3 Essential Hand Planes for a General Woodworking Bench

A No. 5 jack, No. 7 jointer and No. 4 smoother cover most full-size hand-tool work. Small-project woodworkers may get more value by replacing the jointer with a block plane.

For most general hand-tool woodworking, the classic three-plane system is a No. 5 jack plane, a No. 7 jointer plane and a No. 4 smoothing plane. The jack removes twist and excess stock, the jointer straightens long edges and broad panels, and the smoother takes the final fine shavings. If your work is mainly boxes, drawers or small parts, substitute a 6–7-inch block plane for the jointer.

The three planes and what each one does

Plane Primary job Typical sole length Best project scale
No. 5 jack Roughing, removing twist and general flattening Approximately 13–16 inches Most boards and general bench work
No. 7 jointer Straightening edges and flattening long surfaces Approximately 20–30 inches Furniture parts, panels and glue joints
No. 4 smoother Fine finishing passes and removing small high spots Approximately 9–10 inches Finish-ready surfaces

These length ranges are conventional approximations reported by Handplane Central, not a specification shared by every manufacturer. A plane’s role also depends on blade projection, mouth opening, camber and how accurately its sole and iron are prepared.

No. 5 jack plane: the adaptable first full-size plane

The jack plane is the workhorse. A heavier, cambered setup can take deeper shavings to remove milling marks, cup and twist. With the iron sharpened and set for a lighter cut, the same plane can prepare a reasonably flat surface before the finishing stage. Its medium sole is long enough to ride over short hollows but short enough to follow some local contours.

Handplane Central describes the Stanley No. 5 as a versatile example: it is roughly 13–16 inches long, short enough for many smoothing tasks and long enough for short jointing. Woodcraft groups the No. 5 and No. 5-1/2 among jack planes. For a first full-size purchase, this versatility usually matters more than a particular brand.

No. 7 jointer plane: control on long work

The jointer’s long sole bridges hollows instead of dropping into each one. That makes it the specialist for straightening board edges before an edge-to-edge glue-up and for flattening longer boards, cabinet sides and panels after rougher work.

Woodcraft identifies Nos. 7 and 8 as jointer planes and describes the No. 7 as a tool for flattening wood over a large area. The extra length is an advantage only when the work is large enough to need it; on a small box part, it can be cumbersome and adds little accuracy.

No. 4 smoothing plane: the finishing tool

The No. 4 has a shorter sole and is normally set for a fine cut. It removes the last small high spots and can leave a surface ready for the chosen finish when the iron is sharp and the cut is controlled. Woodcraft lists Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 4-1/2 as smoothing-plane sizes.

As one current example, Spear & Jackson describes its No. 3 as “Ideal for cabinet work and general joinery.” That model has a cast-iron body, a precision-milled base and a 45 mm high-carbon-steel blade. Those specifications describe that product, not every No. 4-style smoother. In practice, sharpness, a fine mouth opening and a stable adjustment are more important than a model number alone.

When a block plane is the better third purchase

A block plane is typically about 6–7 inches long. Its compact body is convenient for end grain, trimming a joint flush, easing an edge and working on small components. Woodcraft and WPlane both include a block plane, No. 4 smoother and No. 5 jack in beginner-oriented three-plane setups.

Choose the block-plane version of the trio when your projects are chiefly:

Keep the No. 7 instead when you routinely prepare full-size boards, table components, cabinet sides or long glue joints by hand. The choice is about the scale and operations of your work, not a universal ranking of planes.

How to choose and set up the three-plane system

Match sole length to the defect

  • Use the jack when you need to remove material or deal with twist and local unevenness.
  • Use the jointer when a long sole can bridge hollows and establish a straight edge or broad reference surface.
  • Use the smoother when only small ridges and high spots remain.

Match the cut to the stage

Start rough with a deeper projection and, where appropriate, a cambered iron. Reduce the projection as the surface becomes flatter. Finish with the smoother’s fine cut and a narrow mouth opening. A plane that is nominally the right size will still perform poorly if its iron is dull, its mouth is too open for the cut or the work is not supported.

  • Impact-resistant wood handle with contoured grip

Plan the buying order

  1. Buy the No. 5 jack first if you want one full-size plane that covers the most preparation tasks.
  2. Add the No. 4 smoother when you need consistently fine, finish-ready surfaces.
  3. Choose the third role by project scale: buy the No. 7 jointer for long edges and panels, or a block plane for small parts and end grain.

Do you need a jack, jointer and smoother?

You do not need all three to begin. A sharp No. 5 can handle initial flattening and many general jobs, while a carefully set No. 4 can produce a fine surface. The No. 7 earns its space when long reference surfaces and glue-ready edges are a recurring requirement. Conversely, a block plane may contribute more useful work than a jointer in a small-project shop.

The classic full-size answer remains No. 5, No. 7 and No. 4 because the three roles divide roughing, straightening and finishing. Beginner recommendations that use a block plane instead are addressing a different project mix rather than contradicting that system.

Which plane leaves the smoothest finish?

The No. 4 smoothing plane is the dedicated finishing choice. It is intended for fine final cuts, but the result depends on a sharp iron, a controlled shaving thickness, a suitable mouth opening and work that has already been brought close to flat. A smoother cannot compensate for severe twist or deep hollows that still require the jack or jointer.
