A durable brick fire pit separates the visible outer masonry from the material exposed to flame: landscape blocks or ordinary brick may need a metal liner or fire-rated brick to protect them from heat. Choose a stable, level base and a drainage approach suited to the site and selected fire-pit system, then check local fire rules before building or lighting it.

There is no single design or set of dimensions that works for every yard. Compare designs by their fire-facing material, liner fit and replacement access, outer masonry, foundation and drainage needs, maintenance access, and local requirements.

What Makes a Brick Fire Pit Last?

“Brick” is not one interchangeable material category. Belgard warns that excessive heat can crack or damage its concrete landscape blocks and recommends a metal liner or fire-rated brick for protection. Treat this as manufacturer guidance for landscape products, not a lifetime guarantee or a rule for every product.

Code provisions cited for masonry fireplace fireboxes specify firebrick and refractory mortar, but they address fireplaces. They should not be treated as a universal specification for freestanding outdoor fire pits. Check the selected product’s instructions and applicable local requirements.

  • Safe Top Ring: Our spark screen cover is designed with a metal ring that makes it easy for you to move. Unlike large diameter handles, it is safer to move and won't harm yourself due to sliding. It is convenient for you to increase firewood at any time and keep the fire pit continuously burning
  • Simple installation: Our fire pit lid does not require complicated steps. Through the screw connection, the operation is very simple. It can be divided into 4 pieces, which can easily store it and occupy a small space. You can easily carry it, which is very suitable for travel adventure. It can effectively reduce the splash of sparks, embers and debris

Build on stable, level support. Belgard advises preparing a level area and compacted aggregate base for its system; Techo-Bloc provides separate instructions for its Valencia fire pit, including a drain hole when installed on an existing paver or concrete surface. These are product-specific details, not universal base or drainage plans. Soil, climate, frost conditions, and the fire-pit system affect what is appropriate.

Compare Brick Fire Pit Designs

Design Fire-facing material Key considerations
All-brick appearance Use a fire-rated lining where required by the design and product instructions; do not assume ordinary outer brick is suitable at the hot face. Check heat exposure, compatibility, and whether the lining can be maintained or replaced.
Masonry outer ring with firebrick lining Firebrick at the burn chamber, following the chosen system and applicable requirements. Confirm the materials and mortar are suitable for the intended use; fireplace code provisions are not automatically outdoor-pit specifications.
Masonry ring with metal insert A metal liner selected to fit the pit and intended fuel. Check fit, installation instructions, replacement access, and the outer masonry’s exposure to residual heat.

For any design, plan for a stable base, site-appropriate drainage, maintenance access for ash and components, and the local rules that apply to construction and use.

Idea 1: Classic Round Fire Pit

A round brick fire pit offers a familiar look and can work with movable seating. For durability, consider a masonry outer ring with a suitable firebrick lining or a metal insert rather than assuming the visible landscape blocks should also face the flame. Confirm that the liner fits the ring and can be inspected or replaced.

Planning and construction checks

  1. Choose the intended fuel and a fire-pit system designed for that use.
  2. Prepare stable, level support according to the selected system and actual site conditions; do not rely on a universal base thickness.
  3. Install the fire-facing material and any mortar as specified for the system.
  4. Plan a way to remove ash and maintain or replace the liner.
  5. Check local fire rules, clearances, and restrictions before use.

Idea 2: Rectangular Pit With a Masonry Core

A square or rectangular masonry pit can suit a more architectural setting. Separate the structural or decorative outer masonry from the fire-facing surface, and verify that the selected lining and surrounding materials are compatible with the intended use.

It can be divided into 4 pieces, which can easily store it and occupy a small space. You can easily carry it, which is very suitable for travel adventure. It can effectively reduce the splash of sparks, embers and debris

Planning and construction checks

  1. Confirm the selected system’s base and installation requirements for the site.
  2. Plan the inner lining, its fit, and how it will be serviced or replaced.
  3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the chosen fire pit and materials.
  4. Check drainage, local requirements, and the clearances that apply to your location.

