The bag stores air; one recorder serves as the chanter and the other as a drone. It demonstrates the basic idea, but it is not an authentic or tuned Scottish bagpipe.
Choose a project: recorder build or glove-and-bottle experiment
| Project | What you need | What it demonstrates | Relative complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garbage bag and recorders | Two recorders, one garbage bag, two pens, scissors and tape | A bag air reservoir feeding separate chanter and drone tubes | More involved: make a blowpipe and seal three connections |
| Glove and bottle | Disposable glove, drinking straw, plastic water bottle, scissors, rubber band and masking or washi tape | A vibrating glove membrane and bottle resonance | Simpler sound experiment; it does not use separate chanter and drone tubes |
The recorder version is the closer choice if you want a bagpipe-like craft. The Cape Town Science Centre’s glove activity is a different kind of sound demonstration, not another version of the recorder-and-drone arrangement. Neither source establishes a particular loudness or tuning. Hackaday’s description of the recorder build calls it a rough facsimile that works on the same basic principle and makes noise; the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery activity supplies the household materials and construction approach.
Make the garbage-bag and recorder version
Gather the materials
- Two recorders
- One garbage bag
- Two pens that can be taken apart
- Scissors
- Tape
Assemble the air reservoir and tubes
- Take apart the pens and join their bodies end to end to form a blowpipe.
- Attach the joined pen tube to an opening in the garbage bag with tape. Seal around the connection so air can be blown into the bag.
- Fit one recorder into a separate bag opening and tape around it. This recorder is the chanter: finger positions change its pitch.
- Fit the second recorder into another opening and tape around it. This is the drone, which supplies a continuous note.
- Blow through the pen tube to inflate the bag. Squeeze the bag to push air through the recorders, then use the chanter’s finger positions to change pitch.
The cited build instructions do not specify hole sizes, tuning, air pressure or a reliable performance outcome. Seal the connections as well as you can, but do not expect the assembly to be tuned like a traditional instrument.
Try the glove-and-bottle alternative
For this activity, the Cape Town Science Centre lists a disposable glove, drinking straw, plastic water bottle, scissors, rubber band and masking or washi tape. Its instructions have you cut the bottom from the bottle, stretch the glove over the bottle opening and secure it with a rubber band. The glove-and-bottle setup makes sound through a different mechanism from the recorder build.

The science centre explains that blowing stretches the elastic glove, which then contracts; that rapid cycle makes part of the glove vibrate and sends sound waves into the bottle. Its instructions specifically recommend: “Have an adult help cutting the bottle smoothly, so it doesn’t cut your skin.” See the Cape Town Science Centre’s glove bagpipes activity for the activity details.

Both crafts use an air-holding element and direct air toward a sound-producing part, but that does not make them equivalent to a traditional bagpipe. A traditional instrument relies on reeds, and the reed must have a precise acoustic fit with the chanter, as described by the Bagpipe Society’s guide to making a bagpipe. The household recorder build is best understood as a demonstration of the air-reservoir idea and a bagpipe-like novelty, not a substitute for a traditional instrument.
