Remove couch hair in this order: check the upholstery care code, vacuum slowly with an upholstery attachment, loosen hair trapped in the fabric with a clean rubber glove or brush, then use a lint roller for the last small patches. Keep the process dry unless the label permits moisture, and stop if the fabric snags, pills, changes nap, or leaves residue.
1. Check the upholstery care label
Look beneath a cushion or along the sofa frame for the manufacturer’s cleaning code. The code determines which methods are safe:

If there is no label or the instructions are unclear, begin with dry, gentle methods and test any tool in a hidden area. Delicate upholstery deserves the same caution even when its code permits water.
2. Prepare the couch for vacuuming
- Remove cushions, pillows and throws. Shake washable covers outside if their care labels permit it.
- Pick up toys, blankets and other objects that could obstruct the nozzle.
- Set the vacuum to a suitable upholstery or low-suction setting if available. A brush roll that can be switched off is preferable for delicate cloth.
- Work in good light so hair in seams and under cushions is visible.
3. Vacuum loose hair slowly
Fit the upholstery attachment and make slow, overlapping passes rather than sweeping quickly over the surface. Cover the top, front and sides of every cushion, then vacuum the seat deck, back, arms, undersides and the fabric around the frame. Use a crevice tool in cushion gaps, piping, folds and seams where fur collects. Empty the canister or replace the bag when airflow drops; reduced suction leaves hair behind.

4. Lift hair embedded in the weave
Rubber glove
Put on a clean, dry rubber glove. Drag your hand in one direction over a small section, using light pressure. Static and friction gather trapped fur into rolls or clumps. Pick up each clump and vacuum it before moving to the next section.
Rubber brush
On durable upholstery, a rubber pet-hair brush can do the same job over larger areas. Use short strokes and clean the brush frequently. Do not force it through loose, worn or highly textured fibers.

Dry microfiber for smooth surfaces
For leather and other smooth, nonfabric areas, wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, then vacuum seams. The cloth can collect surface hair without introducing moisture.
5. Finish with targeted touch-ups
Use a lint roller or reusable pet-hair roller on small remaining patches such as cushion tops, arm fronts, piping and exposed seams. Rollers are a finishing tool, not a substitute for vacuuming an entire sofa. Test adhesive products in an inconspicuous spot first, especially on velvet, chenille, bouclé, loose weaves and worn fabric.

Material-specific precautions
Leather
Hair generally stays on leather’s surface. Wipe it with dry microfiber and vacuum stitching, piping and creases. Follow the leather maker’s care instructions before applying any conditioner or cleaner.
Microfiber and textured woven fabric
These materials can hold hair through static and their texture. Use dry vacuuming followed by a light rubber-glove pass. Avoid saturating them or scrubbing one spot repeatedly.

Velvet, chenille, bouclé and loose weaves
Use the least aggressive method that works. Keep suction, rubber tools and rollers light and directional. Stop immediately if threads pull, the nap changes direction or the surface becomes shiny.
Worn or damaged upholstery
Existing thinning and fraying make snagging more likely. Skip stiff brushes and strong adhesive rollers; rely on carefully tested vacuuming or ask the manufacturer or an upholstery professional for advice.

When hair removal is no longer the real problem
Increasingly forceful brushing will not solve stains, urine, odor, dander buildup or grime embedded with the fur. For those problems, use a fabric-appropriate deep-cleaning method or hire a professional upholstery cleaner. Tell the cleaner the fabric code and identify any pet-related stains before treatment. Do not apply water or solvent to upholstery marked X, and do not use a method prohibited by an S label.

Keep pet hair from rebuilding
- Vacuum the sofa and its seams regularly rather than waiting for a visible layer of fur.
- Groom the pet on a routine appropriate to its coat, preferably away from the couch.
- Place washable throws or covers on favorite resting spots and launder them according to their care labels.
