Use the capacity table below as a starting point, then verify the exact model’s current test rating, Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), operating-temperature range, drain setup and warranty. The available evidence supports a buying guide—not a verified ranking of eight hands-on-tested models.
Start with the basement’s moisture condition
ENERGY STAR’s portable-unit guidance estimates capacity by combining area with dampness. These are starting ranges, not performance guarantees; unusually cold or wet basements may need a more careful assessment. ENERGY STAR advises that oversizing is preferable to undersizing.

Measure the basement and observe its real conditions rather than relying only on a retailer’s square-foot claim. If you are replacing an existing unit, the amount of water it collects per day is another useful sizing clue. A whole-home ducted system is a different product category and should be sized and installed professionally.
Understand what a pint rating means
Capacity is the water removed in 24 hours under defined test conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s newer procedure tests portable dehumidifiers at 65°F instead of the former 80°F condition, so current ratings are lower than many older listings. ENERGY STAR notes that an old 50-pint rating roughly corresponds to 30 pints/day under the newer method, but this is only a broad illustration and models vary. Do not compare ratings from the two test eras as though they were equivalent. See ENERGY STAR’s testing and capacity explanation.

Compare efficiency with IEF
Integrated Energy Factor (IEF) measures litres of water removed per kilowatt-hour; a higher value generally indicates better efficiency. ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 criteria, effective October 1, 2025, set these minimums for certified portable units:

Check the exact model in the ENERGY STAR criteria and product information. A retailer title that says “ENERGY STAR” is not, by itself, proof that the specific model is currently certified.

Choose drainage before you buy
Bucket collection
Every portable unit needs a condensate container, and many shut off with a full-bucket warning. This works when someone can empty the bucket regularly, but it becomes inconvenient in a persistently damp basement.
Gravity hose
A continuous-drain port can route water to a floor drain or sump by gravity. Confirm the connector and hose size in the model manual, keep the hose short and manageable, and make sure its route stays away from electrical connections and does not rise above the drain.

Built-in pump
A pump can move condensate where gravity drainage is impractical. Before buying, verify the specified discharge height, included hose and pump behavior for the exact model; “built-in pump” does not establish a particular lift distance or installation arrangement.
Check low-temperature performance
Basement air below 65°F can frost the coil, trigger repeated compressor cycling and reduce moisture removal. For a cold basement, look for a manufacturer-stated low-temperature operating range and an anti-frost or automatic-defrost feature. Keep clearance around air inlets and outlets, close basement doors and windows while operating, and follow the installation instructions.

Set a sensible humidity target
ENERGY STAR describes 30%–50% relative humidity (RH) as the general building optimum. In colder climates during heating season, 30%–40% may help limit window condensation. Use the unit’s humidistat, or add a digital hygrometer if the display does not show RH. Avoid chasing an unnecessarily low setting, which can increase runtime without solving the source of moisture.

- Clogged gutters and downspouts that discharge beside the foundation.
- Ground that does not slope away from foundation walls.
- Leaks, seepage or sweating surfaces that need repair or waterproofing.
- Clothes-dryer exhaust that is not vented outdoors.
- Inadequate ventilation where appropriate.
Reducing the moisture load improves comfort and can let a properly sized unit cycle less often.
Use this model-comparison checklist
When comparing specific products, record each item from the manufacturer’s manual or an independently verified certification listing:
- Current DOE capacity rating and the test-condition era used.
- Recommended area and dampness assumptions.
- IEF and current ENERGY STAR certification, if applicable.
- Bucket capacity, full-bucket shutoff and emptying access.
- Gravity-drain connection, pump lift and compatible hose.
- Minimum operating temperature and defrost behavior.
- Humidistat controls and readable RH display.
- Documented measured noise, if a credible test is available.
- Warranty, service network and replacement-parts support.
- Physical clearance, outlet location and a safe path for condensate.
Do not rank units by square-foot claims alone; manufacturers may use different assumptions. Retail availability and specifications change, so verify the exact model before purchase.
Models you may see in stores
A Home Depot category page accessed September 30, 2026 listed 50-pint basement units with built-in pumps, including GE ADSE50XWT and Midea MAD50PS1BQGR, alongside other configurations: Home Depot’s basement dehumidifier listings. That category demonstrates commercial availability only; it does not verify current specifications, reliability, certification or comparative performance. Check each manufacturer page and the ENERGY STAR product finder before treating a model as a suitable choice.
Installation and operating safety
- Place the unit on a stable, level surface with the clearances specified by the manufacturer.
- Keep water tubing and discharge away from electrical connections.
- Use a properly grounded outlet and avoid an unsuitable extension cord.
- Clean the filter and inspect the bucket, hose and pump according to the manual.
- Investigate unusual icing, repeated short cycling or a sudden loss of collection instead of simply lowering the humidity setting.
Local utilities or efficiency programs may offer rebates, but eligibility depends on your ZIP code, model and current terms. Verify any offer directly before relying on it.
