Silentnight Studio Original review: a foam mattress with added bounce

The Silentnight Studio Original is a medium, 26cm all-foam mattress that feels bouncier than typical memory foam. Here is how its Geltex layer affects comfort, cooling, pressure relief, heavier sleepers and setup.

Yes—the Silentnight Studio Original is noticeably springier than typical slow-response memory foam. Its 3cm Geltex comfort layer sits above 4cm of memory foam and a dense Studio Flex foam core, creating a medium feel with easier movement and useful joint pressure relief. It is still an all-foam, 26cm mattress rather than a pocket-spring hybrid, and its 60-night trial and five-year guarantee are relatively short.

What is the Silentnight Studio Original like?

The Studio Original is a 26cm-deep, all-foam mattress available in single, double and king sizes. Silentnight and T3 describe its comfort as medium. T3’s reviewer estimates the feel at approximately 6/10 firmness; that is an editorial assessment, not a manufacturer rating.

The main distinction is response. The Geltex layer gives the surface more buoyancy than dense, slow-sinking memory foam, while the memory-foam layer still allows the body to settle enough for pressure relief. T3 reported that it felt more buoyant than the other foam mattresses tested while remaining effective around the joints.

In practical terms, it feels closer to responsive foam than to a traditional spring mattress: you get some push-back when changing position, but not the pronounced edge-to-edge bounce of an innerspring design.

How the layers create the bounce

Layer or feature What is specified What it means in use
Comfort layer 3cm exclusive Geltex Provides the springier, more mobile response and is described as helping prevent overheating.
Pressure-relief layer 4cm premium memory foam Allows contouring around shoulders, hips and other pressure points.
Support core Dense Studio Flex foam Supplies the main structural support beneath the comfort layers.
Cover Removable, washable cover with Purotex anti-allergenic fabric approved by Allergy UK Adds a practical hygiene and allergy-management feature.
Overall depth 26cm Check that your fitted sheets and bed frame accommodate this depth.

Geltex is intended to improve airflow and reduce the stuffy sensation sometimes associated with memory foam. That does not make the Studio Original a cool-sleeping pocket-spring mattress: the support system remains foam, so heat sensitivity should be judged against other foam models as well as hybrids.

Is it good for pressure relief?

T3 found the mattress effective at relieving pressure around the joints. The combination of conforming memory foam and a more responsive Geltex surface may suit sleepers who want cushioning without feeling trapped in a deep, slow-moving cradle.

People who change position frequently may find the added buoyancy easier to work with than very dense memory foam. Conversely, anyone seeking a firm, highly supportive or strongly springy feel should compare it with a firmer mattress or a true pocket-spring hybrid.

Who should—and should not—buy it?

Potentially suitable for

  • Sleepers who like memory-foam pressure relief but want less sink and easier movement.
  • Couples or individuals looking for a medium comfort level rather than a very soft or very firm surface.
  • People who value a removable cover and Purotex anti-allergenic treatment.
  • Foam-mattress shoppers concerned about overheating but not specifically seeking springs.

Reasons to be cautious

  • T3 warns that it is not ideal for heavier people; heavier sleepers should look for independently stated weight limits, stronger support specifications or a model designed for higher loads.
  • The approximately 6/10 firmness estimate is only a reviewer’s guide, and perceived firmness varies with body weight, sleeping position and bed base.
  • Those wanting pronounced bounce, reinforced edge support or the airflow of a coil system may prefer a pocket-spring hybrid.
  • The 60-night trial and five-year guarantee are shorter than many competing offers in T3’s comparison.

Trial, guarantee and what to check before ordering

Silentnight specifies a 60-night comfort trial, with claims made through the retailer, and T3 lists a five-year guarantee. Guarantee eligibility requires proof of purchase from an authorised UK or Republic of Ireland retailer, a suitable supportive base and compliance with the care instructions.

Unboxing and first-night setup

Silentnight’s official booklet says Studio mattresses are rolled for delivery. Follow this sequence:

  1. Keep the mattress rolled until it is in the bedroom.
  2. Place it on the bed base before opening the packaging.
  3. Cut away the plastic carefully so the cover and foam are not damaged.
  4. Unroll the mattress flat on the bed.
  5. Leave it uncovered for a few hours in a well-ventilated room so condensation can escape.
  6. Allow 24 hours for the mattress to settle before judging its final shape and comfort.

Do not bend or re-roll the mattress. A temporary new-product smell can be reduced by ventilation; avoid chemical cleaners or detergents, which Silentnight warns may damage the fabric and stitching.

Care instructions

The Studio Original is single-sided: use only the designated top sleeping surface. Rotate it top-to-toe weekly for the first two or three months, then monthly. It should be rotated, not flipped.

There is conflicting-sounding product language around the cover, so follow the official booklet for care: it says not to remove or machine-wash the cover. Silentnight recommends fitting a breathable mattress protector from new. Use a supportive, suitable base and keep the mattress dry and well ventilated.

How it compares with the feel of other mattress types

Question Studio Original What to look for in an alternative
Bounce versus sink More buoyant than the foam mattresses T3 tested, with some memory-foam contouring Choose coils or a hybrid for stronger bounce; choose denser memory foam for a slower, deeper sink.
Pressure relief T3 reported effective joint pressure relief Compare comfort-layer thickness, firmness and independent testing.
Heat management Geltex is designed to help prevent overheating, but the mattress is still all foam Look for coil airflow or verified cooling materials if heat is a major concern.
Firmness Medium; T3 estimate approximately 6/10 Check the maker’s firmness scale and account for body weight and sleeping position.
Trial and guarantee 60 nights; five years Some competitors offer longer periods, so compare the exact terms rather than headline numbers.
Heavier-sleeper suitability T3 advises caution Seek explicit weight guidance and a support design intended for higher loads.

Verdict

The Silentnight Studio Original is a sensible choice if you want memory-foam pressure relief with a livelier, less stuck-in feel. Its Geltex-over-memory-foam construction addresses mobility and heat concerns better than basic slow-response foam, while the washable-style cover specification and Purotex treatment add everyday practicality. The trade-offs are its all-foam construction, caution for heavier sleepers, and shorter-than-many trial and guarantee periods. Buy only after confirming the current retailer terms and ensuring your base and bedding suit a 26cm, single-sided mattress.
