The most direct way to make a custom-sized crafty storage box is Diane Gilleland’s plastic-canvas method: measure the supplies, cut a base and four walls to fit them, stitch the panels with yarn, then add a slightly larger lid. You can decorate the mesh with yarn, raffia, ribbon, or fabric inserts. If you prefer a soft cube, a wrapped cardboard box, or a handled file box, the alternatives below use different tools and give a different result.
Plastic-canvas box: the exact-title project
Diane Gilleland’s Make: tutorial, published January 21, 2010, builds a lidded box from plastic canvas. The dimensions are not fixed: the contents determine the base, and you choose the wall depth. Gilleland recommends making the box slightly larger than currently necessary so it has room for future supplies.
Materials
- Plastic canvas sheets
- Marker, ruler and scissors
- A needle suitable for plastic canvas
- Worsted-weight cotton or wool yarn
- Optional paper raffia, narrow ribbon and fabric scraps
Plan and cut the pieces
- Arrange the items the box will hold and mark a base that is a little larger than their footprint. Check that the base will fit the shelf or drawer where the box will live.
- Choose a wall depth that accommodates the tallest item, with some spare room. Cut four side panels to that height and to the lengths of the base edges.
- Cut the lid panel one row of canvas squares larger than the base on every side. Cut four shallow lid-side strips; the tutorial uses sides about 1–2 inches deep.
Decorate before assembly
Cover selected areas of the mesh with worsted-weight cotton or wool yarn. Paper raffia and narrow ribbon are also named options. A Slanted Gobelin stitch covers area quickly. For fabric accents, cut each insert about 1/2 inch larger than the opening, fold and press the edges under, and sew the insert through the canvas holes.
Join the box and lid
- Place adjoining canvas pieces with their wrong sides together and line up the holes.
- Whipstitch the four box sides to one another and then to the base, using the yarn and a canvas needle.
- Assemble the lid panel and its four shallow sides in the same way.
- Test the lid on the box before securing any final decorative stitches; it should slide over the body without forcing the canvas.
This is a yarn-stitched mesh construction, not a sewn-fabric box. The finished dimensions and carrying capacity depend on the canvas, stitch coverage and how the box is used. The tutorial supplies no load rating, moisture-resistance claim or comparative durability test, so use it for ordinary craft storage rather than assuming it protects heavy or valuable objects.

Choose the construction that fits your tools and finish
| Method | Structure and closure | Main tools | Published dimensions or estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic canvas | Rigid mesh panels stitched with yarn; separate fitted lid | Ruler, marker, scissors, canvas needle and yarn | Custom-sized; base follows contents, lid is one canvas row larger on each side; lid sides about 1–2 inches deep |
| Sewn fabric cube (Hobbycraft) | Outer and inner fabric with interfacing; soft cube construction | Sewing machine, thread, pins, fabric scissors, tape measure, fabric pen and iron | Small: 13.5 cm square base with 13.5 × 19 cm panels; medium: 16 cm base with 16 × 22 cm panels; large: 21 cm base with 21 × 27 cm panels. Hobbycraft estimates one hour and £10–30. |
| Paper-covered cardboard (Bostik) | Reused sturdy box, such as a shoe box, covered with wrapping paper; removable lid | Wrapping paper, adhesive, scissors and a ruler | Cut paper with extra material for folding over every edge; no universal box size is given |
| Fabric-wrapped file box (HGTV) | Cardboard file box covered inside and out; rope handles through grommets | Ruler, pen, scissors, spray adhesive, hot-glue gun and sticks, craft knife, grommets and rope | One 21 × 24 inch fabric piece is specified for that project’s box top; it is not a universal cutting measurement |
Alternative 1: sew a fabric storage cube
Hobbycraft’s beginner project uses matching outer and inner fabric layers, interfacing, elastic, thread, pins, a sewing machine and an iron. Cut the interfacing 1 cm smaller than each corresponding fabric piece to preserve the seam allowance. The large version also receives interfacing on the outer fabric.
Published cutting sizes
| Size | Square base | Four side panels (outer and inner) |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 13.5 cm × 13.5 cm | 13.5 cm × 19 cm each |
| Medium | 16 cm × 16 cm | 16 cm × 22 cm each |
| Large | 21 cm × 21 cm | 21 cm × 27 cm each |
Those are the project’s example dimensions, not a guarantee that every fabric weight or seam allowance will produce the same finished capacity. Hobbycraft labels the project beginner level and estimates one hour and £10–30; costs and time vary by location, materials and equipment.

Alternative 2: cover a cardboard or shoe box with paper
Bostik’s approach reuses a sturdy cardboard box, with a shoe box specifically suggested. Measure wrapping paper with enough excess to fold over the box edges. Cut the paper, glue the base and sides, fold the excess inside, and repeat the process for the lid. Foam shapes or stickers can add decoration.
Paper covering is the quickest route when you already have a suitable box and do not need to sew or cut plastic canvas. Ordinary cardboard is not archival storage material, however, and the method has no stated load, moisture or longevity rating.

Alternative 3: wrap a file box and add rope handles
HGTV’s fabric-bin method starts with a cardboard file box. Solid fabric lines the interior while patterned fabric covers the outside. Spray adhesive holds broad areas, and hot glue secures edges. After making holes and installing four grommets, thread rope to form handles.
The project lists one 21 × 24 inch fabric piece for its particular box top. Treat that as a project-specific measurement: measure your own file box before cutting. A craft knife and hot glue require deliberate handling; hot glue can cause severe burns.

Size the box around its contents
For everyday craft supplies
- Lay out the supplies in the arrangement you expect to store.
- Add a little clearance on every side so items can be removed without snagging.
- Choose wall height from the tallest item, then add room for new supplies if the box will grow.
- Check the finished footprint against the shelf, drawer or cubby before cutting.
For a rigid paperboard container
The Western Australian Museum’s conservation guidance recommends measuring the object, allowing extra clearance and padding, drawing a template, and orienting the longest box dimension with the corrugations because board is strongest in that direction. That advice concerns acid-free board and collection storage; it does not make ordinary craft cardboard archival or suitable for protecting valuable objects.

Safety and handling
- Use scissors and craft knives on a stable surface. Bostik advises adult supervision when children use scissors.
- Use a hot-glue gun only with appropriate supervision and a heat-safe work area; the Western Australian Museum warns that hot glue can cause severe burns.
- Keep adhesives and loose small components away from children and pets while assembling.
- Do not stack heavy items in a box unless the materials and construction have been independently tested for that load.
Which method should you use?
- Choose plastic canvas when you want a custom footprint, visible stitchery and a fitted lid without a sewing machine.
- Choose the sewn cube when you have fabric, an iron and a sewing machine and want a softer, washable-looking organizer.
- Choose paper-covered cardboard when speed, reuse and minimal tools matter most.
- Choose the wrapped file box when you need a larger office-style container with rope handles and already have the adhesive tools.
