improve ventilation by preventing air from re-circulating when the fans are not in use
- 【Wide Application】 These backdraft dampers can be widely used in ACs, exhaust fans, extractors, range hoods, heating ducts, vents and other residential, commercial and industrial applications
- 【Note】Back draught valves can be inserted into ventilation ducts which are flexible or non flexible. Cannot be used with plastic ducts as the sizes are different. All dimensions are measured manually, please allow 1-3mm differences
What to Avoid
- Buying before confirming the cooktop and downdraft work together. Check both manuals and cutout dimensions; GE’s cited telescopic system guidance excludes rangetops and ranges.
- Assuming a 600 CFM headline means the installed system will deliver that airflow. Duct length, elbows, and design matter.
- Planning a long or sharply bent duct route without checking the exact manual. JennAir’s guidance calls for no more than three 90-degree elbows, at least 18 inches of straight duct between multiple elbows, and a maximum 60-foot equivalent system length. These are JennAir guidance, not universal code rules; the model manual and local rules govern.
- Assuming recirculation is included. Check whether a kit is required, how it routes, whether it is compatible, and which replacement filters it needs.
- Treating a promotional appliance price as a project cost or assuming a listed model fits an existing opening. Verify price, availability, dimensions, and installation requirements.
Ducted or Recirculating?
A ducted downdraft carries exhaust outdoors. A recirculating setup filters air and returns it to the kitchen, and may be an option where exterior venting is not practical. It is model-dependent: the system may need a separate kit, internal routing, and replacement filters. For example, Bosch’s 2022 guide lists compatible accessories for its HDD series, while JennAir lists a ductless kit with a compatibility warning. Always check current product instructions.
Installation Planning
Plan the duct route and blower arrangement before ordering. JennAir’s installation guidance says to minimize duct length and elbows. For its guidance, the maximum equivalent vent-system length is 60 feet, with no more than three 90-degree elbows and at least 18 inches of straight duct between multiple elbows. JennAir also advises a vent run 20% shorter above 4,500 feet. These figures are model guidance, not general requirements; the chosen model’s manual and local code take precedence.

- An antidraft duct insert designed for use with range hoods, bathroom fans and other home HVAC applications.
- Features outer rubber gaskets that create an airtight seal and grip between the damper and ducts.
- Mounts horizontally or vertically to prevent backflow and debris from entering ducting.
- Galvanized steel body with spring-loaded aluminum damper blades that open with minimal airflow.
- Fit for 6 in. Duct Openings | Product Length: 5.03 inches | Finish: Powder Coat
GE advises checking local residential codes, and JennAir notes that makeup-air thresholds vary by locale. Check local requirements before selecting equipment, especially where the project changes exhaust capacity or penetrates an exterior wall or roof.
Follow JennAir’s operating advice for its retractable system: run it before cooking, keep filters installed and clean, and account for other air currents. If a downdraft does not remove smoke or odor well, check that the filters are clean, the vent is operating as instructed, cookware is positioned appropriately, and the installed duct route follows the manual. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance comparison.

FAQ
What is a downdraft vent?
It is a ventilation system that draws cooking vapors down near the cooktop. A retractable model rises behind the cooking surface when used and retracts when idle. Its exhaust may be ducted outdoors or recirculated if the specific model supports that setup.
Can a downdraft vent be installed with a gas cooktop?
Some downdrafts are compatible with gas cooktops, but compatibility depends on the exact products. GE says its cited telescopic downdraft works with most gas and electric cooktops but not rangetop cooktops or ranges. Check both installation manuals before ordering.
