To do laundry safely, read every care label, empty and prepare garments, sort a compatible load, pretreat stains, add the right amount of detergent, choose the label-approved cycle and temperature, inspect clothes before drying, then dry and put them away promptly. If a stain remains, do not apply dryer heat: drying can permanently set it.
What you need before starting
- Laundry detergent suitable for your washer and the load
- A hamper or basket for transport and sorting
- Prewash stain remover or detergent for spots
- A washer and dryer, or a safe air-drying setup
- Mesh laundry bags for items that need extra protection (optional)
Keep hand-wash and dry-clean-only garments separate from machine laundry. Do not put an item in a washer or dryer unless its care instructions allow that method.
1. Read the care label and prepare each item
Start with the label, not the machine. In general, textile wearing-apparel labels must provide either a washing instruction or a dry-cleaning instruction. Follow the most restrictive instruction when a load contains garments with different requirements.
Common care-label wording
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Hand wash | Manually remove soil with water and detergent or soap, using gentle squeezing rather than a machine wash. |
| Cold | Tap-cold water up to 85°F (29°C). |
| Warm | 90–110°F (32–43°C) for hand washing. |
| Delicate cycle | Slow agitation and reduced washing time. |
| Tumble dry | Dry in a machine dryer. |
| Low | Use low dryer heat. |
| No heat | Run the dryer without heat. |
| Remove promptly | Take items out when dry to help prevent wrinkling. |
Before washing, empty all pockets, close zippers and fasten buttons or hooks. Turn garments inside out when the label or garment construction makes that useful, and check for items that should go into a mesh bag.

2. Sort a load that can be washed together
Sorting is more than separating light and dark colors. Group items with compatible colors, fabrics, weights, soil levels, temperatures and cycles. A practical first sort is whites, lights, brights and darks; then divide each group when its care instructions or fabric weight differ.
| Load decision | Keep together when | Separate when |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Colors are similar and unlikely to transfer. | A new, very dark or brightly dyed item could bleed onto lighter pieces. |
| Fabric and weight | Items tolerate the same agitation and drying method. | Heavy denim or towels could abrade or overload lightweight garments. |
| Soil level | Items need the same wash intensity. | Heavily soiled pieces need a different cycle or pretreatment. |
| Temperature and cycle | All labels allow the selected settings. | One item requires cold, delicate, hand washing or another special treatment. |
Leave out anything marked hand wash or dry clean only. For delicate items that are machine-washable, a mesh bag can reduce tangling and contact with other garments; it does not override the label’s cycle or temperature requirement.

3. Pretreat stains before washing
Identify the stain when possible, then apply a suitable prewash stain remover or detergent according to that product’s directions. If the directions call for it, test the product on an inconspicuous area first.
- Remove excess material gently without spreading the stain.
- Apply the recommended pretreatment to the affected area.
- Allow the product to work only for the time stated on its label.
- Wash using the garment’s permitted cycle and temperature.
Do not dry the garment while the stain is still visible. Dryer heat can permanently set stains. If the mark remains after washing, repeat pretreatment and washing rather than moving to the dryer.

4. Add detergent and choose the wash settings
Measure detergent using the amount specified for the product, load size and machine. More detergent is not automatically better; use the product’s dosing guidance and your washer manual.
Choose the water temperature
- Cold: Use when the label permits it. Cold water can help reduce shrinkage and pilling in many garments.
- Warm: Use only when the label and washer permit it. Warm water can help with some temperature-dependent soils.
The care label controls the safe choice. When one load contains items with conflicting temperature requirements, split the load instead of using a setting that is too hot for the most delicate item.

Choose the cycle
Select the cycle named or indicated by the care label and washer manual. A delicate cycle uses slower agitation and less time than a standard cycle, but a garment marked hand wash still requires manual washing unless the label specifically provides another approved method.

When the wash ends, inspect garments in good light. Look especially at areas that were pretreated. A remaining stain is a reason to repeat treatment and washing, not to continue to the dryer.

6. Dry according to the label
Use the care label’s drying instruction rather than choosing heat by habit. Options may include tumble drying at a specified heat, permanent-press drying, no-heat drying or air drying.
| Drying choice | Use it when | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Tumble dry | The label permits machine drying. | Use the specified heat level; do not assume every tumble-dry item tolerates high heat. |
| Low heat | The label says low. | Keep the dryer at its low-heat setting. |
| No heat | The label says no heat. | The dryer runs without heat. |
| Air dry | The label requires or permits air drying. | Use a setup that supports the garment without distorting it. |
| Remove promptly | The label includes this instruction. | Take items out as soon as they are dry to limit wrinkles. |
Air drying may help preserve the form of dress shirts, denim and wool. Over-drying can contribute to shrinkage, so use the permitted setting and remove items promptly when instructed. Do not substitute air drying for a label that requires another method, or machine drying for a garment that must be air-dried.
7. Fold and store clean laundry
Fold clean laundry promptly and put it away neatly. Prompt handling helps keep clothes fresh and reduces wrinkles. Store garments in a dry, clean place suited to their shape and fabric; return special-care items to the method specified on their labels.
