No linen closet? Store sheets, towels and blankets in underused space you already have, or add a piece of furniture that earns its footprint. The best setup depends on how much you own, where you use it, and whether you want linens visible or tucked away. Start by taking stock, then choose from these 16 practical options.
Choose storage that fits your household
Before buying containers or furniture, estimate how many sheets, towels, duvets and other household textiles you need to store. That gives you a realistic sense of the capacity required. If possible, keep frequently used items near where they are used: bath towels near the bathroom and table linens near the kitchen. Guest bedding and seasonal blankets can go somewhere less convenient. Houzz’s linen-storage guide recommends taking stock and considering use location.
- Measure the space: Check under-bed clearance, drawer dimensions, available wall area and door swing before choosing a solution.
- Choose your visibility: Open shelves make items easy to reach but keep them in view. Cabinets, drawers, benches and dressers conceal clutter.
- Match storage to the contents: Drawers and small bins suit washcloths and dish towels; adjustable shelves and larger cabinets can handle bulkier bedding.
- Consider installation: Freestanding furniture and removable containers can work better for renters than built-ins or wall-mounted systems.
- Secure tall furniture: Anchor tall, heavy cabinets and dressers to the wall, particularly in homes with children, as Houzz advises.
16 ways to store linens without a closet
1. Put a storage bench at the foot of the bed
A bench with a lift-up seat can hold spare sheets or towels while providing a place to sit. If the foot of the bed is too crowded, consider a window seat with storage instead.
2. Give baskets a job in each room
Use a living-room basket for throw blankets, a bedroom basket for sheets or a bathroom basket for rolled towels. Assigning a basket to a particular category keeps everyday linens close at hand.

3. Reserve a hamper for clean towels
A cloth or wicker hamper can hold folded clean towels. If you also use hampers for dirty laundry, make the clean-storage purpose clear so the two uses are not confused.
4. Turn open shelving into a linen closet
Hallway, bathroom or bedroom shelves can hold folded towels and bedding. Add baskets to group smaller items or keep less tidy stacks contained. Open storage is most practical when household members are comfortable putting items away neatly.
5. Add labeled baskets to a coat closet or wall shelf
If an existing coat closet has unused vertical space, add a shelf and use labeled baskets to separate linens by room or type. A shelf on an available wall can serve the same purpose when there is no suitable closet.

7. Make use of the space under the sink
Clear bins can corral small, loose items, while trays or boxes help keep towels and washcloths in orderly stacks. Check the available space around plumbing and cleaning supplies before deciding what will fit.
8. Keep a neat stack in plain sight
Folded or rolled sheets and towels can sit on an open shelf, including under a sink if the space allows. This approach makes the linens easy to see and reach, but it does require keeping the stack orderly.

9. Store occasional-use linens under the bed
Slim bins or fabric storage bags can hold sheets and towels out of sight and help protect them from dust. Measure the clearance under the bed before buying; a bedskirt or long bedding can conceal containers that remain visible from the side.
10. Repurpose a dresser in the hallway or living room
A hallway dresser can double as an entry table, while one in the living area can serve as a TV stand. Use its drawers for linens. A credenza or buffet can provide similar concealed storage.

A tall cabinet with doors creates enclosed storage without requiring a dedicated linen closet. Roomy older cabinets, such as a pie safe or medicine cabinet, may also work. Shelf dividers can separate towels, sheets and other categories.

12. Use the back of a door
An adjustable over-door rack can hold towels and washcloths, while the inside of a closet door can be used for folded sheets and pillowcases. Before installing a rack, check that it clears the door, hardware and surrounding space when the door opens and closes.
13. Roll towels to fit tighter spaces
Fold a towel lengthwise, then roll it into a compact bundle for a shelf, basket or bin. Rolled towels can make useful use of narrow containers and are easy to pick out individually.
14. Hang towels on wall hooks
Hooks store towels vertically and can give a used towel somewhere to air after bathing. Choose a location that is convenient to reach and leaves the towel enough room to dry.

15. Use hidden storage in other furniture
A shoe bench or another storage bench can hold linens in a bedroom or hallway. This is a useful option when you want concealed storage but do not have room for a separate cabinet.
16. Fold and stack towels upright
A KonMari-style fold lets towels stand upright in an open bin or on a shelf, making it easier to see and retrieve one without disturbing the rest of the stack. Use a container that keeps the folded towels from tipping over.

If you are already planning a bathroom or laundry-room update, consider whether a wall shelf or a dedicated cabinet can be added without crowding the room. Organized Living’s closet-design guide suggests considering the laundry room for extra linens, using a bathroom wall where space permits, and looking at over-door storage. These are options to assess against your layout, not one-size-fits-all prescriptions.
In a rental or a home where construction is not practical, freestanding cabinets, furniture with storage, baskets and removable under-bed bags offer ways to adapt without building a closet.
Choose the simplest workable setup
For a small linen collection, a drawer, basket or shelf may be enough. Larger collections may call for a cabinet, dresser or under-bed storage, while a combination—such as everyday towels on a bathroom hook and spare sheets in a bedroom bench—can place each category where it is easiest to use. Keep the arrangement simple enough that everyone in the household can find and put away linens.