Idea 3: Sunken Fire Pit

A below-grade fire area needs careful site-specific water planning. The available research does not establish one drainage design for all sites, so assess runoff, soil, and local conditions before choosing a system.

Planning and construction checks

  1. Identify where surface water and other site runoff will go.
  2. Have the base and drainage approach selected for the actual soil, climate, and fire-pit system.
  3. Confirm the fire-facing material and installation method for the chosen pit.
  4. Check local rules and safe clearances before construction and use.

Idea 4: Gas Fire Pit With a Masonry Exterior

A gas fire pit combines masonry with fuel-system components. Belgard notes that fire pits require properly designed air vents for operation and safety, with particular emphasis on gas pits. Do not copy a vent layout from another enclosure: follow the chosen unit’s instructions and have the gas installation assessed under local requirements.

Planning and construction checks

  1. Select a gas unit intended for the planned enclosure and installation.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for ventilation, installation, and service access.
  3. Keep components accessible as the installation instructions require.
  4. Confirm applicable permits and requirements with local authorities and qualified trades before work begins.

Idea 5: Fire Pit Integrated With a Patio

Integrating a fire pit with a patio gives you a chance to plan the setting, circulation, and drainage together. Use the installation instructions for the specific unit and hardscape system; the Techo-Bloc Valencia manual, for example, gives a system-specific drain-hole detail for placement on an existing paver or concrete surface.

Planning and construction checks

  1. Lay out the pit, seating, and paths so people can move safely around the area.
  2. Prepare a stable base and drainage detail suited to the selected products and site.
  3. Allow for maintenance access to the liner or other fire-pit components.
  4. Check local fire restrictions and applicable construction requirements.

How to Choose a Liner and Outer Masonry

Compare options by whether the fire-facing material is suitable for the intended heat and fuel; whether the liner fits and can be replaced; how much residual heat reaches the outer masonry; what foundation and drainage the site requires; and how the pit will be maintained. Belgard’s guidance supports using a metal liner or fire-rated brick to protect its landscape blocks from excessive heat. Fireplace code material requirements offer context but do not by themselves establish requirements for outdoor pits.

Fire Safety and Local Rules

Rules depend on jurisdiction, conditions, and the kind of installation. The 2025 Oregon Fire Code has recreational-fire provisions on separation from structures or combustible material, attendance, and extinguishing equipment, but those provisions are Oregon-specific and include exceptions. Check the current rules with the relevant local fire authority rather than treating a distance from one jurisdiction as universal.

Victoria’s Country Fire Authority advises checking fire restrictions, using a stable surface that will not burn, keeping combustibles clear around and above the fire, and avoiding accelerants. That is Australian authority guidance, not a US code requirement.

  1. Check current local restrictions and fire-authority guidance before building or lighting the pit.
  2. Confirm applicable permits and installation requirements for the chosen construction and fuel type.
  3. Follow the selected product’s instructions for installation, ventilation, and operation.
  4. Keep the area clear and have appropriate extinguishing equipment available as required by local rules and product instructions.

Common Brick Fire Pit Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming landscape blocks or ordinary brick can withstand direct, repeated flame exposure without protection. Belgard recommends a metal liner or fire-rated brick for its landscape products.
  • Applying fireplace firebox provisions as if they were universal requirements for freestanding outdoor pits.
  • Using one base thickness or drainage detail as a universal plan. Follow the chosen system and account for the site.
  • Copying gas enclosure venting details for a different fire-pit system or fuel type.
  • Making the liner or other serviceable components inaccessible.
  • Ignoring local fire restrictions, required clearances, or construction requirements.

Bottom Line

A durable brick fire pit starts with the right distinction: the outer masonry and the fire-facing surface may need different materials. Choose a suitable liner, follow the installation instructions for the selected system, plan a stable site-appropriate base and drainage, and verify local rules before building or use.
