Yes, many modern heated blankets can go in the washing machine, but only if the care label or owner’s manual says the blanket is washable. The safe method is controlled: unplug it, remove every cord and controller, inspect it for damage, wash briefly in cold water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, dry on low or air-only if allowed, and do not plug it back in until the blanket and connector ports are completely dry.
That last point matters. A heated blanket is not just bedding. It is a fabric item with embedded electrical wiring, connector housings, insulation, and a controller. On our job sites, we treat anything with a cord as both a comfort item and a fire-risk item. The wash day is a good time to check for frayed cords, scorch marks, loose plugs, brittle insulation, hot connectors, and worn fabric.
If the blanket is older, has no readable care label, smells hot when used, buzzes at the controller, has exposed wiring, or shows charred spots, do not wash it and hope for the best. Replace it. A $60 to $150 queen heated blanket is cheaper than gambling with damaged electrical equipment in a bedroom.
Before You Wash: Decide Whether to Wash, Spot-Clean, or Replace
Start with the care label and manual. If the label says machine washable, you can usually wash it with the gentle method below. If it says hand wash only, keep it out of the washer. If it says do not wash, or the label is gone and you cannot confirm the model instructions, spot-clean only or replace the blanket.

Wash it if
- The care label or manual says the blanket is washable.
- The controller and power cord detach fully from the blanket.
- The fabric has no scorch marks, worn-through areas, or exposed wiring.
- The connector housing is tight, clean, and not cracked.
- The blanket heats normally with no odor, buzzing, flickering controller, or overheating plug.
Spot-clean it if
- The label allows spot cleaning but not machine washing.
- The blanket is lightly soiled in one area.
- You cannot use a washer large enough for the blanket to move freely.
- The blanket is older but still in good electrical condition and you want to avoid stress on the internal wires.
Replace it if
- The cord is cracked, frayed, pinched, brittle, or loose at the plug.
- The controller buzzes, smells hot, flickers, or gets unusually warm.
- You see dark spots, charred areas, melted fabric, poking wires, or lumps along the wiring path.
- The blanket has been folded tightly under weight for a long time and the wires feel kinked.
- The care label is missing and you cannot identify the model instructions.
Safety organizations consistently advise replacing damaged electric bedding instead of repairing it. Homeowner repair of heated-blanket wiring is not a good DIY project. The insulation, connectors, resistance wiring, and controller are designed as a system. A splice or patch that looks acceptable can still overheat under bedding.
Tools and Supplies You Need
Keep the setup simple. Aggressive cleaners and high heat are what usually cause trouble.
- Owner’s manual or readable care label for the exact model
- Mild liquid laundry detergent
- Cold water
- Large-capacity washer, preferably front-loading or a top-loader without a harsh central agitator
- Bathtub, utility sink, or large basin for hand washing
- Clean towels for pressing out water
- Drying rack, clothesline, or two parallel lines to support the wet blanket
- Low-heat or air-only dryer setting, only if the label allows machine drying
Avoid bleach, fabric softener, oxygen boosters unless the manufacturer allows them, harsh stain removers, dry-cleaning solvents, steam, ironing, and high dryer heat. Dry cleaning is commonly discouraged because solvents can damage wire insulation and control components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore disconnecting anything, take a quick phone photo of the controller connection layout. Some blankets have two controllers or keyed connectors, and a photo makes reassembly simple after drying.
How to Wash a Heated Blanket in the Washing Machine
The washer method works best for washable modern blankets that have detachable controls. If you have a king-size or thick sherpa-style heated blanket, use a large-capacity machine. The blanket should have room to move without being packed tight. A crowded washer creates more twisting, and twisting is hard on embedded wiring.
1. Unplug and remove all electrical parts
Unplug the blanket from the wall first. Detach the controller, power cord, and any removable connector leads according to the manual. No controller, cord, plug, or wall adapter should ever go into the washer or dryer.
Look into the blanket’s connector ports. They should be dry, clean, and solidly seated in the fabric. If a connector housing is loose or cracked, stop and replace the blanket.
2. Inspect both sides of the blanket
Spread the blanket on a bed or clean floor. Run your hands along the wiring channels. You are looking for hard bends, lumps, broken-feeling sections, scorched fabric, thinning fabric, and places where the wire seems close to poking through.
Check the cord separately. A plug that feels loose, a cord jacket with cracks, or a controller that has been running hot is enough reason to retire the blanket. Washing will not make an electrical problem safer.
3. Spot-treat stains first
Use a small amount of mild liquid detergent and cold water on stains. Work gently with your fingers or a soft cloth. Do not scrub aggressively with a stiff brush. The goal is to loosen the stain so the full wash cycle can stay short.
4. Use cold water and a short gentle cycle
Select cold water, gentle or delicate cycle, low agitation, and low spin. If your washer allows a custom cycle, keep the active wash time short, around 2 to 5 minutes after a brief soak. Some manufacturer instructions call for a 15-minute cold-water presoak, a 2-minute delicate wash, cold rinse, and spin dry. Follow your blanket’s own label where it differs.
Use only a small dose of mild detergent. For a standard home washer, 1 to 2 tablespoons of concentrated liquid detergent is usually enough. More detergent means more rinsing, and more rinsing means more handling and more time with water in the connector areas.
5. Skip heavy-duty settings
Do not use normal heavy-duty, sanitary, steam, hot water, high-spin, bulky-bedding with aggressive tumbling, or deep-soak cycles unless your manufacturer specifically allows them. Heat and violent agitation can damage the heating wires or the insulation around them.
When the cycle ends, remove the blanket promptly. Do not let it sit wet and compressed in the washer for hours. Reshape it while damp so the internal wiring is not left kinked as it dries.
How to Hand Wash a Heated Blanket
Hand washing is slower, but it is often the gentler choice for older washable blankets, delicate fabrics, or blankets that barely fit in your machine. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes of active work plus several hours of drying time.

