The Groundfridge is a prefabricated underground cellar that keeps food and drinks cool through the surrounding earth, groundwater, shade and controlled solar ventilation rather than a compressor refrigerator. Its advertised internal volume is 7.8 m³ and its published temperature range is 10–12°C year-round, although actual performance depends on local ground temperature, groundwater, shade and planting.
What the Groundfridge is
Groundfridge is an excavated, insulated cool cellar delivered as a finished shell. The Original configuration includes shelving, a railing and solar-powered ventilation. The Empty configuration has a handrail but no shelving; its ventilation system can be specified with or without the system.

Weltevree describes it as “an excavable and autonomously functioning (cool) cellar.” The manufacturer also explains that it “uses the insulating effect of the ground and the cooling effect of the groundwater.”
The complete Original weighs approximately 560 kg. The Empty model is listed at about 450 kg. A separate storage system is available as a 21 mm birch-plywood cabinet.

How it stays cool without a refrigerator
Earth and groundwater
At roughly one metre below the surface, ground temperature has the greatest influence on the cellar climate. Surrounding soil moderates rapid outdoor temperature swings, while groundwater can provide additional cooling. These effects vary by site, so the 10–12°C figure is a published claim, not a guaranteed reading for every property.
Shade, planting and the soil mound
A shaded, preferably north-facing position reduces solar gain. Soil placed over the cellar forms an insulating mound; planting can add shade and evaporative cooling. The finished mound may be about 1.5 m high and 5 m in diameter.
Solar-powered ventilation
A supplied solar panel recharges the ventilation battery, so no mains cable is required. The system is intended to bring in cooler night air, and the interior LED is battery-operated. The insulated door limits heat transfer when the cellar is closed.
Space, dimensions and site requirements
| Specification | Published figure | What it means on site |
|---|---|---|
| Internal volume | 7.8 m³ | Usable capacity for produce, preserves and drinks; shelving layout affects how efficiently it is organised. |
| Installed length and width | Approximately 375 cm × 233 cm | Allow room for the structure, excavation access and the surrounding mound. |
| Internal diameter | 225 cm | Plan circulation and door access around a roughly 2.25 m-wide interior. |
| Excavation | About 2 m deep and 5 m diameter | Check underground services, access for machinery, spoil storage and drainage before ordering. |
| Working area | Approximately 25 m² | Groundfridge’s installation guidance uses this as the approximate site requirement. |
What installation involves
- Select the location. Choose a shaded, preferably north-facing area and confirm that an excavator can reach it. Check local ground conditions, groundwater, underground utilities, boundaries and access rights.
- Confirm permissions. The manufacturer says a permit is probably not needed, but instructs buyers to check with their local council. Buyers outside Europe are responsible for local compliance.
- Excavate. Prepare an opening approximately 2 m deep and 5 m in diameter. Groundfridge recommends an 8-ton excavator for the excavation and lifting operation.
- Prepare the base. Place a thin layer of white sand as specified in the installation guidance.
- Lower the cellar. Use the built-in lifting eyes to lower the approximately 560 kg Original into position with the excavator. The Empty model is lighter at about 450 kg.
- Backfill and form the mound. Reuse excavated soil around and over the shell, creating the insulating mound. Shape and plant it only after the structure, door and ventilation are secure.
- Commission ventilation and storage. Install the solar panel, check battery operation and fit the supplied shelves or a separately purchased storage cabinet.
Transport and installation are not included in the product price. Logistics and installation are arranged with external providers, so obtain site-specific quotations before committing to the purchase.

| Feature | Original | Empty |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate listed weight | 560 kg | 450 kg |
| Shelving | Included | Not included |
| Handrail | Included | Included |
| Ventilation | Solar-powered ventilation included | Selectable with or without the system |
| Interior alternative | Supplied shelving | Separate 21 mm birch-plywood storage system available |
Choose the Original when ready-to-use shelving and ventilation are important. Empty offers a lower equipment level and more freedom to configure the interior, but shelving and possibly ventilation must be budgeted separately.
Cost and purchase caveats
Prices are shown in reservation and full-payment variants and can change. At the time captured, the collection listing showed the Original from a €250 reservation deposit to €17,990 for the full product, and the Empty from €250 to €14,990. These figures exclude transport and installation and should be rechecked with Groundfridge or Weltevree before ordering.
The product sheet states a two-year warranty. Confirm the current warranty terms, delivery scope, unloading arrangements and installer responsibilities in the written quotation.

Groundfridge makes the most sense when you want substantial, refrigerator-free storage and have a suitable garden, machinery access and budget for excavation. Its 7.8 m³ volume is far greater than a domestic refrigerator, while solar ventilation avoids a permanent mains connection.

Local soil temperature, groundwater, shade and mound planting influence the result, and installation requires a large excavation and heavy lifting equipment. It is not a plug-in appliance that can be moved after delivery.
Groundfridge compared with other storage choices
| Factor | Groundfridge | Conventional refrigerator | Wine cellar | Site-built root cellar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up-front product cost | High; listed product prices exclude delivery and installation | Usually lower purchase cost | Varies by room and equipment | Varies widely with design and construction |
| Excavation and lifting | About 2 m excavation; 8-ton excavator recommended | None beyond delivery | Depends on existing room | Usually substantial earthworks |
| Usable volume | 7.8 m³ | Much smaller | Depends on room size | Depends on design |
| Temperature stability | Published 10–12°C; site-dependent | Machine-controlled set point | Designed for wine; equipment and insulation vary | Depends on depth, drainage, insulation and climate |
| Electrical demand | Solar battery ventilation; no mains cable required | Continuous mains power | Usually powered equipment | Depends on whether mechanical cooling or ventilation is added |
| Interior flexibility | Original shelving, or configure Empty separately | Fixed appliance layout | Depends on fit-out | Fully customisable |
| Permits and responsibility | Check with the local council; overseas buyers handle local compliance | Generally appliance delivery | Depends on building work | Typically owner and contractor responsibility |
Before you order: a practical checklist
- Measure a clear installation area of roughly 25 m² and plan for a mound approximately 5 m in diameter.
- Verify excavator access, lifting clearance and a safe route for the 560 kg Original, or 450 kg Empty.
- Locate buried utilities and assess groundwater, drainage and soil stability.
- Confirm the 10–12°C expectation against your local climate; ask the installer how site conditions may affect it.
- Decide whether you need the Original’s shelves and included ventilation or prefer the Empty configuration.
- Price transport, excavation, lifting, backfilling, planting and any storage system separately.
- Obtain council advice and a written quotation covering delivery, installation, warranty and commissioning.
The Bottom Line
Groundfridge is a serious, high-capacity alternative to a refrigerator or custom root cellar when your site can accommodate a two-metre excavation and heavy installation equipment. Its low-energy cooling is credible but site-dependent, so the purchase is worthwhile only after local ground conditions, access, permissions and the complete installed cost have been verified.
