A green or cyan picture can come from a bad source, settings, neck-board component, CRT socket, purity problem, or a different color gun failing. If a tester confirms that the red gun has genuinely low emission, professional cleaning or rejuvenation may restore usable picture temporarily. An exhausted cathode, heater fault, or internal leakage usually means CRT or set replacement is the dependable answer.
What “nearly dead red gun” can mean
A color CRT has separate red, green, and blue electron guns. Each gun heats a cathode and emits electrons toward its matching phosphor. The phrase “dead red gun” is used loosely for several different faults:
- Low emission: the red cathode cannot produce enough beam current.
- Open or weak heater: the cathode does not reach its intended temperature.
- Grid-to-cathode leakage or a short: red may be abnormally bright, absent, unstable, or accompanied by retrace lines.
- Red-channel drive failure: the tube is healthy but the neck board or preceding RGB/chroma circuit is not supplying red correctly.
- Purity or convergence error: red exists but lands in the wrong place on the screen.
- White-balance error: red is present but cannot be matched to green and blue.
Therefore, a red or magenta cast is not proof that the red gun is failing. Missing green or blue can make an otherwise healthy red gun appear excessive.
Symptoms that point toward a weak red gun
- Whites and grays remain green or cyan even after ordinary color controls are reset, and red adjustment is already near its limit.
- Red is weak with every input and on the television’s own menu or test pattern.
- A full-screen red field is much dimmer than comparable green and blue fields.
- Red slowly appears after warm-up, improves briefly, and then fades.
- The red-only image is uniformly dim rather than merely misplaced in one corner.
- A CRT tester reports substantially lower red emission or much slower warm-up than for the other guns.
The B&K 470 service manual describes separate emission, tracking, and life tests. A gun that takes markedly longer to reach stabilized emission can indicate depleted cathode material or a heater-related problem and reduced remaining life: B&K 470 manual.

Safe checks before opening the cabinet
- Use the internal menu or test pattern. If red is weak there as well as from an external source, the source is less likely to be responsible.
- Try another source and cable. A console, RGB lead, decoder, or input board can lose one color.
- Reset picture controls. Record service-menu values before changing cutoff, bias, drive, gain, or color-temperature settings.
- Display red, green, blue, white, and gray fields. A uniformly dim red field suggests emission or drive. A colored patch or displaced red edge suggests purity or convergence.
- Observe warm-up. Note whether red never appears, arrives late, or drifts after the set becomes hot.
- Check whether the problem is global. A whole-screen deficiency differs from a corner or edge defect.
Degaussing is appropriate only for magnetic purity symptoms such as blotches after moving speakers, magnets, or the set itself. It cannot restore cathode emission. CRT construction and shadow-mask context are summarized by Wikipedia’s CRT reference.
Safety: Do not open a CRT merely to see whether the neck glows. The chassis can contain lethal high voltage and stored charge, hot components, and an implosion-risk vacuum envelope. Internal diagnosis belongs to a trained technician.
Three likely fault locations
Source or settings
If red disappears from only one input, suspect the source, cable, connector, decoder, or input circuitry. Incorrect service-menu cutoff or drive values can also produce a color cast. Raising red drive to an extreme value is not a repair; it can clip highlights, damage grayscale tracking, or stress the output stage.
Neck-board or video-drive circuit
When red is absent or intermittent but the tube is healthy, a technician should compare the red path with the equivalent green and blue paths. Checks normally include the jungle or RGB output, preamplifier, neck-board connector, red output transistor or amplifier, CRT socket pin, resistors, capacitors, connectors, and solder joints. Symmetrical comparison is more useful than applying a supposedly universal voltage value.

A fault that moves when equivalent red and green driver components are exchanged strongly implicates the external circuit. A burned resistor, corroded socket contact, cracked joint, or damaged harness can all mimic a bad gun.
CRT gun itself
If the red signal reaches the socket correctly but the red-only raster remains dim, the tube needs independent emission, shorts, leakage, tracking, and warm-up tests. A tester can establish that the gun is weak; it does not replace diagnosis of the circuitry feeding it.
How a professional confirms the diagnosis
- Establish the symptom: test multiple inputs, a known-good source, menus or test patterns, and primary-color fields.
- Check settings: restore ordinary controls and document service-menu cutoff, bias, drive, and gain values.
- Trace the signal: compare red, green, and blue at the RGB/chroma output, preamplifier, neck-board connector, output device, and socket pins.
- Inspect the hardware: look for poor soldering, open resistors, failed semiconductors, bad capacitors, connector damage, and socket contamination.
- Test the tube: use the correct CRT tester adapter and setup chart to measure each gun’s emission, cutoff or tracking, shorts, leakage, heater behavior, and warm-up response.
Tester readings are not universal. They depend on the instrument, adapter, tube type, calibration, and procedure; a “good” zone from one model must not be transferred to another.
Cleaning, balancing, and rejuvenation
CRT testers distinguish several operations. The B&K 467 documentation separates remove shorts, clean/balance, and rejuvenate: B&K 467 instructions.

