No: the viral “$1,000 Anthropologie rock” was a prank, not a real product for sale. Creator Phoebe Adams first presented an ordinary stone as a $150 Anthropologie purchase in a video for her boyfriend, Dan. A later staged display made the gag’s price tag climb to $1,000, and Anthropologie joined in with social content. Neither price was for a verified retail listing.
How the $1,000 rock joke started
In September 2025, Phoebe Adams posted a video in which she presented an ordinary rock to her boyfriend, Dan, as home decor she had bought at Anthropologie for $150. The Daily Dot dates the video to September 14; The Philadelphia Inquirer’s account of Adams and Dan describes how the clip spread.
Follow-up clips escalated the premise with an apparent in-store display and an ostensible $1,000 price. Those were part of the joke, not evidence that Anthropologie had priced or stocked a rock for that amount. The $150 and $1,000 figures belong to the prank’s setup.
Did Anthropologie actually sell the rock?
There is no verified Anthropologie product listing for the viral stone. The object began as an ordinary found rock used as a prop; the staged display was part of the gag. That is different from a purchasable decor item with a seller, product page and current price.

Why Anthropologie played along
Anthropologie responded to the meme on social media and worked with Adams and Dan on follow-up content at a store. The Inquirer describes that collaboration as a paid partnership. The brand’s Shorty Awards entry also recounts its social response and creator participation.
In the award entry, Anthropologie reported 550 million impressions across owned, earned and press channels, and 15,000 earned mentions across social and media. The entry does not state a submission year, and these are brand-submitted campaign figures, not independently verified counts.

A keepsake, not store inventory
Vogue Business reports that Anthropologie’s team made CEO Tricia Smith a palm-sized rock wrapped in a paper sleeve and bow, packaged as if it were a $1,000 store item. Smith kept it on her desk. That was a personalized keepsake, not a product listing. She described the uncertainty of reacting to an unexpected viral moment: “No one can expect or anticipate it, so how do you respond when something like the rock comes up?”

Yes. Stone sculptures and other stone objects are a real decor category, separate from the viral prank. A Livingetc roundup published October 1, 2025 features examples of stone decor. Treat these as adjacent styling options, not Anthropologie merchandise or versions of the viral rock; check individual sellers for current products and prices.