1. Fill a tub with cool water
Use a bathtub, utility sink, or large basin. Add mild liquid detergent and mix it into the water before adding the blanket. Use enough water for the blanket to move freely. For a throw or twin blanket, a utility sink may work. For a queen or king blanket, use a bathtub.
2. Soak briefly
Soak the blanket for about 10 to 15 minutes unless the care label says otherwise. Keep the controller and cord out of the room or well away from the tub so there is no chance they get wet.
3. Press, do not wring
Gently press the soapy water through the fabric. Do not twist, wring, knot, stomp, or scrub the blanket. Wringing can break or kink the internal heating wires.
4. Rinse thoroughly
Drain the soapy water and refill with cool clean water. Press the blanket gently to release detergent. Repeat until the rinse water is clear and the fabric no longer feels slippery.

5. Remove water with towels
Press water out by hand, then lay the blanket between clean towels and press again. The blanket will still be damp, but it should not be dripping heavily. Avoid hanging a soaking-wet king blanket from one narrow line because the wet weight can strain the fabric and wiring.
Drying a Heated Blanket Safely
Drying is where many people damage an otherwise washable heated blanket. The rule is simple: low heat or no heat, no pinching, no ironing, and no power until every part is dry.
Air drying is safest
Lay the blanket flat over a broad drying rack or drape it over two parallel clotheslines. Two lines distribute the weight better than one. If you use clothespins, place them on the outer fabric edge only, away from wiring runs and connector areas.
Reshape the blanket while damp. Smooth out bunching and make sure the connector area is exposed to airflow. Depending on blanket thickness and room conditions, air drying can take 6 to 24 hours. Thick fleece, sherpa, and king-size blankets may need a full day.
Dryer use depends on the label
If the manufacturer allows dryer use, choose low heat or air-only. A common safe approach is to tumble briefly, often 5 to 10 minutes, then remove the blanket while still damp and finish air drying. Do not use high heat, extended timed drying, sanitize, steam refresh, or wrinkle-release settings.
Never dry the controller or cord. Never iron or press the blanket. Heat concentrated in one spot can damage insulation around the internal wiring.
Wait before reconnecting
Do not plug in the blanket just because the outside feels dry. Check the connector ports, seams, hems, and thicker fabric areas. If there is any cool dampness, wait longer. A practical rule is to let the blanket air dry until it feels dry everywhere, then give it several more hours before reconnecting, especially in humid weather.
What It Costs in 2026
Washing a heated blanket is usually inexpensive. Replacement is the bigger cost, but replacement is the right call when electrical damage is present. As of May 2026, the U.S. all-sector average electricity revenue reported by EIA was 13.83 cents per kWh, with residential rates often higher and varying heavily by state. That means the washing cost itself is usually small compared with the safety decision.

