Grow several in containers beside doors, seating and the barbecue, but treat them as local, temporary scent barriers—not guaranteed fly control. Clean spills, secure rubbish and remove food waste first; sanitation is more dependable than any planting.
What these plants can—and cannot—do
Most advice about fly-repellent plants is based on aromatic foliage, traditional gardening practice or tests of crushed leaves and concentrated oils. It does not show that an intact landscape planting will clear flies from a whole garden.
Marlborough District Council’s companion-planting guidance specifically recommends basil, plus pots of eau-de-cologne mint, pyrethrum and tansy near a back door or barbecue. That is useful placement advice, not a controlled efficacy trial.
A 2025 Clemson Extension summary reports a Malaria Journal meta-analysis of 62 studies—six field studies and 56 laboratory studies—on aromatic plants and insect repellence. The summary says fragrance dissipates, landscape plantings were not examined in the reviewed studies, and leaves generally need to be crushed or converted to oil to release a measurable repellent effect. It does not establish a reliable percentage reduction from simply planting these species.

- REUSABLE: TERRO fly trap can be emptied and refilled with bait and water to continue trapping flies
- EASY TO USE: Simply pour in the fly trap bait, then add water to the fill line and swirl to mix. Add more water as needed to keep the bait moist and flies submerged
- OUTDOOR FLY TRAPS: Attracts and traps flies outdoors
- IRRESISTIBLE TO FLIES: Combined with the fly bait, the trap’s color and diamond-shaped lid is designed to attract more flies
- SAY GOODBYE TO FLIES: Use these fly traps outdoors to attract, trap, and kill a variety of flies, including house flies, barn flies, and bottle flies; they go in for a treat but are unable to escape
The NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (June 2024) likewise describes evidence for some botanical repellents as limited and says claims have not been rigorously validated. For dependable personal protection, it recommends EPA-registered repellents; botanical products generally protect for less time than DEET.
The nine plants
1. Basil
Basil is a strongly scented culinary herb and has the clearest practical support in the sources here. Put pots beside patio seating, an exterior door or an outdoor eating area. Expect a nearby aroma, not exclusion of flies across the garden. Basil seeds for planting are a sensible starting point if you want an inexpensive container display.

- AWARD WINNING: Consistently voted The Chronicle of the Horse Reader's Choice for favorite fly sprays multiple years running
2. Mint
Mint is strongly aromatic and the council guidance specifically recommends potted mint near a back door or barbecue. Keep it in containers: it spreads aggressively in open ground and can become difficult to remove. Mint’s scent is best treated as a short-range aid around the pot.
3. Tansy
Tansy is a traditional placement plant, including near outdoor cooking areas. Do not place it where children or pets can reach it, and keep it away from grazing animals: tansy can be toxic. Its inclusion reflects traditional guidance rather than proof of whole-garden fly control.

- FLY CONTROL: Flies are lured into the flytrap and drowned by a superpowerful bait with an irresistible odor that is effective for numerous species, catching up to 20,000 flies!
- FAST ACTING: uses an attractant bait that flies can’t resist. Lured by the scent, flies enter the trap through the cap and drown in the water. safest and most effective pest control solution.
- SAFE BAIT: The fly catcher Non-Toxic bait is safe around children and pets, composed of food-grade ingredients without any poisons or chemicals.
- USER-FRIENDLY: To use, remove the cap of the bottle and fill it with water up to the fill line. Open the bait bag and pour its contents into the bottle. Then, use the included wire to hang the trap outside near a fly source.
- OUTDOORS USE ONLY: Flies are enamored with the strong odor, but you are best off far away. Use only outdoors and hang at least 20 feet away from outdoor sitting areas.
4. Lavender
Lavender is ornamental, aromatic and drought-tolerant where the climate suits it. Research discussed by Clemson Extension and laboratory oil studies concerns concentrated fragrance more than an untouched plant, so use lavender for appearance and a pleasant local scent as well as any possible deterrent effect.
5. Lemongrass
Lemongrass has lemon-scented foliage and contains citronella-related compounds discussed in laboratory and animal-treatment research. It needs warmth and sun; in cool climates, grow it as a seasonal or container plant. Do not equate its chemistry with proven protection from a living clump.

