For the most control over soaking, choose the Whirlpool WTW5100HW. It is a 4.8 cu. ft. top-loader with a built-in faucet, pretreat brush and selectable 15-, 30-, 60- or 120-minute soak periods. The Whirlpool WTW4950HW is a simpler 3.9 cu. ft. alternative with dedicated soaking cycles, while the 4.6 cu. ft. GE GTW725BPNDG adds Auto Soak to Oxi sanitizing and stain-pretreat features.
“Soak,” “Presoak,” “Auto Soak” and “Pre Wash” are not interchangeable labels. Understanding what each option actually does—and when it is available on a cycle—matters more than the wording on the control panel.
What a washing-machine soak function does
A soak stage holds garments in water and detergent before the main wash. The extra contact time can loosen embedded soil so the subsequent agitation or tumbling can remove it more effectively. Whirlpool describes PRESOAK as an added period intended to loosen tough stains and recommends using the warmest water permitted by the garment-care label.
Soaking is a treatment step, not a guarantee of stain removal. Results depend on the stain, fabric, detergent, temperature, mechanical action and how quickly the item is treated. Manufacturer documentation reviewed for these models does not publish an independent, cross-brand stain-removal percentage attributable specifically to soaking.

Soak, Presoak, Auto Soak and Pre Wash: the important differences
Soak or Presoak
A manually selected soak normally pauses the load in water and detergent for a defined period before the wash continues. Whirlpool’s PRESOAK option is an example: it adds an extra soak period to a cycle. On the WTW5100HW, the shopper can choose 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutes.
Auto Soak
Auto Soak is an automatic program or stage controlled by the washer. GE uses this name on the GTW725BPNDG. The exact duration and cycle availability are model-specific, so consult the owner’s manual rather than assuming it matches a selectable timed soak.
Pre Wash
Pre Wash is a separate preliminary wash stage. It may use a short wash and drain rather than holding the load for an extended period. LG’s guidance treats Soak and Pre Wash as different options, even when both are intended for heavily soiled laundry.

Whirlpool WTW5100HW: best for adjustable soaking
The WTW5100HW is the closest match for a buyer whose primary requirement is control over soak time. Its four settings let you use a short hold for a fresh food spill or a longer period for ground-in soil, while the built-in faucet and brush allow treatment before the load starts. At 4.8 cu. ft., it also provides the largest stated capacity of the three models.

A long soak is not appropriate for every dye, finish or delicate fabric.
Whirlpool WTW4950HW: best simple soak-and-wash option
The WTW4950HW offers a 3.9 cu. ft. drum and explicitly lists soaking cycles, including a soak-and-wash option. It is a sensible choice when you want a conventional top-loader with a clear soaking workflow rather than additional smart or specialty controls. Its smaller stated capacity may suit a couple or a household that usually runs moderate loads, but compare your typical laundry volume with the manufacturer’s loading guidance.

GE GTW725BPNDG: best for soaking plus sanitizer features
GE’s GTW725BPNDG combines a 4.6 cu. ft. capacity with Auto Soak, Oxi sanitizing and stain-pretreat capabilities. It is a strong candidate when soaking is one part of a broader stain-care routine. Because Auto Soak is automatic rather than a published set of selectable times, verify how the option behaves on the cycles you use most often.

1. Confirm whether timing is selectable
Some controls offer exact durations; others start a preset automatic stage. If you regularly treat different stains, selectable times such as the WTW5100HW’s 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes provide more flexibility.

Soak may not be available on every program. LG warns, for the referenced top-load models, that Soak is unavailable in Quick, Hand/Wool and Pre-wash+Normal. Read the manual for the exact model and confirm compatibility with bedding, colors, whites and other cycles you expect to use.

- [Separate Time Control & Lint Filter]Users can control washing time, washing mode and spinning time through the three control switches on the panel. There is two water inlets on the panel for connecting the hose to easily add water. With the simple control panel, this mini washer is easy to operate and you can get clean clothes in three steps.
- [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
3. Look for practical pretreatment tools
A faucet, brush or dedicated additive dispenser can make it easier to wet and treat a collar, cuff or isolated stain before the full load runs. These tools can be more useful in daily laundry than a larger list of electronic options.
4. Match capacity to your loads
Compare the stated capacity with the size and frequency of your loads. An oversized machine can be wasteful for small loads, while an undersized one may encourage overloading or extra cycles.
5. Decide between top-load and front-load ergonomics
The three documented matches above are top-loaders. Top-loading access can simplify adding garments or pretreating at standing height, while front-loaders may offer different water and tumbling behavior. Choose based on reach, door clearance, stacking plans and the way you sort and transfer laundry.
6. Review temperature, water and fabric-care controls
Use the warmest water that the garment label permits, as Whirlpool advises, but do not assume a soak overrides fabric-care limits. Confirm available temperatures, detergent instructions and options for delicate materials.
7. Verify dimensions, service and installation locally
Before ordering, measure the complete delivery path and laundry alcove, including door swing and hose connections. Confirm local warranty coverage, authorized service, delivery terms and whether installation includes removal of the old appliance. Availability and retailer terms change by location and date.
Quick Recap
A reliable workflow for soaking stained laundry
- Read the care label. Identify the maximum temperature, bleaching restrictions and whether the item should be washed separately.
- Remove excess soil. Brush or rinse loose dirt without setting the stain deeper into the fibers.
- Apply compatible detergent or pretreatment. Follow the washer manual and product directions; do not combine chemicals unless the labels specifically allow it.
- Load without packing the drum. Leave room for water and mechanical action to reach every item.
- Select the soak option and an appropriate duration. Use the model’s stated setting—such as 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutes on the WTW5100HW—or the automatic setting on a machine such as the GE GTW725BPNDG.
- Choose a safe temperature and the correct main cycle. The soak does not replace selecting a cycle suitable for the fabric.
- Inspect before drying. If a stain remains, repeat an appropriate treatment rather than applying heat, which can set some stains permanently.
Common buying and usage mistakes
- Assuming Pre Wash equals Soak: Pre Wash is a separate preliminary wash stage and may not provide a prolonged hold.
- Assuming every cycle permits soaking: Availability can be restricted, especially on quick or delicate programs.
- Using maximum time or heat for every load: Fabric labels and dye stability should determine the setting.
- Overlooking pretreatment access: A built-in faucet or brush can matter more than a rarely used specialty mode.
- Buying by capacity alone: Installation space, service access and cycle compatibility affect everyday usefulness.
Which model should you choose?
- Choose the Whirlpool WTW5100HW if adjustable soak duration and built-in pretreatment are your priorities.
- Choose the Whirlpool WTW4950HW if you want a simpler, dedicated soak-and-wash approach and its 3.9 cu. ft. capacity fits your household.
- Choose the GE GTW725BPNDG if Auto Soak plus Oxi sanitizing and stain-pretreat functions best matches your routine.