Energy use is also modest. A heated blanket drawing 50 to 200 watts for 8 hours uses 0.4 to 1.6 kWh. At 13.83 cents per kWh, that is about $0.06 to $0.22 per 8-hour use before local residential-rate differences. The bigger issue is not the electric bill. It is whether the blanket is clean, dry, undamaged, and used correctly.

Most heated blanket cleaning is a DIY job. If the label allows washing and the blanket is in good shape, a homeowner can handle it with a gentle washer cycle or hand wash. You do not need a contractor, electrician, or appliance technician to launder a healthy washable blanket.
DIY when
- The care label is clear and allows the cleaning method.
- The blanket has no electrical warning signs.
- You have a washer large enough for the blanket to move without packing tight.
- You can air dry it fully before reuse.
Use a laundromat when
- The blanket is too bulky for your washer.
- You can choose a large front-loading machine with a gentle cold cycle.
- You can control dryer heat and finish drying at home if needed.
Use a professional cleaner only when
- The cleaner offers wet cleaning that matches the care label.
- The cleaner understands that the controller and cords must not be cleaned with the blanket.
- The process does not involve dry-cleaning solvents.
There is usually no permit issue for washing or replacing a heated blanket. The safety note is electrical use: plug the blanket directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Do not use it on a damaged outlet, loose receptacle, or circuit that already has signs of overheating. If the outlet faceplate is discolored, the plug fits loosely, or you smell heat at the receptacle, stop using that outlet and have it evaluated.

Common Mistakes That Damage Heated Blankets
The most expensive laundry mistakes are usually preventable. Avoid these:
- Putting the controller, cord, or plug in the washer or dryer.
- Assuming every heated blanket is washable.
- Using hot water, bleach, fabric softener, harsh stain remover, steam, or dry-cleaning solvents.
- Running a heavy-duty, sanitary, or high-spin cycle.
- Wringing or twisting the blanket by hand.
- Using high dryer heat or drying it completely in the machine.
- Plugging it in while the connector or fabric is still damp.
- Ironing, steaming, or pressing the blanket.
- Folding, tucking, or pinching the blanket while it is turned on.
- Using an extension cord or power strip.
- Keeping a blanket with scorch marks, exposed wires, buzzing controls, or an overheating connector.
Overwashing is another mistake. Unless there is a spill, pet accident, or direct skin contact, many heated blankets only need washing once or twice per season. Use a washable duvet cover or top sheet between you and the blanket if you want to reduce laundering.
How to Store a Heated Blanket After Washing
Storage affects safety. A clean, dry blanket can still be damaged by months of tight folding under heavy bins. Store it loosely rolled or lightly folded. Keep it in a dry closet, not a damp basement corner or hot attic where insulation can age faster.
If the manual allows it, detach the controller for storage. Put the controller and cord in a breathable bag next to the blanket so the parts stay together. Do not wrap the cord tightly around the controller. Use a loose coil about 8 to 10 inches across so the cord is not kinked.
Do not stack heavy tools, storage tubs, or luggage on top of the blanket. From a builder’s point of view, compression damage is easy to underestimate. Anything with embedded wiring should be stored like a flexible electrical device, not like a spare towel.

Before plugging the blanket back in, confirm four things. First, the fabric is completely dry. Second, the connector ports are dry. Third, the cord and controller are undamaged. Fourth, the blanket lies flat and is not folded, tucked, or pinched during use.
Run the blanket on a low setting for 10 to 15 minutes while you are awake and nearby. Feel around the connector and controller. Warm is normal for some controls, but hot, buzzing, odor, flickering, or uneven heating is not. If anything feels wrong, unplug it and replace the blanket.
A heated blanket should make a bed more comfortable, not add a hidden electrical problem to the room. Wash it gently, dry it patiently, store it loosely, and treat damage as a replacement issue instead of a repair project.
