Start with a restart: unplug an Echo speaker for about 10 seconds (15 seconds for screen models), then reconnect it. If you need to erase settings, use the button or menu procedure for the exact model. For a sale, return, or gift, perform a full factory reset and deregister the device from Amazon. “Reset Alexa” is not one universal command: restart, connection-preserving reset, factory reset, and deregistration have different results.
Choose the right action

Amazon documents model-specific procedures in its current Echo support directory. A physical reset does not necessarily remove the device from your Amazon account, so deregister separately for any ownership transfer.
Restart an unresponsive Echo before resetting it
- Unplug the power adapter.
- Wait about 10 seconds for a speaker without a screen, or 15 seconds for a screen device.
- Reconnect the original adapter and wait for the light ring, light bar, or display to return.
This is a reboot, not an erase. Amazon’s instructions are at Echo troubleshooting and screen-device troubleshooting.
Identify your Echo
- First-generation Echo or Echo Dot: has a physical reset pinhole.
- Second-generation Echo: has Action, Microphone Off, and volume buttons.
- Third- through fifth-generation Echo and Echo Dot: have a top Action button; full reset uses Microphone Off and Volume Down.
- Echo Pop: is a flat speaker with a light bar and separate Volume Up, Volume Down, and Microphone Off buttons.
- Screen models: Echo Show, Echo Show 5/8/10/15/21, Echo Spot, and Echo Hub primarily use on-screen controls.
- Echo Auto and Echo Buds: need additional Bluetooth and app cleanup.
If you cannot identify the generation, inspect the buttons and use the closest matching row below. Do not substitute a generic Action-button instruction for a model with different controls.

The Action button is the button with a single dot. It is not the microphone control. Time a 20-second instruction from the moment both buttons are held, and wait through the light sequence instead of releasing when the speaker pauses.
Reset other Echo devices
Echo Pop
- Retain smart-home connections: hold Volume Down + Volume Up for 15 seconds.
- Factory reset: hold Volume Down + Microphone Off for 25 seconds.

Echo Studio
For the 2019 release, hold Action for 20 seconds to retain connections, or Volume Down + Microphone Enable/Disable for 20 seconds for a full reset. Source: Amazon.
The 2025 Echo Studio uses a different combination: hold Microphone Enable/Disable + Volume Down for 15 seconds to retain smart-home connections, or 25 seconds for a full reset. Voice confirmation precedes the microphone indicator cycling. Source: Amazon.

Echo Flex
- Retain connections: hold Action for 20 seconds.
- Factory reset: hold Microphone Off for 20 seconds.

Echo Show, Echo Spot, and other screen devices
For a hardware reset, hold Microphones & Camera Disable/Enable + Volume Down and release when the Amazon logo appears, usually after about 15 seconds. Then follow the display.
For a menu reset, say “Go to Settings,” or open Settings manually. On the original interface, swipe down from the top; with Alexa+, open the on-screen Menu. Select Settings → Device Options → About this Device → Reset to Factory Defaults. Echo Show 2nd generation and Echo Show 10 may also offer Reset to Factory Defaults but retain Smart Home Device Connections. Do not choose that option for a new owner. Labels can vary on Echo Hub and Echo Show 5 as software changes. Source: Amazon.
Echo Spot (2024 release)
Open Settings (or say “Go to Settings”), select Device Options → Factory Reset, then choose either Reset, but Retain Smart Home Device Connections or Reset to Factory Defaults. Afterward, the display shows a setup QR code for Alexa app setup. Source: Amazon.

Echo Hub
Open Settings, then choose Device Options → About the Device → Reset to Factory Defaults. Select whether to retain smart-home connections or clear everything. Menu wording may vary during software updates. Source: Amazon.
Echo Auto
- Press the Mute button.
- Hold Action for 15 seconds, until Alexa announces the reset.
- Wait for the light bar to pulse orange.
- In your phone’s Bluetooth settings, forget Echo Auto.
- In Alexa, open Devices, select Echo Auto if it remains listed, and choose Forget Device.
- Set it up again.

