For U.S. gardeners seeking organic seed, Seed Savers Exchange is a strong broad-catalog choice for heirloom vegetables, herbs, flowers, and garlic; Johnny’s Selected Seeds offers a broad catalog for home gardeners and commercial growers; and Adaptive Seeds is a more specialized fit for Pacific Northwest and other short-season northern growers who want open-pollinated varieties. None is automatically the best for every crop or climate: check the organic designation on each product listing, then compare variety, maturity, and growing needs.
Best organic seed companies by the kind of garden you have
These suppliers serve different needs rather than forming a universal ranking. Their catalog descriptions are company-reported, and product availability and organic status can vary by listing.
Seed Savers Exchange: broad heirloom selection
Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit focused on heirloom seed preservation. Its catalog includes organic vegetable, herb, flower, and garlic seeds, and the organization says most of its seeds are USDA-certified organic. It publishes a 2026 USDA organic handling and processing certificate. “Most” is not “all,” so check the individual packet listing for its organic designation, quantity, crop selection, and current availability. Browse Seed Savers Exchange’s organic seeds. See its organic certification information.
Johnny’s Selected Seeds: broad catalog for home and commercial growing
Johnny’s describes its offerings as serving both commercial farms and home gardens, and says it trials and breeds varieties under organic conditions. Its organic catalog displayed 681 products when accessed on September 30, 2026; that changeable catalog count is a snapshot, not a market statistic. The page includes cover crops, flowers, fruit, herbs, vegetables, plants, and supplies. Use the catalog’s organic and seed-type filters, then confirm the exact variety, pack size, and product-level organic designation. Browse Johnny’s organic catalog.

Adaptive Seeds: open-pollinated varieties for northern short seasons
Adaptive Seeds says it is certified organic and is based near Sweet Home, Oregon. It focuses on public-domain, open-pollinated varieties and diverse gene-pool mixes adapted to the Pacific Northwest and other short-season northern climates; it says it does not sell proprietary hybrids. That regional emphasis may suit some growers but does not establish that a variety will perform well everywhere. Check days to maturity and local adaptation for the crop you plan to grow. Read Adaptive Seeds’ company information.

How to choose the right company and variety
Start with the crop and growing conditions, not the company name. A variety’s organic status, climate fit, and seed type are separate questions; a supplier may carry both organic and non-organic products.
- Confirm organic status on the exact listing. Do not infer it from a company’s certification, an “organic” catalog section, or the fact that a seed is heirloom or open-pollinated.
- Match the growing season. Compare days to maturity with your local frost dates and season length. Regional adaptation can be especially important in short-season climates.
- Check crop-specific traits. Consider disease and pest resistance, vigor or yield, and whether the variety suits your intended use. For certified production, USDA identifies maturity, resistance, regional adaptation, vigor or yield, and crop-rotation utility as potentially relevant when evaluating equivalence.
- Choose the seed type that fits your priorities. Organic describes production status. Heirloom and open-pollinated describe other attributes; neither term means a seed is organic. Decide separately whether you prefer open-pollinated seed or are willing to grow a hybrid.
- Check quantity and scale. Packet sizes and catalog offerings differ. Make sure the listing provides the amount you need, whether you are planting a small home bed or sourcing for a larger operation.
- Confirm the product is actually offered. Catalog pages, counts, and availability change. Review the current listing for the crop, variety, pack size, and organic designation before ordering.
What “organic seed” means under USDA rules
For certified organic crop production, USDA rules require organic seed and planting stock unless an equivalent organically produced variety is not commercially available. USDA defines equivalent varieties by whether they are the same type or have sufficiently similar agronomic or marketing characteristics for the operation’s needs. Price cannot be used to determine commercial unavailability. These are sourcing rules for certified production—not a general retail definition that makes conventional seed organic. Read USDA AMS guidance on seeds and planting stock.

Documentation for certified growers
USDA guidance recommends keeping records of the seed and planting stock used, any non-organic choices and their justifications, and the methods used to find organic sources. It describes evidence of contacting three or more seed or planting-stock sources as part of documenting efforts to find organic seed. Follow the guidance and requirements applicable to your operation. Read the USDA guidance document.
Annual transplants are not the same as seed packets
USDA distinguishes seeds, annual seedlings, and planting stock. For an annual organic crop, transplants or starts must have been organically grown. Documentation may include a seller’s organic certificate or an invoice identifying the purchase as organic. USDA also states that genetically engineered varieties are prohibited in organic production. See USDA’s organic crop production practice standards.

How supplier directories can help—and where they stop
A directory can expand the list of companies to consider, but it cannot tell you that every item from a listed supplier is certified organic today. Check current supplier information and the specific product listing before treating a seed as organic. This distinction matters whether you are buying from one of the three highlighted companies or following a directory lead.
