But that convenience comes with a dated Bluetooth-first platform, no built-in keypad, and uncertainty about future app and accessory support. In 2026, it makes the most sense for an existing owner or a buyer who specifically wants touch-to-open entry—not as a default smart-lock choice.
What the Kwikset Kevo is—and what “powered by UniKey” means
The Kevo 2nd Gen is a single-cylinder residential deadbolt with Bluetooth-based smartphone access. Kwikset supplies the lock hardware; UniKey provides the mobile-access technology and Kevo service platform. It is not a Wi-Fi lock with internet access built into the deadbolt.
It can be operated in four ways: touch-to-open with an enrolled phone, touch-to-open with an enrolled Kevo fob, a conventional exterior key, or the interior thumbturn. Listed 2nd Gen models use four AA batteries and Kwikset SmartKey technology for re-keying to a compatible Kwikset KW1 key. The exact keyway and hardware details should be confirmed for the model being considered.

How touch-to-open works in everyday use
The intended routine is straightforward: carry an authorized phone or fob, approach the locked door, then touch the exterior deadbolt. Bluetooth communication and the Kevo app handle authorization; you normally do not need to open the app and press an unlock button.
- Enroll a compatible phone or fob in the Kevo system.
- Keep the phone’s Bluetooth enabled and carry it within the lock’s effective range.
- Touch the exterior lock to initiate unlocking, then enter when the lock signals that it has released.
Calibration affects activation range and the system’s attempt to distinguish a device inside the home from one outside. The user guide warns that radio-based inside/outside detection is not guaranteed, so treat it as a risk-reduction feature, not a fail-safe. Carry the physical key or fob while learning how the lock behaves.
Published compatibility materials describe Bluetooth Low Energy/Bluetooth 4.0 and list older Apple and Android devices. Those historical lists identify the product generation; they do not establish that a particular current phone or operating-system release will work. Check the current app listing and support information, install the app on the intended phone, and verify operation before relying on the lock.

Installation and door fit matter more than the “smart” label
Kevo is intended for standard residential exterior doors and is marketed as a DIY installation. One listed 2nd Gen model specifies a door-thickness range of 1⅜ to 2 inches; check the exact model’s instructions along with the existing bore, backset, edge bore, and strike location before buying.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A sagging, warped, or tightly fitted door can make the motor strain, stall, or consume batteries faster. Electronics cannot correct a mechanical alignment problem.
- Verify the door dimensions and existing deadbolt geometry against the installation guide.
- Check that the bolt moves smoothly by hand with the door open and closed.
- Install the exterior and interior assemblies and battery pack according to the model-specific instructions.
- Enroll phones and fobs, then complete the required calibration.
- With the door open, test electronic operation, the mechanical key, and the interior thumbturn. Then test with the door closed and confirm the bolt is not binding.

- Use with Kevo Plus Connected Hub to remotely lock or unlock your door from anywhere (sold separately for $99)
- Kevo Convert now works with Alexa voice commands (requires Kevo Plus Connected Hub)
- Not Touch-to-Open – you will need a Kevo 2 (99250-203) Smart Lock
- Smart Home compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Ring Doorbell, Skybell, Nest Learning Thermostat, select Honeywell Thermostats, Android Wear and IFTTT
eKeys, household access, and guest limitations
Kevo supports electronic keys, or eKeys, that let an owner share access through the service. Historical user documentation describes owner, admin, and anytime-access roles with different abilities to manage keys, view activity, or receive notifications. Do not assume every role or sharing feature remains unchanged in the current app.
- Grant deliberately: Confirm the recipient and choose only the access level they need; an administrator can have broader control than a guest.
- Revoke access when it is no longer needed: Use the account’s current controls to disable or delete a credential, and confirm the change in the app.
- If a phone is lost: Disable its eKey through the Kevo account if possible, and secure the associated account.
- If a fob is lost or the lock is reset: Follow the current reset and re-enrollment procedure; a reset may remove enrolled phones and fobs. Keep the physical key available before starting.
A guest without a compatible phone still needs a fob, a physical key, or help from someone with access. UniKey’s current terms describe a soft limit of 10 digital credentials or users per account or device for residential service; commercial, enterprise, and multi-tenant use requires a separate written agreement. Check the terms for the intended use rather than assuming a residential account suits a rental or managed property.

Bluetooth, remote access, and smart-home features
Local Bluetooth operation means a phone or fob communicates near the lock. Remote control and some voice or smart-home functions have historically required the separate Kevo Plus accessory or gateway. That makes the base Kevo different from a lock with built-in Wi-Fi.
Older listings and product materials mention integrations such as Alexa, Ring, SkyBell, selected Honeywell thermostats, Android Wear, and IFTTT-related products. Treat these as historical compatibility claims: an integration can depend on a gateway, account, third-party service, or API that may have changed. Confirm a specific integration and accessory are currently available and supported before buying; do not count on an old compatibility list as a present-day guarantee.

Security: useful safeguards, not a blanket guarantee
Kwikset and UniKey materials describe encrypted authentication, including “military-grade” PKI encryption. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent security certification. The lock also retains a conventional keyway, so physical key security and the quality of the installation remain relevant.

- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Wi-Fi enabled smart door lock (no hub required), use the Kwikset app to remotely lock and unlock, share guest access, view activity history and more
- CONVENIENT KEYLESS ENTRY: Enable intelligent geofencing to automatically unlock as you approach your home, unlock using the Kwikset app or enter a code on the keypad
- SHARE ACCESS WITH GUESTS: Backlit keypad supports up to 250 access codes for keyless entry; use the Kwikset app to share temporary, scheduled or permanent access codes with family and guests
- SMART HOME INTEGRATION: Works with Amazon Alexa or Google Home, control your lock with your voice and create helpful automations that keep your home secure
- INTRUSION DETECTION: Instant notifications in the Kwikset app alert you of any unusual lock activity, including invalid code attempts or lock tampering
The inside/outside positioning feature is designed to reduce the chance of an authorized phone inside the home triggering an unlock from outside. Kwikset’s user guide says its accuracy and reliability cannot be guaranteed. Keep the app account protected, use any available app passcode, and account for the possibility that service or phone support could change over the lock’s life. A connected credential system adds convenience, but also makes account and service continuity part of access planning.

Reliability, batteries, and recovery
Four AA batteries power the listed 2nd Gen models. Replace all cells together with fresh, quality batteries, and test the lock after replacement. Keep a physical key accessible outside the home, not on the other side of the locked door. Remote access, if configured, should not be the only emergency-entry plan.
If touch does nothing
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, the app is installed, the user is signed in, and the phone is enrolled.
- Check that the app has the required Bluetooth and background permissions and that battery-saving settings are not preventing it from operating.
- Move the phone closer, check battery condition, and verify calibration.
- Test whether the deadbolt moves freely; use the mechanical key rather than repeatedly forcing a motor against a misaligned strike.
If unlocking is inconsistent
Phone position, a pocket or bag that weakens the signal, calibration, proximity while the phone is inside, radio interference, low batteries, door alignment, or changes in app and operating-system compatibility can all affect behavior. Recalibrate according to the guide and test with the door open before relying on the result.
If batteries drain quickly or a reset is needed
Check door alignment and motor resistance first. Test the lock with the door open and closed after replacing the full battery set. A reset may erase enrolled devices and require re-enrollment and recalibration, so have the key and account access ready before starting.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Kevo still work in 2026?
UniKey’s current website and Kevo login, support, and terms portals show that Kevo service is still represented online. That is evidence of a service presence, not a promise of indefinite support, uninterrupted operation, current compatibility with every phone, or continued availability of every legacy feature. Check the live app listing, account registration, support response, and any required accessory before committing to a new installation.
Retail listings also remain visible, but inventory is not proof that a product is actively developed or that replacement fobs and gateways will remain easy to obtain. Home Depot listings observed for this article included one satin-nickel model at $203.96 and other finishes or models at about $222.13–$233.81; these are retailer-specific listing snapshots, not stable recommended prices or evidence of current stock. At those levels, Kevo is hard to justify unless touch-to-open is the feature the buyer values most.

Which kind of lock is a better fit?
| Lock type | Why choose it | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keypad smart deadbolt | Code entry works for guests who do not have an enrolled phone or fob. | Code management creates its own security and usability work; entry may feel less seamless than touch-to-open. | Families, service workers, guests, and rentals. |
| Wi-Fi smart lock | Designed for internet-connected status and remote access without relying on a Kevo-specific bridge. | Can involve more cloud dependence and battery use. | Owners who need remote status, unlocking, or connected automations. |
| Apple Home Key-compatible lock | Can offer native phone or watch access for Apple users. | Most useful in an Apple-centered home; less suited to mixed-device households. | Households prioritizing Apple Home and Wallet integration. |
| Retrofit interior lock | May preserve existing exterior hardware and keys while automating the inside thumbturn. | Compatibility depends on the existing deadbolt and it may not provide touch-to-open outside. | Renters or owners who cannot replace exterior hardware. |
| Mechanical keypad or conventional deadbolt | Avoids apps, cloud accounts, Bluetooth, and firmware support. | No remote access, digital guest management, or electronic activity history. | Buyers who prioritize simple operation and minimal connected-service dependence. |
These are categories, not a claim that every model has the same features. Check current model availability, compatibility, and service terms for the specific alternatives under consideration.
Who should buy, keep, or avoid a Kevo?
Keep it if you already own one
If your lock and phone still work reliably, the touch-to-open experience may remain useful. Maintain the mechanical key backup, replace batteries as a set, and verify eKey and app access periodically. Consider replacement if the app stops supporting your phone, required accessories cannot be obtained, or reliable access matters more than preserving the familiar interaction.
Consider buying only if touch-to-open is decisive
A new buyer should verify the app works on the intended phone, confirm account registration and support, check that needed fobs or gateways are obtainable, and buy only with clear return rights. A meaningful discount matters because the platform’s age and accessory dependence are part of the cost.
Choose another type if access flexibility is the priority
Households with children, guests, contractors, or mixed phone platforms are usually better served by code access or another entry method that does not require each person to enroll a compatible phone. Buyers who require native modern smart-home standards, built-in remote access, or minimal dependence on a legacy service should compare current locks in those categories instead.
Kevo Convert is explicitly marked discontinued on Kwikset’s support page, but that status should not be generalized to every Kevo 2nd Gen model: Kwikset Kevo Convert support page.
