1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no single “gnat” treatment. First determine whether you have eye gnats, biting midges or other biting flies, fungus gnats from damp containers, or mosquitoes. Then remove manageable moisture sources, improve comfort where you sit, and use pesticides only for a confirmed pest and a label-approved site. Broad yard spraying is rarely a durable answer and can harm beneficial insects.
Identify the insect before treating it
“Gnat” is a loose common name. The location, behavior, and whether you are being bitten determine which advice applies.
| What you observe | Likely concern | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Small flies swarm around eyes, nose, mouth, ears, or wounds but do not bite intact skin | Eye gnats | They breed in moist, organic-rich soil and can be carried several miles by wind. UC IPM describes an average life cycle of about 28 days, varying with food, temperature, and moisture. UC IPM eye-gnat guidance |
| Insects leave bites | Biting midges or other biting flies | Do not assume eye-gnat controls will work. The University of Maryland Extension identifies personal repellent as the most practical option for biting gnats. University of Maryland Extension guidance |
| Flies hover around damp potting mix, houseplants, or containers | Fungus gnats | Focus on moisture management and treatments for larvae in container media, not a general outdoor spray. UC IPM fungus-gnat guidance |
| Adults repeatedly emerge from buckets, toys, gutters, or other retained water | Mosquitoes | Standing water is the breeding site; manage or empty it when possible. |
If you are unsure, photograph the insect or collect a specimen for your county extension office or local vector-control service before selecting a pesticide.
Find and correct outdoor breeding conditions
Inspect the property for places that stay wet or hold decomposing organic material. Eye gnats are associated with moist, well-drained sandy soil containing abundant organic matter; other small flies use damp substrates. Not every species requires a visible puddle, and insects may be arriving from another property.

- Remove unnecessary water from buckets, saucers, toys, tarps, and other containers.
- Clean clogged gutters and downspouts so water drains away from the house.
- Repair leaking hoses, outdoor faucets, irrigation lines, and low spots that remain saturated.
- Clear wet leaf litter and other organic debris where practical.
- Adjust irrigation and drainage so soil is not continuously wet when plants do not require it.
- For a pond or other water feature that must remain, follow the product label and local rules for any larvicide.
These steps target sources you control; they cannot guarantee relief when a breeding site is nearby or several miles away.
Make one porch or seating area usable now
Use moving air
A fan creates a practical local barrier for weak-flying eye gnats. The University of Maryland Extension specifically recommends a fan for porch nuisance. Aim airflow across the seating area, and use an outdoor-rated unit in a location protected from rain and moisture. This improves comfort in that space but does not reduce the wider population.

- Eliminate Flies — This reusable fly trap catches and kills hundreds of common fly species, including house flies, stable flies, bottle flies, flesh flies, horse flies, and many more.
- Fast Results — Instead of chemicals or sprays, this trap lures flies with food-based attractant. Once inside, flies drown in the water added to the trap.
- Reusable — Reduce plastic waste by reusing this trap season after season! Simply dump the contents when full, rinse, and replace the used attractant with a refill packet to reuse this trap again and again.
- Outdoor Use Only – Once activated, these traps have a strong odor. Only use this trap outdoors, and at least 20 feet away from any living areas.
- Made in the USA – At RESCUE!, our goal is to design and manufacture the safest and most effective pest control solutions available. We proudly manufacture our products in the USA!
Add screening
Repair porch screens and close gaps around doors. UC IPM summarizes research in which an 8-foot-high screen fence or barrier excluded more than 90% of eye gnats. That result is a research finding for eye gnats, not a guarantee for every gnat species or yard.
Wear a head net during a swarm
A fine head net over a hat is a direct physical measure when insects concentrate around the face. Emily of the University of Maryland Extension’s Home and Garden Information Center wrote on April 23, 2026: “Head nets over hats are the best to keep them away and eventually their season will pass.”

- SUPER STICKY. Our fly trap stick is made with extremely sticky glue that will trap virtually all bugs, making it a great gnat trap for house indoor and ideal fly traps outdoor hanging trap.
- NON-TOXIC. ODORLESS. BAIT FREE. Unlike many fly strips, our indoor fly trap contains no bait and is safe for all. Just make sure not to touch the sticky fly paper part of the fly sticky trap.
- INCLUDES DISH TO ADD YOUR OWN BAIT. Though they work great as fly traps indoor for home, adding bait will target specific flies. E.g. to the bottom dish add sugary bait to make a fruit fly trap.
- BOXES INCLUDED FOR DISCREET PLACEMENT. Each fly catcher indoor comes in its own open faced box, allow more discrete placement.
- HANG OR STAND. You can place your fly tape indoor for home on a flat surface, or use the hooks to set them up as fly strips indoor sticky hanging traps.
Use repellents only as personal, temporary protection
UC IPM lists DEET or picaridin as temporary relief options for people bothered by eye gnats. Apply only products whose labels allow the intended use, and follow directions for skin, clothing, age, and reapplication. Repellent protects the user; it does not treat soil, standing water, or a yard-wide population.
Understand what traps can and cannot do
Outdoor traps are not a dependable whole-yard solution. University of Maryland Extension cautions that benefits for eye gnats may be temporary and that traps can capture beneficial insects and predators. UC IPM describes an egg-baited eye-gnat trap for monitoring or limited relief; place it away from doors, windows, patios, and work areas. Treat a trap as a way to confirm activity or reduce insects at a carefully chosen point, not as eradication.

When pesticides or Bti are appropriate
Broad adult sprays
Do not begin with an aerial or blanket yard spray for an unidentified gnat problem. University of Maryland Extension says adult sprays can be short-lived and may harm pollinators and other non-target insects. UC IPM reports that chemical control of eye gnats has been relatively ineffective in agricultural settings and that insecticides are rarely warranted around homes. A targeted treatment of resting adults may temporarily reduce an exceptionally high, confirmed population, but it requires correct identification, a legal site, and strict label compliance.
Bti for retained water
Some Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) products are labeled for mosquito larvae in water a homeowner wants to retain. That is a specific water-use instruction, not a generic treatment for an outdoor gnat swarm.

Bti for fungus gnats in potting media
UC IPM discusses Bti products for fungus-gnat larvae in container media and notes that repeat applications may be needed. This use does not establish that Bti will control eye gnats flying across a lawn. Match the product label to the identified pest and exact site, and check local restrictions before applying anything.
A practical decision sequence
- Observe behavior: record whether insects bite, circle faces, hover over containers, or emerge from water.
- Inspect habitat: check damp soil, leaf litter, puddles, gutters, leaks, containers, and retained water.
- Correct controllable sources: drain unnecessary water, fix leaks, improve drainage, and avoid chronically wet media.
- Protect a specific area: use a fan, repaired screening, or a head net where people sit.
- Add temporary personal protection: use labeled DEET or picaridin when appropriate.
- Escalate carefully: for severe, persistent eye-gnat activity, contact local vector control or an extension specialist before considering treatment.
What to expect—and what not to promise
Source reduction can take time because adults may continue arriving from elsewhere. Fans, nets, and screening provide immediate, localized relief without claiming to eliminate the population. Traps may monitor or modestly reduce activity but are not selective. No reviewed source establishes a universal consumer product or a guaranteed percentage reduction for whole-yard treatments. The safest approach is to identify the insect, target its actual habitat when possible, and reserve chemicals for a defined, label-approved use.
