Sometimes. Paperboard or molded-fiber egg cartons are accepted in some paper-recycling programs, while rigid plastic cartons are accepted in some communities and rejected in others. Foam or polystyrene cartons are often excluded from curbside collection. Identify the carton material, remove food residue, and follow your local recycling provider’s current instructions.
Start with the carton material
Egg cartons are made from three common materials, and each follows different recycling rules.
| Carton material | Typical recycling position | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Paperboard or molded fiber | Accepted in some paper or cardboard streams | Recycle only if your local program lists egg cartons or accepts that specific fiber material. Keep it clean and dry. |
| Rigid plastic | Accepted by some programs and rejected by others | Check your provider’s accepted-material list; do not assume that a plastic container symbol guarantees acceptance. |
| Foam or polystyrene | Often excluded from curbside recycling | Check for a specialist drop-off. If none exists, reuse where practical or follow local disposal guidance. |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency summarizes the issue plainly: “Egg cartons: It depends on the material of the carton.” Its examples of recyclable cardboard containers include “some egg cartons,” not every carton everywhere.
Can paper egg cartons go in recycling?
They can in some communities. Paperboard and molded-fiber cartons may be collected with paper or cardboard, but local acceptance and the condition of the carton control the answer.

Check the local list
Look for your city, county, or hauler’s accepted-materials page and search specifically for “egg cartons,” “paper cartons,” or “molded fiber.” EPA guidance is general and recommends checking locally rather than treating its examples as a universal list.
Keep fiber cartons clean and dry
- Empty the carton completely.
- Do not recycle paper that is wet, greasy, or coated with egg residue.
- Remove substantial food contamination before placing the carton in the paper stream.
A clean carton can still be rejected if the local processor does not accept molded fiber, so material condition and program rules both matter.

Can plastic egg cartons go in recycling?
Acceptance varies sharply between local programs. Cuyahoga County reports that some communities accept clear plastic cartons. San Francisco accepts plastic cartons, while Tampa excludes plastic egg trays. These examples show why a rule from another city cannot determine what belongs in your bin.
Use the provider’s exact category
Check whether your program accepts rigid plastic containers, the carton’s resin type, or egg cartons by name. If plastic cartons are accepted, empty them and remove any loose packaging or food residue. If they are not listed, keep them out of the recycling cart rather than relying on the plastic identification mark alone.

Can you recycle Styrofoam egg cartons?
Usually not through curbside recycling. The EPA says very few localities accept polystyrene foam at the curb. Tampa and Cuyahoga County specifically exclude foam egg cartons or trays.
Look for a dedicated option
Some areas operate separate foam drop-off programs, but availability is location-specific. Search your local authority’s waste directory for polystyrene or foam collection and confirm that egg cartons are included before traveling to a site.

What to do before putting a carton in the bin
- Identify the material. Separate paperboard or molded fiber from rigid plastic and foam.
- Check the current local list. Use the recycling provider, municipality, or county that services your address.
- Empty and inspect it. Remove eggshells, liquid, and visible food residue.
- Keep paper dry. Wet or greasy fiber can contaminate the paper stream.
- Follow preparation instructions. Flattening, removing labels, or separating components is required only when your local program says so.
If your program does not accept the carton
Paper and molded-fiber cartons
Cuyahoga County recommends shredding paper cartons for home compost when recycling is unavailable. Add only cartons that are free of plastic coatings and heavy food contamination, and follow your compost system’s accepted-material rules.

Plastic and foam cartons
Reuse them for seed starting, organizing small items, craft projects, or other household purposes where they remain clean and safe. Reuse is preferable to placing a material in the recycling cart when the processor does not accept it.
What about the UK?
For the UK, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and PackUK’s 2027 collection list classifies egg boxes as “commonly collected.” That classification means at least 75% of local authorities across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales collect them at the kerbside. It is not a guarantee that every household’s service accepts every egg box, so check the council or contractor serving your address.
Why “recyclable” does not always mean “accepted in your bin”
A carton may be technically recyclable yet unsuitable for a particular collection route because the local program, sorting equipment, or downstream processor does not handle that material. The practical question is therefore not only whether the carton can be recycled in principle, but whether your current local service accepts it in the condition you have it.
