You can make a working demonstration flashlight with a battery, a light source, conductive connections and a switch. The simplest build pairs a CR2032 coin cell with a white LED; a larger alternative uses two D-cell batteries and a 3-volt flashlight bulb inside a cardboard tube. These are educational projects, not rugged or weatherproof emergency lights.
How a flashlight circuit works
A flashlight needs a complete electrical path: the battery supplies energy, conductive material carries it, the LED or bulb uses it to produce light, and a switch opens or closes the path. When the switch is open, the path is interrupted and the light is off. When it closes the path, current can flow.
For an LED, direction matters. Its positive and negative sides must be oriented to match the battery. IEEE-USA’s simple LED flashlight activity shows that reversing only the LED or only the battery prevents the LED from lighting; reversing both restores the matching orientation.
Choose a build

The consulted build instructions do not provide comparable measured brightness, beam distance or runtime, so there is no supported performance ranking between these designs.

Make the compact coin-cell LED flashlight
Gather the parts
- One 3-volt coin-cell battery, such as a CR2032
- One white LED
- Two narrow strips of aluminum foil
- One small metal binder clip
- Thin bare wire or a flexible paper clip
- Corrugated cardboard or a large craft stick
- Tape and hot glue
This design follows IEEE-USA’s classroom activity. Metal parts and foil conduct electricity; tape insulates, so keep tape from covering the contact points.
Assemble and test the circuit
- Use the cardboard or craft stick as a base. Arrange the coin cell and LED so each can be held in place while their contacts remain accessible.
- Use the foil strips and wire to make the conductive path between one battery terminal and the LED, then from the LED back to the other battery terminal through the switch. Keep the LED’s polarity aligned with the battery.
- Use the binder clip as the switch, arranging it so its leg can make or break contact with the battery. When the leg touches the battery and completes the path, the LED should light; lifting it opens the circuit.
- Once the light turns on and off reliably, secure the parts to the base with tape or hot glue without covering the electrical contacts or trapping the switch in one position.
Build the cardboard-tube bulb version
For a tube-shaped alternative, use the components listed for Energizer’s North American flashlight activity: two D cells, insulated copper bell wire, a 3-volt flashlight bulb, a cardboard tube, brads, a paperclip switch, electrical tape and a small cardboard piece. TeachEngineering describes a related classroom version using a #40 bulb and bulb holder, with reflective material behind the light source.

Place the batteries and bulb so the tube can hold them in position, then connect one battery terminal to the bulb and return from the bulb to the other terminal through the paperclip switch. The switch should interrupt one section of the path when open and reconnect it when closed. Use reflective material behind the bulb if desired to help direct light forward. The Energizer and TeachEngineering lists differ in their specified bulb and holder details; keep each build’s battery and light-source specifications together rather than assuming components are interchangeable.

Fix a flashlight that does not light
- Check the switch: Make sure the binder clip or paperclip actually closes the conductive path when moved.
- Check contact: Confirm foil or wire touches the battery and light-source contacts securely. Tape is an insulator, so it should not separate metal parts that need to touch.
- Check LED polarity: If using the coin-cell design, turn the LED around; if that alone does not help, check the battery orientation as well.
- Check for movement: Connections that work while still may loosen when the flashlight is handled. Reposition and secure the parts so contact remains steady.
Build safely
- When practical, remove the battery while arranging or changing connections.
- Do not make or maintain a direct connection between battery terminals. TeachEngineering warns that stripped wire ends held on D-cell terminals can heat up.
- Keep exposed wire ends controlled to avoid pokes or cuts, and do not leave the D-cell wire connection in place for an extended time.
- Treat either design as a demonstration rather than an emergency light: the cited activities do not establish weather resistance or ruggedness.