Echo Buds
- Place the buds in the case, close it, and wait 30 seconds for a restart attempt.
- In Alexa, select Devices, choose Echo Buds, and select Forget Device if listed.
- Forget the buds in your phone’s Bluetooth settings, plus any previously paired laptop or tablet.
- Charge the case until its LED is green.
- Put the buds in the case, close it, and hold the case button for 15 seconds.
- Release when the LED flashes orange, then wait for the flashing to stop.
- Run setup again.

Deregister from the Alexa app or Amazon account
Deregistration is an account action, not a guaranteed physical wipe. It removes the device from the Amazon account and disconnects Amazon digital content and services; it does not delete the Amazon account itself.
- In the Alexa app, open Devices → Echo & Alexa.
- Select the device and open Device Settings (the gear icon).
- Find the registration area, often labeled Registered To.
- Select Deregister and confirm.
Labels move between app versions. You can also sign in to Amazon’s device-management page, select the device, and choose Deregister. Source: Amazon. A commonly documented app path is also described by Android Authority.
What a factory reset erases
A full factory reset clears Wi-Fi credentials, personal information held in device settings, device-specific configuration, and smart-home connections. A connection-preserving reset clears personal and device settings but keeps compatible smart-home connections where Amazon provides that option.

A device reset is not the same as deleting Alexa account data. The available documentation does not establish that every cloud voice-history item, routine, subscription, or household-device record is deleted by resetting hardware. Review and remove account data separately if that is your goal.

- Perform the model’s full factory reset, not the connection-preserving option.
- Wait until the device shows or announces setup mode.
- Deregister it in the Alexa app or Amazon device-management page.
- Remove Bluetooth pairings. This is essential for Echo Auto and Echo Buds and prudent for third-party accessories.
- Remove the Echo from the Alexa app if it remains listed and detach accessories or smart-home associations that should not transfer.
- Do not leave it connected to your Wi-Fi or Amazon account.
A physical reset alone should not be treated as sufficient for a handoff. The new owner completes setup with their own Amazon account.
Finish setup after resetting
An orange or pulsing-orange light, a cycling light ring, or a setup screen/QR code indicates that the device is waiting for setup. Open the Alexa app, use Devices and Add Device, connect the Echo to Wi-Fi, and register it to the intended account. A reset does not automatically complete this process.
For a connection-preserving reset, compatible smart-home links may remain, but verify that devices respond. Re-pair Bluetooth speakers, phones, earbuds, or vehicles as needed.

When a reset fails
No response or no lights
- Unplug and reconnect the device.
- Verify the model and generation.
- Repeat the exact button combination for the complete specified time.
- Try another outlet and, where practical, the original power adapter.
If buttons, lights, and display remain completely dead, suspect a power or hardware fault rather than expecting another reset to fix it.
The device never enters setup mode
Check that you held the correct buttons together and waited through the entire light-ring or light-bar sequence. Older models use a pinhole or an 8-second interval; newer products can require 15, 20, or 25 seconds.
Setup mode appears, but Alexa cannot find the Echo
Restart the phone, confirm Bluetooth and local-network permissions for Alexa, and keep the phone on the Wi-Fi network you want the Echo to use. These are practical troubleshooting steps, not a substitute for the model-specific reset procedure.
The device belongs to another Amazon account
The previous owner must deregister it. If that is impossible, use Amazon’s device-management support; a factory reset does not prove that the account association has been removed.
A third-party Alexa speaker is still partly configured
Remove or deregister it through Alexa, then follow the manufacturer’s own factory-reset procedure. The Alexa app cannot necessarily wipe every subsystem in a Sonos or other multi-assistant device. Android Authority discusses this limitation at its reset guide.

- A failed router, wrong Wi-Fi password, network incompatibility, or broadband outage will not be repaired by erasing the Echo.
- A Bluetooth problem may require forgetting and re-pairing the accessory rather than resetting Alexa.
- An Amazon service outage can affect responses while the hardware is working.
- A completely dead device points toward power or hardware diagnosis.
