JVC SXXSW6000 5.1 Speaker System at $50 Shipped: What the 2006 Deal Actually Included

The famous JVC 5.1 deal was about $50 shipped in 2006—but it appears to have been speakers and a subwoofer only. Here is the receiver requirement, model confusion, compatibility advice and used-buying checklist.

Historical deal — December 10, 2006; no current availability verified. The listing behind “JVC 5.1 Home Theatre System w/ Subwoofer — $50 Shipped” appears to have been the JVC SXXSW6000, a five-speaker-and-subwoofer package sold for about $50 shipped. It was not a complete plug-and-play theater system: buyers needed a separate 5.1 AV receiver, speaker wire and source equipment.

What the original deal was

The closest match is an AnandTech deal thread posted December 10, 2006, identifying the product as the JVC SXXSW6000 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System at approximately $50 shipped. The archived discussion is at AnandTech. That price and availability are historical; they are not evidence of a current JVC offer.

Question What is established
Brand JVC
Likely model SXXSW6000, based on the matching 2006 thread
Deal price Approximately $50 shipped in December 2006
Product type 5.1 speaker package with a subwoofer
Receiver included? No; the discussion says a separate 5.1 receiver was required
Exact box contents Not fully documented by the matching source

The source does not provide an authoritative inventory of speaker wire, remote control, video equipment, DVD hardware or every included cable. Do not assume those items were in the box.

Why “home theatre system” was potentially misleading

In period retail language, “system” could mean a speaker set. In practical terms, the SXXSW6000 was not a complete theater-in-a-box with decoding, amplification and source playback. The forum discussion explicitly says that a 5.1 receiver was necessary and that the speakers could not simply connect to a sound card, television or game console. See the original discussion at AnandTech.

What a complete setup needed

  • A compatible 5.1-channel AV receiver to decode surround formats and power the passive speakers.
  • Speaker cable for the front, center and surround channels.
  • A source such as a DVD player, game console, computer or television.
  • Analog or digital interconnects appropriate to the source and receiver.
  • A suitable subwoofer connection. The exact SXXSW6000 subwoofer input arrangement is not established by the archived thread.

The basic signal path was:

TV, disc player, console or PC → 5.1 AV receiver → JVC front, center and surround speakers, plus the JVC subwoofer.

Do not confuse the SXXSW6000 with the SXXSW380

Several similar JVC promotions appeared in 2005 and 2006. The SXXSW380 is a different model. A related listing identifies an SPPWA380 powered subwoofer, SPXCA380 center speaker and four SPXSA380 satellites; another describes that package as having a 100-watt powered subwoofer. Those details belong to the SXXSW380, not automatically to the SXXSW6000. Sources: AnandTech SXXSW380 thread and HardForum SXXSW380 thread.

A later article also refers to the SXXSW6000 as a $50 surround system, but it is secondary coverage rather than a complete specification sheet: Engadget.

Receiver and connection requirements

Passive speakers require amplified speaker-level output. A computer’s headphone jack, a television’s line output or a console’s optical port cannot drive them directly. A PC with six-channel analog outputs could feed a receiver with matching multichannel inputs; an optical-equipped PC or console could feed an older receiver that decodes optical surround. In both cases, the receiver sits between the source and speakers.

Subwoofer uncertainty matters

Do not assume the subwoofer is a universal RCA/LFE model. Older JVC packages used different designs, including powered, speaker-level and proprietary connections. Inspect the actual rear panel for an AC inlet, RCA/LFE input, high-level terminals or a multi-pin connector before buying a receiver or cable. A “powered subwoofer” label alone does not guarantee compatibility with every receiver.

Using the speakers with a modern television

Compatibility depends on the receiver and the subwoofer, not just the speakers. A modern TV may feed an older receiver through optical output or an analog output if the television provides one. HDMI ARC/eARC is generally unavailable on vintage receivers without HDMI hardware, and an HDMI-only receiver may not solve a proprietary-subwoofer connection.

