To choose a dishwasher, measure the available space and door clearance first, then select a configuration and capacity that suit your kitchen and household. Compare similar models using their EnergyGuide labels and ENERGY STAR status, and check current specifications, installation requirements, warranty, and local service before deciding.

There is no single best model established by this research. A dishwasher is both an appliance and a cabinet, plumbing, and electrical installation, so fit and installation readiness matter alongside features.

Start With the Type of Dishwasher That Fits the Kitchen

Choose a configuration the kitchen can accommodate before comparing brands or feature lists. Confirm the installation document for the exact model: listed fit dimensions may describe the intended space rather than the appliance’s exact dimensions.

Built-In Dishwashers

Built-in models install under a counter and connect to the home’s plumbing. Measure the opening and check the product’s installation instructions rather than assuming every model fits a standard opening. Also account for the door swinging fully open and for delivery access.

#1 Best Overall
Midea 18 Inch Built-in Dishwasher, 8 Place Settings, Stainless Steel Tub
  • Slimline Design with Large Capacity : The Midea built-in dishwasher boasts a slim body that takes up minimal space and is easy to fit. It features a digital control panel with an LED display and has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate larger plates, pots, and pans up to 11 inches in height.
  • 8 Place Settings Dishwasher : With dimensions of 22.6D x 17.6W x 32.4H with adjustable legs, this under sink dishwasher provides a spacious and flexible interior for maximum dishware loading.
  • 6 programs+3 functions : The 18-inch dishwasher offers six programs, including Heavy, Normal, ECO, Delicate, Quick, and Rinse washing programs. It also features Heated Dry, Hi-Temp, and Sanitize functions that meet all your daily needs. Note: ONLY use detergent specially for dishwasher because regular liquid dish soap will cause dishwasher problems.
  • Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
  • HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.

Compact Dishwashers

A compact dishwasher may suit a smaller kitchen or household, but “compact” does not specify a particular cabinet fit. Check both its physical dimensions and capacity. ENERGY STAR defines compact capacity as below the standard threshold of eight place settings plus six serving pieces.

Portable Dishwashers

Portable models connect to a sink when in use and can suit kitchens without a dedicated dishwasher space. Check the manufacturer’s connection instructions, the space needed to use and store the unit, and whether its capacity suits your household.

Drawer and Panel-Ready Models

Drawer and panel-ready models can be appropriate when their configuration suits the kitchen plan. Confirm the exact appliance and installation documents with the cabinetmaker or installer before ordering cabinetry. Check panel requirements, clearances, connections, and service arrangements rather than relying on category descriptions alone.

Compare Configurations and Capacity

Option May suit Check before buying
Built-in A kitchen with a dedicated under-counter space and hookups Opening dimensions, door clearance, connections, and installation instructions
Compact A kitchen or household with smaller space or capacity needs Exact footprint and capacity; compact means below the standard capacity threshold
Portable A kitchen without a dedicated installation space Sink connection, use and storage space, and capacity
Drawer or panel-ready A kitchen plan designed around that configuration Exact model, cabinet and panel requirements, clearances, and service

ENERGY STAR’s standard capacity category is at least eight place settings plus six serving pieces. Treat that as a test category, not a guarantee that a machine suits your dishes. Consider the household’s actual dishware, cookware, loading habits, and how often you want to run a cycle.

How Do I Compare Dishwasher Energy Use?

Use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare estimated energy use and yearly operating cost among similar models. The Federal Trade Commission says these estimates use typical conditions and a national average energy price; actual cost varies with local rates and personal use. ENERGY STAR qualification is a useful efficiency threshold, not a promise of a particular household bill.

ENERGY STAR’s current dishwasher criteria took effect July 19, 2023. Standard models must use no more than 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle to qualify; compact models must use no more than 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle. Confirm the model’s current certification and compare its EnergyGuide label with similar options.

ENERGY STAR estimates that a standard-size certified dishwasher costs about $50 per year to run and can save about 5,800 gallons of water over its lifetime. These are program estimates, not guarantees for an individual home.