- DISCREETLY DRAW FLIES AWAY FROM YOUR HOME. Hang the trap 20 feet from your home to quickly draw flies away making this the best fly trap for outside fly control.
- NON-TOXIC BAIT. SAFE FOR KIDS AND PETS. Our fly traps outdoor hanging fly trap bait contains only fish, egg and bran. Enjoy effective, worry free outdoor fly control.
- QUICKLY ATTRACTS ALL FILTH FLIES. Once you add water, the fly catcher outdoor bait dissolves, releasing a smell flies find irresistible. Use as an outside fly traps for patio, house fly trap, horse or ranch fly trap.
- 2 IN 1 BAIT MEANS LESS ODOR. Unlike most outdoor fly repellent, our fly catcher used both smell and a blue visual lure to attract flies, meaning we dont have to make it as smelly as other fly repellent outdoor products.
- EASY TO SET UP IN SECONDS. Add the fly bait refill, fill water to the fill line, then hang the flytrap outdoor 20 feet away, and you are done!
6. Rosemary
Rosemary is a useful culinary shrub with aromatic foliage and works well in a sunny container or border. Laboratory results for rosemary oil have varied by fly sex and exposure time, and an uncut plant has not been shown to exclude flies. Light pruning can keep the plant productive, but crushing foliage only gives a brief, close-range burst of scent.
7. Marigold
Marigolds are easy ornamental plants commonly associated with pest-deterring companion planting. That reputation is stronger than the controlled evidence for flies specifically. Grow them around seating or paths for color, while treating any fly effect as unproven and local.

- Area Coverage up to 1/2 Acre. Good for home, patio, balcony, courtyard, front porch, garden, pergola, deck, backyard, camping, swimming pool, garage, farm, etc.
8. Peppermint
Peppermint provides a strong scent and is well suited to containers. Oil assays have reported deterrence in some settings, but they do not establish how an intact peppermint plant performs in a garden. Containing the plant also prevents its vigorous spread.
9. Citronella-scented geranium
This popular patio plant is sold under a “citronella” name, but marketing terminology does not make it equivalent to a proven spatial repellent. Place it in a sunny pot near seating for its fragrance and ornamental value; do not assume one plant will create a mosquito- or fly-proof zone.

| Plant | Best use | Container guidance | Evidence and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basil | Door, patio table or barbecue | Excellent | Strongest practical support in this group; no guaranteed control |
| Mint | Back door or barbecue | Use a container to control spread | Traditional placement advice; aggressive in ground |
| Tansy | Traditional perimeter placement | Container can improve control | Keep away from children, pets and grazing animals; potentially toxic |
| Lavender | Sunny patio and ornamental borders | Works well where climate permits | Evidence mainly concerns aromatic oils, not intact plantings |
| Lemongrass | Warm, sunny patio | Container or seasonal plant in cool climates | Citronella-related compounds; no proof of garden-wide effect |
| Rosemary | Sunny cooking area | Good in a pot or border | Oil results vary; do not promise fly exclusion |
| Marigold | Colorful edging and containers | Easy ornamental option | Companion-planting folklore exceeds fly-specific evidence |
| Peppermint | Small, strongly scented patio display | Keep contained | Oil studies do not establish whole-plant performance |
| Citronella-scented geranium | Patio pots | Best as a container plant | “Citronella” name is not proof of a spatial repellent effect |
How to arrange the plants
- Identify the occupied zone. Measure the door, seating area or barbecue where people actually gather.
- Cluster containers there. Several pots close to that zone are more rational than scattering plants across a large garden, because fragrance dissipates quickly.
- Match conditions. Give sun-loving herbs and lavender the light they require; use containers for mint, peppermint, lemongrass in cool climates and any plant you need to move or contain.
- Maintain healthy foliage. Water and prune according to the plant’s needs. Crushing a leaf can release more aroma briefly, but it damages the foliage and is not a durable control method.
- Remove attractants. Empty food scraps, clean spills, keep bins closed and address decaying material. These steps usually matter more than scent.
- Escalate when necessary. If flies persist despite sanitation, use an EPA-registered repellent, trap or other integrated pest-management measure appropriate to the site and label.
What the evidence says about oils versus living plants
A Journal of Integrated Pest Management review discusses citronella, lemongrass constituents and other botanicals against horn and stable flies, largely in laboratory or animal-treatment settings. A laboratory study of spotted-wing drosophila found some deterrence from geranium, peppermint, citronella, lavender and thyme oils; rosemary and eucalyptus results varied by sex and time. Those findings show that concentrated compounds can affect flies under test conditions, not that an uncut garden planting will produce the same result.
Quick Recap
Safer expectations for your garden
- Use the plants to make a small outdoor area more pleasant, not to promise a fly-free property.
- Keep toxic or invasive species managed: tansy requires particular safety care, while mint and peppermint should be contained.
- Do not apply essential oils to skin, pets, food surfaces or plants unless the product label specifically permits it.
- For dependable protection during meals or heavy infestations, rely on registered products and source control rather than plant scent alone.