  • Signature Klipsch Sound: Tractrix Horn technology, LTS aluminum tweeters, and spun copper IMG woofers deliver high efficiency, low distortion, and dynamic audio.

This package does not by itself add Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Bluetooth, network streaming, 4K video switching or modern lossless-audio decoding. Those capabilities come from the receiver and source equipment. Verify the complete signal path before purchase.

Was $50 a good deal?

It was attractive as a low-cost speaker clearance, especially for someone who already owned a compatible receiver. It was not a $50 complete home-theater installation.

Evaluate the real cost as:

Total cost = speaker package + receiver + cables or adapters + shipping and tax + expected repair risk.

  • WHAT'S IN THE BOX: Acoustic Audio by Goldwood AA5400 powered subwoofer speaker, 5 passive wired satellite speakers, full function remote, 3.5 millimeter to RCA cable, 3 RCA to RCA jack cables, and an instruction manual

A receiver can cost more than the speakers, and vintage equipment adds uncertainty around failed drivers, hum, proprietary leads and unavailable replacement parts. Forum comments include both enthusiasm about the low price and criticism of sound quality; those are individual opinions, not controlled measurements. The AnandTech discussion records that mixed reaction at this thread, while similar subjective reactions appear in the SXXSW380 discussion at HardForum.

Used-buyer inspection checklist

Confirm the complete set

  • Four satellite speakers, one center speaker and the subwoofer are present.
  • Model labels match, or any mismatch is understood before purchase.
  • Proprietary connectors, harnesses, grilles and mounting hardware have not been omitted.

Check electrical condition

  • No frayed or crushed wires, split surrounds, damaged cones or rattling drivers.
  • The subwoofer powers on without smoke, severe hum or intermittent shutdown.
  • If a receiver is included, every channel produces output and the unit does not overheat.
  • Confirm the speaker impedance before pairing with a receiver; an unsuitable load can stress the amplifier.

Run a real 5.1 test

Use a known multichannel test signal and verify, individually, front left, front right, center, surround left, surround right and subwoofer/LFE. Stereo music alone can leave dead surround channels undiscovered. Ask for a return option when buying remotely.

Who should consider it now?

Reasonable fit

  • You already own a compatible 5.1 receiver.
  • You can inspect and test a complete set locally.
  • You need inexpensive surround speakers for a secondary room, garage or workshop.
  • You are comfortable identifying older connectors and sourcing ordinary speaker wire.

Poor fit

  • You want plug-and-play TV sound with HDMI ARC/eARC.
  • You expect Atmos, DTS:X, Bluetooth or wireless rear speakers.
  • You have no receiver and would need to buy one solely for this package.
  • You need predictable music performance, deep controlled bass, warranty coverage or easy replacement parts.

Modern alternatives

A current soundbar or all-in-one surround package is usually simpler for a television because it supplies current HDMI and streaming features. Official product destinations include Samsung, Roku, Sonos and Vizio.

JVC Mobile CS-DR521 drvn DR Series Shallow-Mount Coaxial Speakers (5.25", 260 Watts Max, 2 Way)
  • 2-way car speakers
  • 260W max
  • 40W RMS
  • 5.25" carbon mica woofers
  • 1" balanced dome polyetherimide (PEI) tweeters

If you specifically want separate speakers, pair a receiver from a current manufacturer such as Denon, Yamaha, Sony, Onkyo or Pioneer with a standard passive package from Polk Audio, Klipsch or JBL. These options cost more than the historical JVC clearance but avoid many connector and age-related uncertainties.

Final verdict

The $50 shipped offer was a genuine 2006 bargain for a tested JVC SXXSW6000 speaker package, not a complete receiver-based home theater. Treat any present-day listing as vintage used equipment: verify all five speakers and the subwoofer, identify the subwoofer connection, check impedance, test every channel and price the required receiver into the deal. If you need modern TV integration or have no compatible receiver, a current soundbar or a complete receiver-and-speaker bundle is the safer purchase.
