Best Moisture Content for Firewood: The Perfect Burn

Firewood should generally measure 20% moisture content or less before burning. Learn how to test the interior, season wood effectively and avoid smoky, inefficient fires.

Firewood burns best at 20% moisture content or less. A practical target is roughly 15%–20%, with 20% treated as the upper limit for burn-ready wood. The dependable way to check is to split a representative log and measure the freshly exposed interior with a wood moisture meter.

Why 20% moisture is the practical limit

Moisture content expresses the water in wood relative to the weight of oven-dry wood. Wood continually exchanges moisture with the surrounding air, so its reading changes with temperature, humidity, airflow and storage conditions.

When damp wood enters a fire, heat must first evaporate its water. That leaves less energy for combustion, lowers fire temperature and encourages incomplete burning. The usual results are more smoke, a sluggish fire, dirty stove glass and greater creosote accumulation in the chimney. A smoldering fire also increases chimney-fire risk.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Burn Wise guidance says wood burns best below 20% moisture. EPA instructional material describes approximately 15%–20% as an efficient range. These are operating targets, not a promise that every species, appliance or climate behaves identically.

RDINSCOS Replaceable Pins Moisture Meter
  • FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
  • CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
  • PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
  • ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.

How to check firewood moisture accurately

A moisture meter is more reliable than counting months or judging the outside of a log. Use this procedure:

  1. Choose representative pieces. Test logs from different parts of the pile, including pieces that do not look exceptionally dry.
  2. Split each log. The outside can dry while the center remains wet, especially on large or unsplit pieces.
  3. Measure the fresh interior. Push a pin-style meter into the newly split face rather than relying on the end grain or weathered surface.
  4. Take several readings. Check two or three locations on a piece and repeat on multiple logs. Use the pattern of readings rather than one unusually dry spot.
  5. Account for temperature and species settings. Cold wood can show a lower indicated reading. Follow the meter’s instructions for temperature compensation and wood-species selection when those features are available.
  6. Apply the threshold consistently. Readings at or below 20% are the practical burn-ready target, while individual meter accuracy and natural variation mean a borderline log deserves additional checks.

A pin-style wood moisture meter for firewood is particularly useful because its probes can reach the freshly split interior. Pinless meters avoid punctures and can scan quickly, but their readings vary with sensing depth, species and surface conditions. Neither type replaces testing representative pieces.

Seasoning time: useful guide, not a guarantee

EPA guidance recommends seasoning firewood for at least six months. EPA consumer material gives approximately six months for softwood and twelve months for hardwood. Those periods are starting points rather than universal deadlines.

Drying speed depends on:

  • species and the wood’s starting moisture;
  • whether the pieces are split;
  • log diameter and piece size;
  • sunlight, wind and general air movement;
  • local temperature and relative humidity;
  • rain or snow reaching the pile; and
  • how tightly the wood is stacked.

Green wood can exceed 50% moisture content. A pile that has sat for six months may still be too wet if it was left in large rounds, packed tightly, exposed to repeated rain or stored in a humid, poorly ventilated location. Let the meter reading—not the calendar—make the final decision.

Storage that helps wood dry

EPA’s practical approach is to split, stack, cover and store the wood correctly:

  • Split it: Smaller pieces expose more surface area and dry faster.
  • Stack it for airflow: Leave spaces between rows rather than packing the pile tightly.
  • Keep it off the ground: An elevated outdoor firewood rack limits ground moisture and improves air circulation underneath.
  • Cover only the top: A top-only cover sheds rain and snow while leaving the sides open. Wrapping the entire pile can trap moisture and slow drying.

Storage aids support seasoning; they do not prove that wood is ready to burn. Measure before bringing a large batch indoors or loading the appliance.

Can appearance or sound tell you wood is dry?

Cracked end grain, lower weight and a hollow or ringing sound when two pieces are struck are useful screening clues. Damp wood may sound dull, while dry pieces often feel noticeably lighter than fresh-cut ones.

These checks are subjective and can be misleading because the surface may be drier than the center. Species, piece size and the person performing the test also affect the result. Treat visual and sound tests as quick clues only; a meter reading from split wood is the better practical check.

Why firewood smokes instead of burning

Excess moisture is a common cause of smoke, but it is not the only one. Wet logs consume heat evaporating water, so the fire may never reach a temperature high enough for clean combustion. Typical signs include:

  • difficulty starting or maintaining the fire;
  • hissing or sizzling logs;
  • heavy visible smoke;
  • a fire that smolders instead of producing steady heat; and
  • rapidly dirtying stove glass.

If several logs measure 20% or less and the problem continues, check other factors: air controls and loading technique, fuel size, chimney draft, appliance condition and chimney blockage. Follow the appliance manual; a moisture reading alone cannot diagnose an installation or draft problem.

Choosing between common firewood checks

Approach What it tells you Main limitation
Split-log moisture-meter reading Numerical estimate of moisture in the burnable interior Readings vary with meter accuracy, temperature, species and sampling
Calendar seasoning period A planning guide; EPA suggests at least six months, with about twelve months often needed for hardwood Climate, split size, stacking and weather can make the same period produce different results
Cracked ends, light weight or ringing sound Quick indications that drying may be advanced Surface clues do not reliably reveal interior moisture
Pinless meter scan Fast, non-puncturing surface or near-surface screening Results depend on sensing depth, species and surface condition

Safe burning practices

Burn only clean, appropriate firewood. Do not burn household trash, plastics, painted or pressure-treated wood, plywood, particleboard or materials containing glue or harmful coatings.

  • Build hot fires instead of deliberately smoldering them.
  • Keep the appliance door closed except when loading or stoking.
  • Have the appliance and chimney inspected and maintained annually by a certified professional.
  • Use carbon-monoxide protection and follow local air-quality rules and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions.

The 20% target does not replace correct installation, adequate draft, chimney maintenance or safe operating practices.

A simple readiness checklist

  • Each test log was split before measuring.
  • The meter probes entered fresh interior wood.
  • Several locations and logs were tested.
  • Readings are consistently at or below 20%.
  • The pile was kept off the ground with airflow around the sides.
  • Only the top was covered during seasoning.
  • The wood is untreated and suitable for the appliance.

Bottom line: Aim for firewood at 20% moisture content or less, ideally within the 15%–20% range. Seasoning time and cracked ends can help you plan and screen a pile, but splitting a representative log and testing its fresh interior gives the most dependable answer.
