Neither PTFE tape nor liquid thread sealant is right for every aluminum engine thread. First check whether the joint is a tapered pipe thread that seals at the threads. For that specific connection type, Henkel lists LOCTITE 567 anaerobic paste for tapered metal pipe threads and fittings, and lists aluminum as a recommended metal; its instructions note that aluminum can slow cure. Henkel also lists its non-curing PTFE tape for threaded plugs on engines. Neither listing makes the product suitable for every engine fastener or fitting.
First determine how the connection seals
Thread sealant is relevant when the threads themselves form the seal. LOCTITE 567 is specified for tapered metal pipe threads and fittings—not as a blanket treatment for every threaded engine part. A straight-thread connection may instead seal at a washer, flare, O-ring, gasket, or mating face; putting tape or paste on those threads may be unnecessary or contrary to the fitting maker’s instructions. Check the engine or fitting documentation before choosing a product.
The engine, thread standard, fluid, pressure, and operating temperature are not specified here, so no particular product can be identified as OEM-approved for a specific repair. Product pages provide manufacturer specifications, not controlled head-to-head tests of tape and paste on the same aluminum joint.
How PTFE tape and liquid sealant differ
PTFE tape
Henkel describes its LOCTITE PTFE Thread Sealing Tape as a non-curing product for pipe materials and lists threaded plugs on engines among its applications, alongside fuel lines, transmission pans and lines, radiators, tanks, coolant lines, and hydraulic systems. That supports considering it for an appropriate threaded engine plug; it does not establish suitability for every engine fitting. Henkel claims compatibility with most chemicals, acids, alkalis, solvents, and gases, but that is not proof of compatibility with every engine fluid or joint.

Henkel’s tape page gives conflicting temperature figures: one section says 260°C (500°F), while another says 160°C (500°F). Because those statements disagree, do not rely on either as the limit for a repair; check the current technical data sheet and product instructions.
Anaerobic liquid paste
Henkel describes LOCTITE 567 as a one-part paste for tapered metal pipe threads and fittings. It cures when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces, and Henkel lists aluminum among its recommended metals. The company says the product’s lubricity and resistance to loosening and leakage from shock and vibration are product characteristics; they are not a guarantee for a particular engine connection.

- No curing time
- Monstrous rolls! (1,429-inches Each)
Aluminum is a passive metal and may slow cure. Henkel advises using an activator if cure is too slow, including in conditions involving passive metals or low temperatures. Its application guidance says to clean and degrease parts, apply a 360-degree band starting one to two threads back from the leading edge, and cover at least three thread roots. Follow the full current product instructions and the fitting maker’s tightening recommendations.
Other named sealants are not interchangeable by default
Henkel describes LOCTITE 577 as a general-purpose metal pipe-fitting sealant and lists an operating range of -55°C to 150°C (-65°F to 300°F). Henkel also notes that aluminum can slow its cure and mentions activator. These are specifications for that product, not evidence that it outperforms tape or is approved for a given engine joint. Permatex lists its High Temperature Thread Sealant for metal threaded fittings in hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, and cooling systems. Suggested applications include head bolts into through holes, oil pressure sensors, oil and coolant lines, fuel fittings, rear axle fill plugs, brake fittings, and power steering fittings. Permatex gives a product range of -54°C to 204°C (-65°F to 400°F) and instructs users to clean and dry parts, apply sealant to the leading male threads while leaving the first thread free, then tighten to the recommended torque. Confirm material and service suitability in the current technical data and OEM instructions. Permatex High Temperature Thread Sealant product information.
Permatex Seal & Lock is a distinct anaerobic compound combining sealing and threadlocking characteristics. Permatex says it works on steel, aluminum alloys, brass, and copper, and lists freeze plugs, oil pressure sensors, coolant temperature sensors, fuel fittings, and oil/cooler lines among its uses. Do not substitute it for a specified thread sealant without confirming it is appropriate for the connection. Permatex Seal & Lock product information.

Choose by the joint and service conditions
Compare only products permitted by the engine or fitting maker. Work through the relevant factors before applying anything:
- Thread and sealing surface: Establish whether the thread is tapered and seals at the threads, or whether a washer, flare, O-ring, gasket, or face makes the seal.
- Materials: Confirm the product is suitable for the metals in the connection. For anaerobic pastes, account for Henkel’s warning that aluminum can slow cure.
- Fluid and service conditions: Check the exact fluid, temperature, and pressure against current product data and the equipment maker’s requirements.
- Cure and assembly: Tape is non-curing; anaerobic paste cures when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces. Follow the maker’s instructions for preparation, cure conditions, and assembly.
- Adjustment and removal: Consider whether the connection needs adjustment during installation or later disassembly, and confirm the product’s suitability for that need.
- Application and passage risk: Use only the prescribed amount and method; excess material entering a fluid passage can create a problem. Follow the fitting-specific guidance rather than borrowing directions from another connection.
Parker’s fitting installation guide illustrates that tape directions depend on the connection context and gives a wrap count for its described application. Do not transfer that count to an unrelated engine joint. Parker Hannifin’s Assembly / Installation guide.

Practical choice for common questions
Can you use PTFE tape on aluminum engine threads?
Henkel lists threaded engine plugs as an application for its tape, so it may be a candidate for a suitable thread-sealing plug connection when the equipment maker permits it. The words “aluminum engine threads” alone do not establish that the joint seals on its threads or that tape is appropriate.
Is liquid sealant better for an engine plug?
There is no supported universal winner. For a tapered metal pipe-thread connection, LOCTITE 567 is a product Henkel specifies, including for aluminum, subject to its slower-cure caveat. For an engine plug, Henkel also lists PTFE tape. The correct choice depends on the plug’s thread and sealing design, service conditions, and manufacturer instructions.
What should you use on an oil pressure sensor?
Do not choose based on the sensor name alone. Permatex lists oil pressure sensors among suggested uses for High Temperature Thread Sealant and Seal & Lock, but the sensor’s thread and sealing arrangement and the engine maker’s instructions still determine whether a thread compound belongs there.
