Turn an intact, small empty wine bottle into a miniature vase without cutting the glass: leave a half-size bottle plain for a few short stems, wrap it in jute for a rustic finish, or paint a floral or dotted pattern. Choose the finish that suits your materials and whether you want the bottle label to show.
Choose a small wine bottle vase idea
A small bottle’s narrow opening can help keep a few short stems together. BottleFirst describes half-size bottles as suitable for miniature floral displays, but bottle dimensions and openings vary, so choose stems that fit your particular bottle.

The project tutorials describe these as accessible crafts, but do not provide a standardized time or skill comparison. Pick the approach based on the finish you want and the supplies you have.
Make a miniature bud vase with no added finish
- Check the bottle. Choose a small, intact bottle with no chips or cracks.
- Wash and rinse it. Remove any remaining wine and let the bottle dry.
- Decide about the label. Keep it for a simple upcycled look, or remove it if you prefer bare glass.
- Add a few short stems. Keep the arrangement small enough for the bottle’s opening and proportions. Dried florals are another option.
Wrap a bottle in jute for a rustic vase
This finish adds texture and can cover a label without removing it. The method follows Busy Creating Memories’ upcycled flower vase tutorial.

Gather materials
- Clean, dry small wine bottle
- Jute cord or twine
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Optional burlap ribbon and a small flower or heart embellishment
Wrap the bottle
- Apply hot glue at the bottle’s base and secure the end of the jute.
- Wrap the cord tightly around the bottle, keeping each turn close to the previous one. Add glue every few wraps to hold it in place.
- As the bottle narrows toward the shoulder and neck, add glue more often so the cord is less likely to slip.
- Secure the end of the cord, then add optional burlap ribbon or an embellishment.
Paint flowers, dots or bands on the glass
For a painted wine bottle vase, start with a clean, dry surface so residue does not interfere with the finish. Crafts by Amanda’s polka-dot vase tutorial describes soaking labels in hot water, cleaning off glue, wiping the bottle with rubbing alcohol, and adding dots with acrylic craft paint. Green Matters’ painted vase tutorial describes masking a pattern and using at least two coats of water-based acrylic paint.
Prepare the bottle
- Wash and dry the bottle. If removing the label, soak it in hot water and clean off leftover adhesive.
- For a painted design, make sure the glass is free of residue and completely dry. One tutorial uses a rubbing-alcohol wipe after label and glue removal.
- If you want stripes or a band, apply painter’s tape to mark the pattern before painting.
Paint and decorate
- Apply the base color or masked design in thin coats, allowing each coat to dry before adding another. The Green Matters method calls for at least two coats of water-based acrylic paint.
- Add flowers, dots or other simple details with acrylic craft paint, a brush or a small stamp. Let the decoration dry fully before arranging flowers.
If using spray paint, follow the product label and work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Bogle Family Vineyards’ painted bottle vase project suggests pairing its spray-painted vase with dried flowers.

Use and care for the finished vase
These are decorative upcycling projects. The cited craft instructions do not establish that painted bottle surfaces are suitable for food contact, so use a painted or wrapped bottle as a vase or decoration rather than for food or drink. Avoid cutting the bottle: it is unnecessary for these designs and requires additional tools and careful handling. For a simple flower display, choose a few short stems or dried florals that suit the bottle’s opening.
