Best default choice: the Anker 351 is the leading overall pick in Tom’s Guide’s February 24, 2026 comparison, but its published outlet count is contradictory (12 in the specifications table versus 15 in the article text). Verify the exact model and current manufacturer documentation before buying. For a fully documented conventional strip, the Belkin BE106000 is the safer recommendation: six outlets, 1,080 joules, UL 1449 certification, a 330V clamping figure, and a published connected-equipment warranty.
This guide covers U.S. 120V plug-in devices. A surge protector can reduce risk from transient voltage spikes; it cannot guarantee protection from lightning, sustained overvoltage, wiring faults, or outages.

It is a sensible default only for ordinary 120V desk, office, or charging loads. It is not a UPS, and a large equipment-protection dollar figure is not a measurement of suppression performance.
Best documented conventional strip: Belkin BE106000
The Belkin BE106000 has six surge-protected outlets, a six-foot heavy-duty cord, 1,080 joules, UL 1449 certification, a published 330V clamping voltage, up to 43dB EMI/RFI filtration, and a rotating plug. Belkin lists a lifetime product warranty and $15,000 connected-equipment coverage. It suits a small desk, TV, or office setup where documented specifications and support matter more than outlet count or USB charging.

Best for a TV or home-theater stack: ECHOGEAR ShockBlocker 8
Tom’s Guide reports eight outlets, 3,420 joules, EMI/RFI filtering, a five-year warranty, and $25,000 in connected-equipment coverage. Confirm those details and the current certification with ECHOGEAR. Check that the outlet spacing accommodates oversized TV, receiver, and console adapters. A power-only strip will not protect coaxial, Ethernet, or other conductive paths unless the specific product includes compatible data-line protection.
Best compact or travel choices
The One Beat six-outlet and Tessan Flat Plug models are aimed at nightstands, dorm rooms, hotel rooms, and temporary workspaces. Their reported 900-joule ratings and smaller layouts trade capacity and support for portability. Verify certification, warranty terms, and the exact plug design before using one outside the U.S.; outlet and voltage standards differ internationally.
Power strip versus surge protector
A power strip only adds receptacles unless it also contains a surge-protective device. Belkin explains that ordinary strips do not have a joule rating, while surge protectors use components such as metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) and publish an energy rating: Belkin’s comparison.
- Look for a stated joule rating.
- Look for a recognized safety mark and the exact model number.
- Prefer a protection or grounding indicator and, where appropriate, automatic shutdown or thermal protection.
- Verify the model in the manufacturer’s documentation or a certification database.
UL describes a surge protector as a device that limits voltage supplied to equipment by blocking or diverting unwanted voltage above a safe threshold: UL’s explanation.

How to interpret the specifications
Joule rating
Joules describe the rated energy a protector can absorb. A higher figure can indicate greater capacity, but it does not establish superior construction, lower let-through voltage, or better failure behavior. Tom’s Guide generally targets 2,000 joules or more for mainstream electronics; that is its editorial guidance, not a universal safety threshold.
Clamping, let-through, and VPR figures
Lower voltage protection generally means less excess voltage passes under the relevant test. Compare only figures produced under the same standard and method. Belkin lists 330V clamping voltage for the BE106000, while Eaton lists a 500V UL 1449 let-through rating for the TLP606B. Those numbers are not automatically a laboratory head-to-head comparison: Belkin BE106000 specifications and Eaton TLP606B specifications.
Protection modes and failure behavior
Check whether protection covers hot-neutral, hot-ground, and neutral-ground paths. MOVs can degrade after major events, and a unit may continue delivering power after its protective parts are exhausted. A status light is therefore functional information, not decoration. Automatic disconnection or a thermal fuse can prevent a failed protector from remaining energized, but confirm that behavior in the model’s documentation.
Certification
For U.S. cord-connected surge protective devices, UL identifies UL 1449 as the relevant standard. Use precise language such as “UL Listed” or “UL Certified,” not the vague phrase “UL approved.” Verify the exact manufacturer and model in UL Product iQ, which UL says is updated daily: UL 1449 guidance and UL Product iQ information.

USB charging
USB ports are a convenience feature separate from AC surge suppression. Compare USB-A versus USB-C, total wattage, USB Power Delivery support, whether output is shared, and whether ports remain powered when the AC switch is off. Port count alone does not indicate charging speed; a dedicated certified USB-C charger may be better for laptops and phones.
Layout, cord, and overload protection
Count usable outlets after bulky adapters are installed, not just the printed count. Check cord length, plug orientation, mounting holes, housing stability, breaker or reset mechanism, and the 15A/120V circuit limit. A strip cannot safely turn one receptacle into a supply for multiple heating appliances.

Gaming PC or workstation
Use a certified surge protector when you need transient protection only. Choose a UPS when you need time to save work, automatic computer or NAS shutdown, battery-backed networking, or protection from brief interruptions and brownouts. A surge protector provides no battery runtime.
TV and home theater
Prioritize adequate spacing, a working protection indicator, full protection modes, and documented filtering only if interference is a real issue. Consider coaxial or network protection only when the exact model provides it and the installation is compatible.

Whole-home protection
A plug-in strip protects only equipment connected through it. A service-panel or whole-home surge protective device requires proper installation and grounding by a qualified electrician; it complements rather than duplicates point-of-use protection.
Safety rules and failure signs
- Never plug one power strip or surge protector into another. Belkin identifies daisy-chaining as a fire and overload hazard: Belkin safety guidance.
- Do not use ordinary strips for space heaters, portable air conditioners, microwaves, toasters, coffee makers, hair dryers, curling irons, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, sump pumps, aquarium equipment, or life-support medical devices.
- Do not use standard indoor strips outdoors.
- Test the receptacle with a suitable outlet tester or have an electrician check polarity and grounding. A protector cannot work as intended on an improperly wired or ungrounded outlet.
- Replace a unit after a known severe surge or lightning event, or when you see melting, discoloration, cracking, heat damage, buzzing, or a damaged cord.
- Follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions. Belkin advises replacing one of its protectors every three years or immediately after an over-voltage event; that is Belkin’s guidance, not a universal interval: Belkin replacement guidance.
No plug-in protector is lightning-proof. In lightning-prone areas, broader grounding, service-panel protection, and unplugging equipment when practical provide a more complete strategy.
How to choose in one minute
- Need outage runtime or automatic shutdown? Buy a UPS, not just a strip.
- Need a documented basic desk or TV strip? Choose the Belkin BE106000 or Eaton TLP606B according to outlet layout and warranty preference.
- Need the leading high-outlet option? Consider the Anker 351 only after resolving its outlet-count and certification details.
- Need fast USB-C charging? Choose by measured wattage and USB Power Delivery support, not the number of ports.
- Need many high-wattage appliances? Add properly rated receptacles or circuits; do not daisy-chain strips.
- Need protection for the whole house? Consult a qualified electrician about a panel-mounted SPD.
Connected-equipment warranties have exclusions, geographic limits, proof-of-purchase rules, installation requirements, and maximum payouts. Treat them as a limited contractual benefit, not proof that a product will prevent damage.