Clean or balance first
A lower-energy cleaning or balancing cycle may remove contamination and improve tracking. It is the least aggressive restoration choice when the tester indicates a recoverable condition.
Rejuvenate only with informed consent
Higher-energy rejuvenation can temporarily increase emission by exposing remaining active cathode material. It does not add new cathode material. Sencore describes restoration as a subtractive process that removes buildup and exposes what remains: Sencore restoration guidance.
Have the technician record emission before treatment, use the lowest suitable procedure, then retest all three guns, tracking, and grayscale. Restoration of one gun can affect the readings of another, so the full set of guns must be checked afterward. A good picture immediately afterward does not prove factory-condition life; results range from no improvement to a useful but unpredictable extension.
Do not guess heater settings, current, adapter pinouts, or setup data. Those values are tester- and tube-specific. Heater-voltage boosting is a last-resort expedient that increases cathode stress, not a normal repair.

Faults rejuvenation cannot fix
- Heater-to-cathode leakage that causes the malfunction.
- An open heater or cathode.
- Severe internal arcing or other internal gun damage.
- Neck, vacuum, or structural damage.
- Any failed transistor, resistor, connector, socket, or chroma component outside the tube.
The B&K 467 instructions treat heater-to-cathode leakage as non-repairable by restoration and specify tube replacement when it causes the fault.

| Condition | Best next step | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Red missing on one source only | Diagnose source, cable, or input board | Least invasive; does not address a tube fault |
| Red drive absent at the neck board | Repair the red-channel circuitry | Usually cheaper than tube work |
| Red signal reaches the socket but red raster is dim | Obtain a CRT emission test | The tube may be worn |
| Red gun low but recoverable | Professional clean or balance | May help while using less aggressive energy |
| Red gun very low or slow to warm | Discuss cautious rejuvenation or replacement | Rejuvenation may fail or be short-lived |
| Heater-to-cathode leakage | Replace the CRT or complete set | No ordinary field repair |
| Color blotches in particular areas | Degauss and inspect purity | Does not restore emission |
| Rare PVM, BVM, arcade, or broadcast monitor | Pay for specialist diagnosis and consider restoration | Higher cost may be justified by rarity |
| Common consumer CRT | Find a compatible donor or replace the display | Often more economical than tube replacement |
A replacement tube is not automatically plug-and-play. Neck type, heater voltage, yoke, geometry, convergence, purity, focus, screen voltage, and chassis compatibility all require checking. A donor set with the same screen size may still be electrically or mechanically unsuitable.
Choosing equipment or a repair service
For one display, paying an arcade-monitor, CRT-television, broadcast-monitor, or retro-electronics specialist is usually more sensible than buying a tester. Ask whether the shop tests individual guns, diagnoses the neck board first, checks shorts and heater-cathode leakage, reports pre- and post-restoration readings, and explains what happens if the tube cannot be restored.
B&K Precision lists the 490B CRT Analyzer/Rejuvenator as discontinued, with a historical listed price of $1,510 and no direct replacement; that is not a current retail quote: B&K 490B product page. B&K’s current support and estimate pages concern its test equipment; they do not establish that the company repairs consumer CRT televisions or discontinued rejuvenators: support and service estimate.

Bottom line for your CRT
If a transistor, resistor, connector, socket, source, or setting is responsible, the repair may be routine. If comparative circuit tests pass and a CRT tester confirms low red emission, gentle professional restoration is a possible short-term rescue—not a guaranteed repair. A heater fault, internal leakage, arcing, or repeatedly failing emission points to CRT or complete-set replacement as the reliable long-term solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a red-tinted CRT picture proof that the red gun is failing?
No. Missing green or blue, incorrect white balance, an RGB source fault, or a purity problem can all create a red or magenta cast. Test each primary separately and check more than one input.
Can I fix a weak red gun by turning up screen or G2 voltage?
No. Increasing screen voltage can cause excessive brightness, retrace lines, poor cutoff, and accelerated wear. It does not restore cathode emission.
How long will a rejuvenated red gun last?
There is no dependable duration. Outcome depends on tube age, initial emission, whether contamination or cathode depletion caused the problem, restoration energy, and operating conditions. A strong immediate result can still fade.