What Else Should I Look for When Buying a Dishwasher?

Prioritize features according to how your household washes dishes. ENERGY STAR advises considering auto-sensing and available wash-cycle options. Also compare rack adjustability, room for cookware, drying method, noise rating, cycle duration, warranty, and service options using current model specifications and reliable independent testing. This research does not establish universal winners on those features.

Kenmore 24" Built-In Dishwasher - White
  • 3 Stage Ultra Wash Filter: The 3-stage UltraWash Filter captures particles as small as a grain of fine sand and drains them away, so they can’t redeposit on dishes - for a sparkling clean every time. The filter removes easily for monthly cleaning
  • SmartWash Adjusts to the Mess: Sensor technology detects soil levels and automatically adjusts the water temperature, pressure, and cycle time. Leak detection prevents damage before it starts
  • SmartDry Technology: SmartDry drying selects the best drying cycle and adjusts for optimized drying performance. Hot water forces condensation onto the stainless tub, and down the drain
  • Roomy Interior & Adjustable, Removable Rack: Fit up to 14 place settings or just a few items using the Half Load option. The MoreSpace Adjustable Upper Rack raises, lowers, or removes entirely to make room for pots, tall items, or delicate stemware
  • Sani Rinse Option: This ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher has a UL-certified Sani Rinse option for seriously clean dishes

Before choosing a model, check that the rack layout suits the dishes you use and that the controls and cycles meet your needs. Do not assume a feature is valuable simply because it appears on a product list.

Account for Installation and Total Cost

Appliance price is only one part of the purchase. Before checkout, confirm delivery access, existing hookups, electrical requirements, installation cost, old-unit removal, required parts, warranty terms, and any locally available rebate. ENERGY STAR directs consumers to its Rebate Finder; offers and eligibility vary by location.

For a replacement, inspect the opening and existing water, drain, and electrical connections. A first-time installation or relocation may require additional cabinet, plumbing, electrical, or flooring work. Get a site-specific estimate rather than relying on a general price range.

Measure Before You Shop

Measure the cabinet opening and check the door’s full swing and clearance. The Federal Trade Commission advises measuring the space and checking that the appliance can open fully and has suitable clearance. Use the installation document for the exact model to confirm fit.

Check the delivery path as well as the final location. If flooring, cabinets, counters, or nearby appliances could obstruct installation or the open door, resolve those constraints before ordering. For a remodel, share the dishwasher’s installation document with the cabinetmaker and relevant installers before finalizing the design.

Installation Details to Confirm

Dishwashers connect to plumbing and electricity and must fit securely in the cabinet space. Confirm the manufacturer’s installation requirements and local code before work begins.

Water and Drain

Verify that the water supply and drain arrangement are suitable for the selected appliance. Ask the installer to check the shutoff, connections, and drain routing, and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements.

Electrical

Check the model’s electrical requirements and the existing connection before installation. Requirements and code provisions depend on the appliance and location. Have a qualified professional assess uncertain or outdated wiring.

Mounting and Leak Checks

Follow the appliance’s instructions for leveling and mounting, including any countertop or cabinet requirements. After installation, have the connections checked for leaks and confirm that the appliance drains and operates as described in its manual.

When to Hire a Pro

Professional installation is a sensible choice when the project involves new plumbing or electrical work, cabinet changes, uncertain clearances, or a configuration with specific panel or mounting requirements. Confirm in advance who will handle delivery, installation, required parts, removal of the old appliance, and startup checks.

Practical Buying Checklist

  1. Measure the opening and check the full door swing, clearance, and delivery path.
  2. Choose built-in, compact, portable, or another configuration that the kitchen can support.
  3. Match capacity to your real dishes, cookware, and loading habits.
  4. Compare EnergyGuide estimates among similar models and check current ENERGY STAR certification.
  5. Compare current specifications for cycles, sensing, racks, drying, noise, and cycle duration.
  6. Confirm hookups, installation requirements, warranty, local service, delivery, removal, and total cost.
  7. Check whether a local rebate is available and whether you qualify.
